Taxonomy & naming
Loricariichthys rostratus was formally described by Roberto E. Reis and Edson H. L. Pereira in 2000 in Copeia (volume 2000, number 4, pp. 1038–1056), as part of a revision of the genus Loricariichthys that yielded seven new species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; species id 65951) recognises the valid combination Loricariichthys rostratus Reis & Pereira, 2000.
Loricariichthys is one of the core genera within subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptails — a group defined by an elongated, dorsoventrally flattened body, reduced dorsal and caudal armature toward the tail, and the presence of a distinctive lower lip morphology in males that functions in reproduction. The genus epithet Loricariichthys compounds the family root Loricaria with the Greek ichthys (fish), essentially 'a loricariid fish'. The species epithet rostratus is Latin for 'beaked' or 'snouted', alluding to a prominent snout profile.
Morphology
Loricariichthys rostratus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 11 in, making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body follows the general loricariin plan: strongly depressed and elongated, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle, with the dorsal surface armoured in keeled bony plates. The ventral surface is softer and partly unplated, particularly toward the tail region.
The most conspicuous feature is the lower lip of adult males, which becomes greatly enlarged and fleshy during the breeding season — forming a broad, spongy pad capable of anchoring and carrying a substantial egg mass. Outside the breeding season this lip expansion is less dramatic but still visible in mature males. Females lack this hypertrophied lip.
The snout is moderately projecting, contributing to the rostrate appearance that gives the species its name. Like other Loricariichthys, the mouth is bordered by well-developed lips with papillae suited to scraping detrital films from surfaces. Coloration is typically drab — olive-brown to grey-brown above, paler below — which provides camouflage against silt and sand substrates.
Habitat
The type locality of L. rostratus is the Rio São Francisco Falso, a tributary near the border of Diamante do Oeste and Santa Helena municipalities in Paraná state, Brazil (approximately 24°54′S, 54°12′W), situated within the upper Paraná drainage. Distribution extends through the La Plata basin above the Paraguay River confluence, encompassing portions of southern Brazil and adjacent Argentina.
Loricariichthys rostratus inhabits lowland river channels and their associated floodplain environments, where it occupies demersal positions on silty or sandy substrates. Like many loricariin whiptails, it is described as a facultative air-breather, capable of gulping atmospheric oxygen when dissolved oxygen levels drop — an adaptation valuable in the slow-moving, warm, and seasonally oxygen-depleted waters of the La Plata lowlands. The species is considered subtropical in its thermal tolerances, reflecting the temperate-to-subtropical climate of the upper Paraná watershed.
Feeding
Members of the genus Loricariichthys are dietary generalists by loricariid standards, consuming a varied mix of detritus, bottom sediments, algae, microcrustaceans, fungi, plant fragments, and larval insects scraped from the substrate. The flattened ventral mouth and lip papillae are well adapted for this bottom-feeding strategy, allowing the fish to move methodically across silt and sand, processing the uppermost organic layer.
No specific gut-content data from wild-caught L. rostratus are documented in the available literature, but the feeding biology is presumed to match the genus-level pattern. In an aquarium setting, sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and quality sinking catfish foods would be appropriate, supplemented with the biofilm and detritus that accumulate naturally in a mature tank.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in L. rostratus is not described in detail in the primary literature, but the pronounced sexual dimorphism of the lower lip in males points strongly to a system in which males compete for and secure females through display or direct competition, with the enlarged lip playing a signalling role in addition to its functional brooding role. The male's spongy lip is presumably already partially developed by the time of courtship, allowing females to assess brooding capability.
This lip-brooding mating system is most fully described for related species such as Loricariichthys maculatus, where males are reported to pursue females and maintain contact through the prespawning period before guiding spawning to a suitable substrate.
Breeding
The most distinctive feature of Loricariichthys rostratus's reproductive biology is paternal lip-brooding: after spawning, the male attaches the egg mass to his hypertrophied, spongy lower lip and carries it — ventilating the eggs as he moves and resting with the clutch pressed against the substrate. This is an unusual strategy even within Loricariidae, where most brooding species confine eggs to a cave or crevice. Lip-brooding allows the male to move with the clutch and potentially relocate it if the site is disturbed.
No aquarium breeding reports for L. rostratus specifically appear in the available literature, and the species is not established in the hobby trade. Data on clutch size, incubation period, or fry development must therefore be inferred from the genus-level pattern documented in better-known relatives. Breeding in captivity would likely require large tanks, a sandy substrate, and stable tropical-to-subtropical water conditions.
In the aquarium
Loricariichthys rostratus is essentially unknown in the hobby. At 11 in SL it is a large catfish requiring a spacious aquarium — a tank of 80 US gal or more would be the minimum for an adult. The species is not reported in the ornamental trade, and wild-caught specimens are unlikely to be available outside of occasional specialist imports.
Should specimens be obtained, the care requirements can be inferred from the species' natural habitat: a large, well-filtered tank with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, minimal current relative to Andean species, and water parameters reflecting the subtropical La Plata system — temperatures roughly in the range of 64–79 °F, neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and moderate hardness. The facultative air-breathing habit means the fish must have free access to the water surface.
Diet should emphasise sinking, vegetable-based foods and quality sinking pellets. The species is not a wood-eater and does not require driftwood for nutritional purposes, though wood and caves would provide structural complexity and shelter.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Loricariichthys rostratus as Least Concern in October 2020, based on its distribution within the upper Paraná basin and no evidence of significant population decline at the time of assessment.
The upper Paraná is one of South America's most heavily modified river systems: the Itaipú and other dams have fundamentally altered hydrology, sediment transport, and floodplain connectivity along much of its length. While the LC assessment reflects the current state of knowledge, the long-term impact of these hydrological changes on demersal, floodplain-associated species like L. rostratus warrants continued monitoring.
