Described only in 2015 from Venezuelan Orinoco tributaries, Peckoltia lujani is a compact, elegantly patterned saddled pleco named in honour of ichthyologist Nathan Lujan — the very researcher whose field expeditions across some of South America's most remote river systems provided much of the material needed to untangle the species boundaries in this genus. Small, attractively marked, and inhabiting fast-flowing Orinoco drainages, it represents the kind of recently named loricariid that still appears only occasionally in specialist importations.

Taxonomy & naming

Peckoltia lujani was formally described by Jonathan W. Armbruster, David C. Werneke, and Milton Tan in 2015 in ZooKeys (volume 480, pages 97–123), as part of a revision of saddled loricariid catfishes that also reviewed Hemiancistrus and allied genera. The paper simultaneously synonymised several former Hemiancistrus into an expanded Peckoltia, whose species-level limits are now underpinned primarily by molecular phylogenetics (Lujan et al. 2015) rather than morphology alone.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 73654) recognises Peckoltia lujani Armbruster, Werneke & Tan, 2015 as valid, placing it in subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini. FishBase records the species in Hypostominae with 9 total dorsal soft rays and 5 anal soft rays. No L-number or trade code has been assigned.

P. lujani is the sister species of P. wernekei (Armbruster & Lujan, 2016), which was described from Ventuari River specimens; the two can be distinguished by jaw angle (>90° in P. lujani vs. <90° in P. wernekei), abdomen markings (lacking blotches in P. lujani vs. large faint blotches in P. wernekei), and several meristic characters.

Morphology

Peckoltia lujani is a small species, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in SL (FishBase, Ref. 99824 = Armbruster et al. 2015). The body shape is described as elongated for the genus. Like all Peckoltia, the fish is fully armoured in bony scutes, with a ventral suckermouth bearing multi-cusped teeth arranged in the pectinate rows typical of Ancistrini.

The colour pattern features prominent dark dorsal saddles — the defining characteristic of the 'saddled pleco' grouping within Peckoltia. Armbruster et al. (2015) diagnose the species further by the presence of bands in both the dorsal and caudal fins (vs. spots or no markings in several congeners); large spots or blotches on the posterolateral surface of the head and nape; and an abdomen that is largely naked (without plates) posterior to the pectoral girdle — a character shared with several Peckoltia species including P. braueri, P. compta, P. greedoi, and P. oligospila.

The dentaries meet at an angle greater than 90° (in fact greater than 120° in most specimens), with 20–37 dentary teeth and 23–45 premaxillary teeth — tooth counts higher than most congeners. Males develop evertible cheek odontodes extending posterior to the eye, a trait that can be used to distinguish the genus from Etsaputu and some Hemiancistrus.

Habitat

Peckoltia lujani is known from Venezuela and Colombia, within the Orinoco drainage (FishBase; Armbruster et al. 2015). The type locality and most documented specimens are from Venezuelan Orinoco tributaries, with the sister species P. wernekei collected from the Ventuari River drainage in Amazonas State, Venezuela — suggesting that P. lujani occupies adjacent or partially overlapping Orinoco drainages at lower latitudes or different tributaries.

The Orinoco system at these latitudes drains landscapes that include fast-flowing clear and blackwater tributaries from the Guiana Shield as well as slower, more turbid Llanos rivers. Peckoltia species in the upper and middle Orinoco are typically associated with rocky or pebble-substrate areas in clear to slightly tannin-stained water with moderate current, sheltering under rocks and in crevices by day and emerging to feed on periphyton and detritus after dark.

Water chemistry in Guiana Shield tributaries is characteristically soft and slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.8, conductivity often below 50 µS), while Llanos tributaries are more neutral and slightly harder. The precise water-chemistry preferences of P. lujani are not established in the literature; the Orinoco drainages of Venezuela suggest soft, warm, well-oxygenated water is the baseline.

Feeding

Peckoltia lujani, like all members of the genus, is an omnivore with a primary bias toward herbivory and aufwuchs grazing. The pectinate multi-cusped teeth are effective at rasping biofilm, periphyton, and fine algae from rock surfaces; the diet is supplemented by small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus encountered during substrate grazing.

Peckoltia species are less strongly committed to wood-eating than the Panaqolus/Panaque clade, and are generally classified as opportunistic omnivores in the broader loricariid literature. In the aquarium, algae wafers, spirulina tablets, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional small live or frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, small daphnia) form an appropriate diet.

Driftwood should be provided in the tank — both as a grazing surface for biofilm and as shelter — but is not a dietary necessity in the way it is for true xylophages. Regular small feedings after lights-out, when the fish is most active, help ensure it receives adequate nutrition in a competitive community tank.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship behaviour in P. lujani are published in the primary literature, but the general Ancistrini reproductive pattern is consistent across the tribe. Males establish territories around cavities or crevices, extending cheek odontodes in display and potentially engaging in brief contests with rival males. The prominent cheek odontodes of Peckoltia males, which extend posterior to the eye, may function in tactile display within cave entrances as well as in direct competition.

Females approach territories of their choosing; the male coaxes or guards the female into the chosen cavity. The interaction is typically brief — Peckoltia are not reported to engage in prolonged courtship rituals relative to some other loricariids — and spawning proceeds once a receptive female enters the nest site.

In a well-furnished aquarium with multiple caves and suitably conditioned fish, spontaneous spawning can occur; the small size of the species means a 25–40 US gal tank with several cave options can accommodate a breeding pair or a trio (one male, two females).

Breeding

Peckoltia lujani is presumed to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, following the reproductive strategy universal in tribe Ancistrini. The male guards the clutch inside a cavity, fanning eggs with his fins to oxygenate them and removing infertile or fungused eggs. Given the species' small adult size (max 3 in SL), clutch sizes are expected to be modest — likely in the range of a few dozen eggs — consistent with other small Peckoltia species.

No breeding reports have been published in the scientific literature for this species, and PlanetCatfish records (as of the most recent data available) reflect the species' rarity in the trade and limited captive-breeding history. The original description was published only in 2015, and only a handful of specialist importations have occurred since.

Successful breeding attempts with small Peckoltia in aquaria generally involve: soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8, conductivity below 200 µS); temperatures of 79–82 °F; a tight-fitting cave or PVC tube of suitable internal diameter; a diverse diet; and regular partial water changes that slightly lower temperature and soften water to simulate wet-season conditions.

In the aquarium

Peckoltia lujani is a small (under 3 in), attractively patterned pleco that is, at present, a genuine rarity in the hobby — the species has been in the hobby literature only since its description in 2015 and appears in trade importations from Venezuela on an irregular basis. For experienced loricariid keepers seeking a compact, scientifically interesting recent discovery, it offers considerable appeal.

A single individual or a pair can be maintained comfortably in an 20–25 US gal tank; a breeding group of one male and two females requires 30–40 US gal with multiple cave structures. Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0, up to about 10 dGH), temperature 77–84 °F, with well-oxygenated flow. The Orinoco origin demands warmer conditions than, say, the subtropical Hypostomus of the La Plata — this is a tropical species with little cold tolerance.

Decoration with smooth river pebbles, driftwood, and small caves or sections of PVC pipe mimics the rocky tributary habitat. The species is peaceful toward other fish but males should be provided with clearly separated territories to minimise aggression. Compatible tankmates include small tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids (particularly Apistogramma of Orinoco provenance), and peaceful Corydoras.

Identification in the trade is complicated by the existence of related Peckoltia species from the same region — particularly P. caenosa, which overlaps geographically and can resemble P. lujani superficially, especially as juveniles. Confirmed P. lujani should show banded dorsal and caudal fins, large blotches on the nape and head sides, largely naked abdomen, and jaw angle >90°.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia lujani as Least Concern in 2020 (FishBase Ref. 130435; IUCN URL: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/176112424/176112516; assessment date 21 August 2020). The assessment reflects the absence of evidence for significant population decline and the species' occurrence across Venezuelan and Colombian Orinoco drainages.

The Orinoco system, while less impacted than the Amazon's Xingu basin, faces pressures from deforestation of Guiana Shield forest margins, hydrocarbon extraction activity in Venezuela and Colombia, and incremental agricultural expansion into tributary catchments. Clear, rocky-bottomed tributaries associated with the Guiana Shield are particularly sensitive to changes in terrestrial land cover, which directly alter the water chemistry (pH, hardness, dissolved organic carbon) and hydrological regime that species like P. lujani depend on.

Venezuelan aquarium fish export infrastructure has been variable since the mid-2010s, and the ornamental collection of Peckoltia species is small in volume. Captive breeding from the existing small hobby population represents an important route to sustaining availability, both for the trade and as a safeguard against collection pressure on what are likely naturally sparse wild populations in remote river reaches.
