Described from deep, fast-flowing channels of the blackwater rio Negro system, Loricaria lundbergi is an unusually depth-tolerant whiptail catfish found at 8–19 metres — a habitat stratum rarely attributed to members of its genus. Named in honour of the influential Neotropical ichthyologist John G. Lundberg, it is known from widely separated localities across the rio Negro drainage of Brazil and Venezuela, linked by the shared extreme blackwater conditions of that basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Loricaria lundbergi was formally described by Manoela R. Thomas and Lúcia Helena Rapp Py-Daniel in 2008, in a paper presenting three new species of the genus Loricaria from river channels of the Amazon basin, published in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 6, number 3, pages 379–394). The type series was collected from deep-channel localities in the rio Negro system, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Loricaria lundbergi Thomas & Rapp Py-Daniel, 2008 as a valid species.

The genus Loricaria is the nominal genus of the subfamily Loricariinae and one of the most species-rich and morphologically diverse genera within it. Members of Loricaria share the characteristic whiptail body plan: strongly depressed with extensive bony plating, a thread-like caudal filament, and complex lower-lip ornamentation. The genus-level revision and species diagnoses for this group are found primarily in Thomas & Rapp Py-Daniel (2008) and earlier revisions by Isbrücker and colleagues.

L. lundbergi is distinguished from most congeners by having abdominal plating confined to the pre-anal shield and posterior median abdominal area, with the pectoral girdle mostly naked (unplated). It is further separated from its closest congener in this respect, L. parnahybae, by a broader head (17.6–18.4% SL versus 13.7–15.8% SL), a smaller basicaudal plate, and a more conspicuous pattern of dark saddle marks and solid dark fin pigmentation.

Morphology

Loricaria lundbergi reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 5.5 in (SL), placing it among the smaller to mid-sized members of its genus. The body is elongated and highly depressed, with the head and trunk covered in keeled bony scutes. Coloration is brown with conspicuous dark saddle-like markings crossing the dorsum and extending partially onto the flanks; the fins show solid dark pigment rather than the faint or diffuse patterning seen in L. parnahybae.

A notable individual variation was documented in the original description: one specimen from the rio Mawarinuma (upper rio Negro) exhibited larger and bolder pigmentation and better-developed abdominal plates than the deep-channel type series. This geographic or ontogenetic variation suggests some plasticity in pigment expression across the species' range.

As in other Loricariinae, breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes on the head, pectoral spine, and adjacent surfaces. The lower lip is characteristically broad and fleshy, suited to adhering to hard substrates in current. The caudal filament, formed by the elongated upper caudal-fin rays, is present as a genus trait.

Habitat

Loricaria lundbergi inhabits the rio Negro system, a defining blackwater drainage of the Amazon basin. The rio Negro's waters are among the most acidic and ion-poor of any major river system in the world: dark with dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from the surrounding vegetation, extremely soft, low in conductivity, and with pH values frequently between 3.5 and 5.5 in its core reaches. It is one of the most chemically extreme environments inhabited by any suckermouth catfish.

Unusually for a loricariid, L. lundbergi has been collected at depths of 8–19 metres in river channel habitats (FishBase, Ref. 79031 = Thomas & Rapp Py-Daniel 2008). This places it in a deep, fast-flowing, riverine microhabitat rather than the shallow margins or rocky riffles where many whiptails are typically found. The substrate in these deep channels is predominantly sand, fine gravel, and organic debris. Specimens are known from geographically disparate localities within the rio Negro drainage — including the Venezuelan portion of the basin and sites in the Brazilian state of Amazonas.

Feeding

Stomach contents from a single specimen (3 in SL) documented in the original description (Thomas & Rapp Py-Daniel 2008) included aquatic insect larvae (Chironomidae), sclerotized body parts of unidentified insect larvae, organic detritus, and sand. This profile is consistent with a benthic opportunistic feeder that ingests invertebrates and fine organic matter from the channel floor, supplemented by incidental sand ingestion while processing substrate.

The trophic level of 2.5 (FishBase) aligns with a diet low on the food chain — detritus and small invertebrates — rather than a piscivorous or highly predatory mode. The deep channel habitat likely provides a consistent supply of chironomid larvae and settled organic debris from the water column.

Mating

Specific observations on courtship in L. lundbergi are not available in published sources. The species shares the Loricariinae pattern in which males develop elaborate interopercular and pectoral odontodes during reproductive condition, serving both in male-male competition and mate assessment. The deep, fast-flowing channel habitat in which L. lundbergi occurs may impose constraints on mating site selection different from those of shallow-riffle relatives.

Given the extreme blackwater chemistry of the rio Negro, spawning likely occurs in seasonally modulated conditions, potentially triggered by the annual flood pulse that dilutes and cools the river system. No aquarium observations of courtship are documented for this species.

Breeding

No breeding observations of Loricaria lundbergi in captivity or the wild are recorded in accessible literature. Based on genus-level biology, paternal egg guarding is expected: Loricaria males typically guard a nest site or carry eggs on a substrate surface, fanning the clutch and defending it from disturbance. Whether the deep-channel habitat of L. lundbergi corresponds to a modified nest site strategy — potentially using rocky crevices or submerged wood at depth — is unknown.

The species has not entered the ornamental trade and has not been bred in aquaria. Data on clutch size, incubation duration, and fry biology remain absent from the published record.

In the aquarium

Loricaria lundbergi is not known in the aquarium hobby. Its deep-channel blackwater habitat makes it ecologically challenging to replicate: the combination of extreme acidity (pH potentially below 5), very low mineral content, cool-to-warm temperatures, and strong current at depth is far from standard aquarium practice. Any aquarist wishing to maintain the species would need to invest significantly in water softening and acidification to approach the ion-poor conditions of the rio Negro.

The fish is not available in the trade, and no captive husbandry literature exists for guidance. Its modest size (under 5.5 in SL) would be compatible with a mid-to-large aquarium in terms of space, but the water-chemistry demands are the primary barrier.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Loricaria lundbergi as Least Concern, with the evaluation completed on 14 October 2020. The species is distributed across remote areas of the rio Negro basin — portions of which remain among the least-developed large river systems in the Amazon — and no specific threats are documented in the assessment.

The rio Negro basin is subject to increasing pressure from gold-mining operations (garimpo), which introduce mercury contamination and sediment into blackwater systems. Deforestation in catchment areas can alter the tannic acid and humic chemistry that defines the rio Negro's water quality — changes that would affect specialist blackwater organisms. For now, however, L. lundbergi is not considered to be at elevated risk at the species level.
