Bryconops inpai is a slender, schooling characoid from the blackwater streams and forest rivers of the upper Rio Negro and Casiquiare basins in Brazil and Venezuela. Named in honour of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia — the Brazilian research institute whose fieldwork support made the type collection possible — this small species navigates softly acidic, tannin-stained waters alongside close relatives in mixed-species schools, feeding opportunistically at the surface and mid-water on insects and drifting organic matter. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2020, it appears broadly stable across a wide Amazonian and Orinoco range.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconops inpai was originally described in 1968 by H.A. Knöppel, W. Junk, and J. Géry, with the type locality recorded as Reserva Ducke, Igarapé Barro Branco near Manaus, on the Amazon River system of Brazil; the holotype is deposited at INPA (catalogue number INPA 10798). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names) recognises the current combination as Bryconops inpai Knöppel, Junk & Géry, 1968, and the species is placed in the family Iguanodectidae — a Neotropical family of small, active schooling fishes historically treated within the broad assemblage Characidae.

The genus Bryconops is moderately species-rich and encompasses streamlined, laterally compressed fishes of the lowland Amazon and Orinoco basins. Bryconops inpai is one of the smaller members of the genus and is representative of the group of species associated with blackwater, acidic forest streams rather than larger whitewater rivers.

Morphology

Bryconops inpai is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching approximately 4 in total length. The body plan is typical of the genus: moderately elongated with a pointed snout, a relatively small mouth, and a forked caudal fin. The lateral line is complete and the fins are unremarkable in shape, lacking the elaborate extensions or adipose-fin modifications seen in some allied groups.

Colouration in life is not extensively documented in the literature available, but members of this genus are generally silvery-sided with darker dorsal pigmentation and often a dark mid-lateral stripe or shoulder spot. The species is benthopelagic — moving through the water column rather than holding close to the substrate — and schooling behaviour likely contributes to the overall silvery, reflective appearance typical of mid-water prey fish in Amazonian blackwater environments.

Habitat

The species is associated with the Rio Negro basin and the Casiquiare canal drainage in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela — a region dominated by darkly stained, ion-poor blackwater draining through ancient Guiana Shield geology. These waters are characterised by very low pH, low dissolved minerals, and warm, stable temperatures. FishBase records water parameters for the species of pH 5.6–6.4, hardness approximately 0.7–2 dH, and water temperatures between 24 and 81 °F — classic soft, acidic Amazonian blackwater.

Within this broad hydrographic context, Bryconops inpai occupies the water column of streams and rivers, where it is benthopelagic and forms mixed schools. The IUCN assessment classifies the habitat as freshwater wetlands including permanent rivers and streams. The species has also been recorded alongside its close relative Bryconops giacopinii in these mixed aggregations, a pattern common among schooling characoids exploiting similar foraging niches in the same water body.

Feeding

Bryconops inpai feeds on insects and organic materials encountered at the surface or in the mid-water column, as recorded in the IUCN assessment citing Zuanon et al. (2016). This places it among the many Amazonian characoids that exploit the rain of terrestrial arthropods falling onto the water surface — a seasonally and spatially variable but predictable food source in forest-edged streams — as well as aquatic invertebrates and organic detritus carried by the current.

The relatively small, non-protractile mouth typical of Bryconops is consistent with picking off smaller invertebrate prey items rather than handling large or hard-shelled food. In a mixed-school context, group foraging may help individuals locate patches of surface-fallen insects more efficiently than solitary feeding would allow.

Mating

Specific courtship observations for Bryconops inpai are not documented in the available literature. The IUCN assessment notes that spawning occurs in the rainy season (Zuanon et al. 2016), which is the pattern typical of most Amazonian characoids — rising water levels, flooded forest, and increased food availability trigger reproductive activity. Like other members of the family Iguanodectidae, B. inpai is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care.

In related Bryconops species, males do not appear to develop pronounced secondary sexual characteristics, and the sexes are similar in external appearance outside of possible gravidity in females. Courtship is likely brief and opportunistic within the school context rather than involving extended pair bonding or territory defence.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Bryconops inpai have been documented in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature, and the species is rarely if ever encountered in the aquarium trade. By analogy with closely related iguanodectid and characoid fishes, breeding would be expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern: free-spawning over submerged vegetation or open substrate, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and fry that are initially very small and dependent on fine particulate food.

The rainy-season spawning trigger documented in the wild suggests that simulating rising water level, a slight temperature increase, and the introduction of soft, acidic water could stimulate breeding in a specialised setting, but this remains theoretical for this species specifically. Data are sparse.

In the aquarium

Bryconops inpai is not a mainstream aquarium species and is rarely available in the hobby. When encountered — typically as a bycatch in shipments of Rio Negro blackwater fishes — it should be housed in a dimly lit, softwater aquarium that replicates the tannin-stained conditions of its native streams: pH 5.5–6.5, very soft water, temperatures around 75–81 °F, and dark substrate with driftwood and leaf litter to replicate the blackwater aesthetic and provide cover.

As a schooling species it should be kept in groups of at least six individuals. It is likely a peaceful fish compatible with other small Amazonian species of similar temperament and water requirements — small pencilfish, smaller dwarf cichlids, or other blackwater tetras. Feeding is not expected to be problematic; the natural diet of insects and organic material translates readily to live and frozen foods (small flies, Daphnia, mosquito larvae) and high-quality micropellets or flake. The species' relative rarity in the trade means that captive husbandry notes are limited.

Conservation

Bryconops inpai is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published in 2023 from a September 2020 evaluation. The justification rests on the species' wide distribution across the Rio Negro and Orinoco basins and the absence of documented major threats. Population trend is listed as unknown, though the species appears common within Brazil according to ICMBio (2018).

The upper Rio Negro and Casiquiare region, while remote, is not free of pressure: deforestation, gold mining (garimpo), and associated mercury contamination are persistent concerns for the blackwater river systems of this part of Amazonia. These threats are not species-specific but affect the entire biota of the region. For now, the species' wide range and apparent abundance provide a buffer, and no targeted conservation measures are in place or considered necessary under the current assessment.
