At a maximum of 1 in standard length, Otocinclus tapirape holds the record as the smallest species in an already diminutive genus — a fish so compact it makes a standard dwarf otocinclus look bulky by comparison. Restricted to the upper and middle Araguaia River in central Brazil, this micro-algae-scraper occupies slow, well-vegetated bank habitats and is distinguished from close relatives by a suite of subtle but consistent skeletal and pigmentation characters worked out in its 2002 description.

Taxonomy & naming

Otocinclus tapirape was described by Mário de Pinna Britto and Cláudio Ruy Vasconcelos de Moreira in 2002 in Copeia (volume 2002, number 4, pages 1063–1069), from specimens collected at Córrego Água Parada, a tributary of Rio Pintado approximately 7 mi west of Novo Planalto, within the Rio Araguaia system, Goiás State, Brazil (type locality coordinates: 13.17°S, 49.62°W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Otocinclus tapirape Britto & Moreira, 2002, with no junior synonyms.

The species was placed in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, the 'dwarf otocinclus' lineage of Loricariidae. Armbruster (2004) and subsequent molecular phylogenies confirm Otocinclus as a derived lineage within the hypoptopomatine clade. The genus currently comprises over 20 valid species, with O. tapirape distinguished from all congeners except O. vestitus, O. flexilis, and O. affinis by having canal-bearing plates of the trunk median plate series restricted to the anterior field only (absent from the posterior field). From those three similar species it is further set apart by the presence of an iris diverticulum, the absence of paired W-shaped marks on the caudal fin, the presence of a large subnasal lamina on the lateral ethmoid, a lower total lateral-plate count (20–22 vs. 24 or more), a narrower nuchal plate, and a non-tandem-repeat arrangement of median series plates.

Morphology

Otocinclus tapirape is the smallest known Otocinclus, reaching a maximum standard length of 1 in. Total length in healthy adults is typically around 1 in. The body is elongated with the characteristic loricariid lateral plate armour; the dorsal profile is gently arched and the ventral surface is flattened, with the suctorial mouth positioned ventrally for grazing hard surfaces. Coloration follows the typical Otocinclus pattern: a prominent dark midlateral stripe running from the snout tip through the eye and along the flank to the caudal peduncle, contrasting with a pale cream to white ground colour on the flank above and below the stripe. The caudal fin lacks the paired W-shaped marks found in O. vestitus, a useful character for field identification.

The iris diverticulum — a small iris appendage visible in living or freshly fixed material — is present in O. tapirape; this feature is absent in O. vestitus (its most similar congener) and is one of the original diagnostic characters of the species. Fin formula: dorsal II,7; anal 0,6. Lateral plate count 20–22 (lower than in O. flexilis and O. affinis).

Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Females grow slightly larger than males and are noticeably broader across the abdomen when gravid, a feature most clearly seen from above. No secondary sexual characters such as odontodes or genital papilla enlargement comparable to Corydoras or larger loricariids are known.

Habitat

Otocinclus tapirape is endemic to the upper and middle Araguaia River, in the states of Goiás and Tocantins in central Brazil. The Araguaia is one of Brazil's great central-plateau rivers, flowing northward through the Cerrado savanna and transitional forest zones before joining the Tocantins. In the upper and middle reaches where O. tapirape occurs, the water is generally clear and warm, with sandy to fine-gravel substrate and abundant aquatic and marginal vegetation along the banks.

The original collection site — Córrego Água Parada, a small tributary — is a slow to moderately flowing creek near its banks; FishBase notes the species inhabits well-oxygenated, slow to moderate-flowing waters, often near river banks. Aquatic grasses, submerged macrophytes, and submerged root tangles from riparian vegetation provide the fine, biofilm-covered surfaces on which Otocinclus graze. The Cerrado region is subject to pronounced wet and dry seasons, and water levels, temperatures, and turbidity vary substantially between seasons.

The genus Otocinclus is noted as being facultatively air-breathing, a trait that offers resilience during low-oxygen conditions that can develop in dense aquatic vegetation or during the dry season when flows decrease.

Feeding

Otocinclus tapirape, like all members of its genus, is a specialist algae and periphyton grazer. The small bicuspid teeth and the powerful ventral suctorial mouth are adapted to rasping thin films of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and associated microbial detritus from smooth surfaces — primarily submerged plant stems and leaves, fine-grained rocks, and submersed woody debris. There is no evidence that this species is capable of processing tough wood grain or hard algae crusts in the manner of larger Hypostominae.

In the aquarium, maintaining a healthy growth of soft algae on plant leaves and tank glass is the most important dietary component. Soft algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini slices, cucumber, spinach), and fine spirulina powder or tablets are all accepted. The species is not a robust feeder and can decline rapidly if algae run out and supplementary feeding is not provided; unlike larger plecos it cannot subsist on incidental detritus. Because of its tiny size, food items should be very fine or soft enough to rasp from a surface — whole wafers designed for large plecos are too hard for a 1 in fish to process efficiently.

Mating

The specific mating behaviour of Otocinclus tapirape has not been published in the scientific literature, and the species has no captive breeding reports on PlanetCatfish as of 2026. Information is inferred from the well-documented breeding biology of more commonly kept congeners (O. vittatus, O. affinis, O. vestitus, O. cocama), which show a broadly consistent pattern across the genus.

Males in breeding condition actively pursue females around the tank. Pre-spawning involves the male closely following the female, nudging her flanks and urogenital area. When a female is receptive, the male positions alongside her in a T-formation — the classic loricariid embrace — stimulating egg release. Spawning can take place against plant leaves, the tank glass, or other smooth surfaces, and spawning episodes typically involve multiple short pairings spread over several hours. Gravid females are visibly swollen in the abdomen and noticeably broader when viewed from above.

Conditioning requires pristine water quality, a diet rich in algae, and ideally live food supplements. Small regular water changes mimicking seasonal precipitation shifts appear to stimulate spawning.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Otocinclus tapirape has been documented in the available literature or on PlanetCatfish as of 2026. What follows is therefore inferred from the well-reported biology of closely related Otocinclus species, all of which are egg-scatterers that deposit individual or small clusters of adhesive eggs on plant leaves, tank glass, and other smooth surfaces — in contrast to the cave-spawning strategy of larger plecos.

In congeners, eggs are small, slightly adhesive, and deposited singly or in small groups following each T-embrace. Clutch size per spawning event in most Otocinclus is low — typically 20–60 eggs total — though several spawning events can occur on the same day. The eggs receive no parental care after deposition; adults should ideally be removed or the eggs moved to a separate rearing vessel to prevent predation. Incubation at typical aquarium temperatures takes approximately 2–3 days; fry are tiny and require infusoria or commercial fry food before graduating to biofilm and micro-algae. Water quality during the first few weeks is critical, as the fry are extremely sensitive to ammonia and nitrite.

Given the species' micro-size (1 in), a dedicated species-only breeding tank of 10 US gal with dense fine-leaved plants, excellent water quality, and a rich algal food base would be the recommended setup for any serious breeding attempt.

In the aquarium

Otocinclus tapirape is an extreme micro-fish even by the standards of a genus already celebrated for its small size. At under 1 in total length, it is suitable only for nano and micro-aquaria and carefully managed community tanks with very small, peaceful tankmates. A group of six to ten individuals is appropriate in a planted nano tank of 10–15 US gal; more would be welcome in larger planted setups, as O. tapirape is a social species that does better in groups.

Water quality must be excellent and stable: this species does not tolerate ammonia or nitrite, and even transient elevations can cause rapid decline. Temperature 72–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, low to moderate hardness. Well-planted tanks with abundant algae growth are ideal; the fish will continuously graze plant leaves, glass panels, and fine-grained substrates throughout the day.

The critical challenge with O. tapirape — as with most Otocinclus — is maintaining adequate food supply. Wild-caught individuals often arrive having been starved during transit and can be reluctant to accept prepared foods. Establishing a colony on a well-algaed, mature planted tank is the safest approach. Suitable micro-fish tankmates include small tetra species (Ember Tetras, Green Neon Tetras), small Corydoras species, Boraras, and other nano fish. Avoid housing with any fish that might be tempted to nip fins or swallow a 1 in fish whole. This species has almost no presence in the trade and is unlikely to be encountered in shops; it is a species for collectors and dedicated small-fish enthusiasts.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus tapirape as Least Concern in 2018. The species is restricted to the upper and middle Araguaia River — a drainage that, while not immediately threatened across its full length, faces significant pressures from agricultural intensification (soy and cattle farming) in the Cerrado biome. The Cerrado is one of the world's most biodiverse and most deforested savannas, and riparian vegetation along Araguaia tributaries is under continuous pressure from agricultural clearance, which increases siltation, raises water temperatures, and removes the shaded marginal habitat that Otocinclus depend on.

The species is not known to be commercially collected for the ornamental trade in significant numbers; its tiny size and relative obscurity offer some protection from trade pressure. Captive breeding has not been established. Given the narrow endemic range and the ongoing deterioration of Cerrado riparian habitats, the Least Concern status may warrant re-evaluation as land-use change in the Araguaia watershed continues.
