Leporinus bimaculatus is a lesser-known headstander from central Brazil's Araguaia and Tocantins river systems, described by the French naturalist Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1855 from specimens taken in the Rio Vermelho, a tributary of the Araguaia. Like other members of its genus it spends much of its time grazing algae and biofilm off wood and rock in a distinctive oblique, head-down posture, and it shares the family reputation for becoming territorial and nippy as it matures. Data on this particular species is sparse — no confirmed maximum size or IUCN assessment exists in the literature currently available — so this account leans on documented genus-level biology and the little that has been published specifically about L. bimaculatus, rather than guessing at the gaps.

Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus bimaculatus was described by Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1855, part of a wave of characin descriptions produced from Castelnau's own Brazilian collecting expeditions of the early 1840s. The type locality is the Rio Vermelho, a tributary of the Rio Araguaia in Goiás, Brazil, with a paralectotype recorded from the Rio Tocantins at São João das Duas Barras, Tocantins — placing the species squarely within the Araguaia-Tocantins river system of central Brazil.

The species belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the large genus Leporinus, whose more than 90 valid species are distinguished by their elongated, torpedo-shaped bodies and the oblique, head-down grazing posture that gives the family its common name. As with many Leporinus, identification within the genus rests on fine details of banding pattern, body depth and dentition, and species-level data for L. bimaculatus specifically remains thin in the accessible literature compared with better-studied congeners such as L. maculatus or L. fasciatus.

Morphology

Leporinus bimaculatus shares the classic headstander body plan: an elongated, moderately compressed torpedo shape with a pointed snout, a small terminal-to-slightly-inferior mouth suited to grazing surfaces, and a forked tail. As the specific epithet "bimaculatus" (two-spotted) suggests, the species is marked by a pattern of dark blotches or bands along the flanks, consistent with the bold black-on-silver or black-on-gold banding typical of many Leporinus species, though a fully confirmed description of the adult colour pattern is not available from current sources.

Confirmed maximum size data for L. bimaculatus could not be sourced; data is sparse. As a general guide, Leporinus species range widely by species from modest 4–6 in forms up to large 12 in+ river fish, and prospective keepers should size a tank for the larger end of that range until firm data on this species is available rather than assume it stays small.

Habitat

Leporinus bimaculatus is known from the Araguaia and Tocantins river basins of central Brazil, a large, seasonally flooding system draining the Brazilian Shield toward the lower Amazon. Like other river-dwelling Leporinus, it likely inhabits flowing channels, rocky and submerged-wood habitat and margins where algae and biofilm accumulate on hard surfaces, tracking the strong wet–dry seasonal cycle typical of central Brazilian rivers.

Specific water chemistry and temperature data for this species were not found in the cache; data is sparse. Central Brazilian river systems in this region are generally warm, tropical waters, and keepers should follow the moderate, soft-to-neutral conditions typical of Leporinus as a genus until species-specific figures are confirmed.

Feeding

Leporinus as a genus are omnivorous grazers that feed head-down, an oblique posture that lets them rasp algae and biofilm (aufwuchs) from wood, rock and other submerged surfaces. In the wild this diet is supplemented with crustaceans, insects, worms and plant matter, and many species feed opportunistically at night along the bottom.

In the aquarium, Leporinus need a varied diet weighted toward vegetable matter: quality pellets and flakes, blanched vegetables such as spinach, zucchini and boiled peas, alongside occasional bloodworm or brine shrimp for protein. Because they will also graze live plants in a planted tank, keepers should expect soft-leaved aquarium plants to be sampled or shredded over time.

Mating

No species-specific courtship description for Leporinus bimaculatus was found in the cache; data is sparse. Across the genus, spawning behaviour is poorly documented in the hobby literature, and external sexual dimorphism is not reliably established for most Leporinus, including this species.

Breeding

Leporinus bimaculatus has not been documented as bred in the home aquarium. Headstanders as a group are egg-scatterers with no parental care, and captive breeding is rare across the genus — a small number of Leporinus and the related Anostomus have been reported spawning in aquaria, and some Leporinus are farmed commercially, but L. bimaculatus specifically is not known to have been bred by hobbyists. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species and should treat any captive stock as wild-collected or farmed rather than tank-raised.

In the aquarium

Leporinus become increasingly territorial and aggressive as they mature, and the genus has a well-earned reputation as fin-nippers — long-finned or slow-moving tankmates such as bettas and angelfish are poor companions. A tank should be sized generously to account for both this territoriality and the genus's tendency toward larger adult sizes, with robust filtration for a fish that grazes and browses constantly.

Because Leporinus graze live plants as readily as algae, a planted tank should use tough, unpalatable species or accept some browsing damage. Diet should be varied and vegetable-forward, per Feeding above, and tankmates should be chosen for size and speed rather than delicacy — robust characins, larger catfish and other headstanders are safer choices than anything with trailing fins.

Conservation

Leporinus bimaculatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (Not Evaluated), and no dedicated conservation literature on the species was located in the cache. It is known only from the Araguaia-Tocantins basin of central Brazil, a system under long-term pressure from damming, agricultural runoff and habitat modification, but without a formal assessment or population data, its conservation status cannot be characterized beyond Not Evaluated. Data is sparse; further field or taxonomic work would be needed to establish trend or threat status.
