At a maximum of about 1.5 in, Otocinclus vestitus is one of the smallest catfishes in the ornamental trade and one of the most effective natural algae cleaners available to the planted-tank aquarist. Described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1872 from Peruvian Amazon tributaries, it was one of the first Otocinclus to be scientifically named — and it remains among the more widespread members of a genus that has proven more species-rich and taxonomically complicated than its modest size would suggest.

Taxonomy & naming

Otocinclus vestitus was described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1872 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 23, page 283, with accompanying plate), from specimens collected in tributaries of the Río Ampiyacu near Pebas, approximately 3°40′S, 71°45′W, Departamento Loreto, Peru. The lectotype (ANSP 8283) was designated by Schaefer (1997), who also conducted the most comprehensive modern revision of the genus.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Otocinclus vestitus Cope 1872 as the valid name. The species has no commonly used synonyms. It belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within Loricariidae, one of the 'smaller-body' lineages of armoured catfishes — though the boundaries of this subfamily have been debated, and Schaefer's (1991, 1997) revisions remain the primary taxonomic reference.

The genus Otocinclus currently contains around 19 valid species (as of recent Catalog of Fishes counts), distributed across a vast South American range from Peruvian Amazonia to the Río de la Plata basin. Within this genus, O. vestitus is distinguished by a combination of lateral stripe pattern, dentition, and meristic characters detailed by Schaefer (1997). Several species are still sold as 'otocinclus' without reliable identification at the species level in the trade.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL), with total length typically around 1.5 in. The body is elongate and subcylindrical, tapering toward the caudal peduncle. As in all Otocinclus, the ventral surface is broadly flattened with a sucking disc formed by fleshy lips and a papillose oral disc suited to adhesion on leaf and glass surfaces.

Coloration is characteristically brown to olive-tan dorsally with a pale or silvery ventral surface. A dark mid-lateral stripe runs from the snout to the caudal fin base, where it typically expands into a caudal spot or blotch — a pattern shared with several congeners. The stripe may be continuous or somewhat broken depending on the individual. The flank scutes of the loricariid armour produce a slight iridescence in good light.

Sexing is straightforward in conditioned adults: females are noticeably larger and more broadly rounded in the abdomen than males, especially when viewed from directly above. The difference becomes conspicuous in gravid females. No external genital papilla sexing (as in Corydoras) is reliably documented for this species in the literature, but the general body-width difference is consistent enough to be useful.

The genus lacks the interopercular odontodes prominent in Ancistrus and Chaetostoma, and the snout bears no tentacles. The mouth is positioned ventrally, with relatively simple multicusped teeth suited to scraping soft algal biofilms.

Habitat

The Catalog of Fishes places O. vestitus in the Amazon and upper Paraná River basins, and hobbyist collection records (Koerber & Litz, 2014, 2016; Koerber et al., 2017–2023) have documented a wide range from Peruvian Amazonia through Colombia and Bolivia to the Paraná drainage in Argentina and Uruguay — one of the broadest verified distributions in the genus.

The type locality (Río Ampiyacu near Pebas, Loreto, Peru) is a white-water tributary of the upper Amazon, characterised by relatively warm, slightly turbid, moderately soft water. In the Amazon basin more broadly, otocinclus are typically found in shallow, well-vegetated marginal habitats: flooded leaf litter, submerged aquatic vegetation, and the surfaces of emergent macrophytes where biofilm accumulates. They are rarely in open, deep-water zones.

In the Paraná and La Plata systems, conditions can include cooler temperatures and slightly harder, more alkaline water — consistent with the species' apparent tolerance for a wide range of water chemistry. Field collections span temperatures roughly from 72 °F to 84 °F. This wide natural tolerance makes O. vestitus arguably the most adaptable of the commonly kept otocinclus, tolerating a broader range of water conditions than the highland stream specialists in the genus.

Feeding

Like all Otocinclus, O. vestitus is a grazer of soft algal biofilm and aufwuchs — the thin community of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, protozoans, and bacteria that coats submerged surfaces including plant leaves, smooth wood, glass, and substrate. The oral disc is well adapted to conforming to irregular surfaces, and the multicusped teeth rasp away soft algal growth without damaging the underlying plant tissue — a trait that makes this species genuinely compatible with delicate planted aquaria.

In well-established planted tanks with a reasonable algae biofilm load, otocinclus can largely sustain themselves on in situ growth. However, in cleaner tanks — or as a steady supplement — sinking foods are essential. High-quality algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, and spinach are all readily accepted. The fish are often observed scraping the interior glass panes and the surfaces of broad-leaved plants such as Echinodorus, Anubias, and Amazon sword.

This species should not be kept in bare tanks with no algae or plant material and expected to survive on occasional bottom-feeding scraps from other fish. Starvation is the most common cause of otocinclus mortality in the first weeks after purchase. Purchasing only well-conditioned fish that are clearly feeding actively, and ensuring food is available from day one, dramatically improves survival.

Mating

In the aquarium, O. vestitus will often spawn without much deliberate encouragement in a stable, well-planted tank — particularly one with a good algae biofilm and regular partial water changes. Spawning behaviour is typical for the genus: males chase females in short bursts over plant leaves and broad flat surfaces. Multiple males may pursue the same female simultaneously.

Fertilisation appears to follow the T-position typical of otocinclus: the male presses alongside the female's head, and the female curls her body around the male's vent. Eggs are immediately deposited in a clutch on a leaf or glass surface. Unlike Corydoras (which carry eggs in cupped pelvic fins), otocinclus females do not hold eggs before deposition — the eggs are laid directly onto the adhesive surface.

Spawning in this species and close relatives has been photographed and documented by hobbyists, and images of spawning pairs of O. vestitus appear on PlanetCatfish. Water changes with slightly cooler water are often cited as a spawning trigger, mimicking the seasonal influx of cooler, oxygen-rich rain during the Amazonian wet season.

Breeding

Otocinclus vestitus is considered one of the more accessible otocinclus to breed in the aquarium, though consistent reproduction requires attention to nutrition and water quality. Captive breeding in the hobby has been documented informally. A well-planted 60-litre tank with a mature biofilm, stable water parameters (77–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water), and a group of at least four to six adults provides the best conditions.

Eggs are small and adhesive, deposited singly or in loose clusters on broad plant leaves (Anubias and Echinodorus are preferred), the aquarium glass, or flat smooth surfaces. A typical spawning produces 20–50 eggs. There is no parental care — eggs and fry are left entirely unguarded, and in a community tank the eggs are at risk of predation, including by the parents themselves. A dedicated breeding tank is advisable.

Eggs hatch in approximately 48–72 hours at 77 °F. The larvae are extremely small and require infusoria or commercial first foods (e.g., Sera Micron) for the first week before transitioning to small algae particles, powdered spirulina, and eventually the same algae wafers and blanched vegetables as adults. Fry are delicate and sensitive to poor water quality; frequent small water changes and minimal disturbance are important in the first weeks.

In the aquarium

Otocinclus vestitus has been a staple of the planted aquarium hobby for decades, prized for its small size, inoffensive temperament, and genuine effectiveness as an algae cleaner on plant leaves and glass. Its lack of aggression and minimal bioload make it compatible with virtually any peaceful community, from nano tanks with small tetras and shrimp to medium-sized planted aquaria.

A minimum group of four to six individuals is recommended; otocinclus are loosely shoaling fish and visibly more settled in groups — solitary specimens often become inactive and reclusive. A 40-litre planted tank can house a group of six comfortably. Water temperature of 72–82 °F suits this species; pH 6.5–7.5; soft to moderately hard water. Strong filtration is beneficial but the flow does not need to be torrential — unlike the rheophilic Chaetostoma.

The principal aquarium care challenge is ensuring adequate food. In tanks where diatom growth is limited, regular supplementation with algae wafers (placed after lights-out so more assertive tankmates do not claim them first) and blanched vegetables is essential. Commercial catfish wafers with high spirulina or algae content are preferred over protein-heavy formulas.

The species is entirely peaceful with plants, shrimp, and small fish. It is sometimes sold alongside the very similar Otocinclus affinis and O. macrospilus without clear identification; all are suitable for the same captive conditions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus vestitus as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting its broad geographic range across multiple major South American drainage systems — from Peruvian Amazonia through Colombia, Bolivia, and Argentina to the Paraná-La Plata basin — and the lack of evidence for population-level declines. The species is collected in substantial numbers for the ornamental fish trade throughout its range, particularly from Amazonian Peru and Colombia.

The volume of wild collection for the aquarium trade across the genus Otocinclus is substantial; estimates for the entire genus have reached millions of individuals per year exported from South America. Whether current collection levels are sustainable at the population level is not well-studied for O. vestitus specifically. However, the species' wide range, apparently high reproductive rate, and occurrence across many undisturbed habitats suggest that trade collection is not an immediate conservation concern.

Habitat conversion — particularly the clearing of riparian vegetation and the degradation of shallow marginal aquatic habitats through sedimentation and eutrophication from agricultural runoff — represents the longer-term threat. The Paraná populations in southern South America face additional pressure from river regulation and floodplain drainage. The species' broad range provides resilience that narrowly endemic otocinclus species lack.
