Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus multimaculatus was described in 2016 by Birindelli, Teixeira and Britski, part of a wave of taxonomic work that has clarified the boundaries between the many superficially similar striped and spotted Leporinus species across the Amazon and adjacent Brazilian shield rivers. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose common name describes the distinctive oblique, snout-down feeding posture shared by Leporinus, Anostomus and their relatives.
The genus Leporinus is large and taxonomically active, with species distinguished on fine details of striping pattern, scale counts and dentition, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the authority for which names are currently valid. As a relatively recently described, geographically restricted species, L. multimaculatus has not accumulated the layers of historical synonymy seen in older, more widespread Leporinus, and its taxonomic placement within the genus is not disputed in the sources reviewed here.
Morphology
Leporinus multimaculatus is a small headstander, with FishBase recording a maximum published size of 4.5 in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus that includes considerably larger species. Like other Leporinus it has an elongated, moderately compressed body, a blunt snout with a small terminal mouth adapted for grazing, and the characteristic multiple dark blotches or spots along the flank that give the species its epithet "multimaculatus" (many-spotted).
Data on this particular species' fin structure and finer morphological detail is sparse in the sources available; in general, Leporinus species carry a single dorsal fin set well back on the body and a forked caudal fin, body proportions suited to the head-down grazing posture the family is named for.

In the aquarium this diet translates directly: a vegetable-forward menu of blanched vegetables, algae wafers, spirulina-based foods and quality flake or pellet, offered regularly, mirrors the wild diet far better than a protein-heavy regime. As with other Leporinus, unrestricted access to soft-leaved live plants will likely see them grazed or shredded.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Leporinus multimaculatus was found in the sources reviewed. At a maximum of around 4.5 in SL, Leporinus multimaculatus is a manageable size for a dedicated species or community tank, but its temperament needs the same respect given to its larger, more notorious relatives. Leporinus headstanders are constant algae grazers that spend much of their time working surfaces at their trademark head-down angle, and despite their small size they are known fin-nippers — practical fishkeeping accounts of the genus specifically warn against housing them with long-finned tankmates such as bettas or angelfish. Keeping them in a proper group, or alternatively singly, is recommended to spread or reduce aggression rather than housing two or three, which tends to concentrate bullying on the weakest fish.
A planted tank should use robust, coarse-leaved or epiphyte-mounted plants (Anubias, Java fern) rather than soft, delicate species, since this fish will graze soft vegetation along with algae and biofilm. Strong water movement, driftwood and rockwork for grazing surfaces, and a varied vegetable-forward diet round out a suitable setup. Given its small size and grazing habit, it is a far less demanding aquarium subject than the large-growing pacus or predatory serrasalmids that share this atlas section, but the fin-nipping risk means tankmate choice deserves real thought.
