Taxonomy & naming
Peckoltia pankimpuju was formally described by Lujan and Chamon in 2008 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 19, number 3, pages 271–282), from specimens collected at the Pongo de Manseriche on the Río Marañón, Departamento Amazonas, Peru. The original combination was Hemiancistrus pankimpuju; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now recognises the valid name Peckoltia pankimpuju following subsequent phylogenetic reassignment. The synonym Hemiancistrus pankimpuju remains in circulation in older literature and some online databases.
The species carries the DATZ registration number L350. Common names in hobbyist use include Coal Pleco and Peruvian Lyre-tail, the latter referencing the elongated outer rays of the caudal fin that develop in some specimens.
Peckoltia belongs to tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae, one of the five major subfamilial groupings within Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004). Within Peckoltia, the species was described as part of a broader treatment of deep-water and rapids-adapted loricariids of the upper Amazon system. The 2008 paper by Lujan and Chamon is the primary reference for the species' morphology and distribution.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 5 in standard length (SL) per FishBase (reference 79810), which aligns with the original description. A figure of 15.5 in sometimes attributed to this species on some hobbyist databases represents a data-entry error and should be disregarded.
The body is covered in the typical loricariid armour of interlocking bony scutes. Ground coloration is dark — dusky brown to near-black ('coal') — consistent with cryptic coloration against the dark basalt and granite boulders of the Pongo de Manseriche. Pectoral fins are well-developed, as expected in a rapids-associated species that must resist current.
Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical of the genus. Males develop odontodes along the posterior margins of the body scutes and on the leading rays of the pectoral fins, particularly during the breeding season. Females remain unadorned in these areas but develop a noticeably wider body profile when viewed from above, especially in the region behind the pectoral fins, indicating gravidity. The genus is noted to possess facultative air-breathing capacity, a feature that may confer tolerance of low-oxygen conditions in trapped boulder pools.
Habitat
The known distribution of Peckoltia pankimpuju centres on the Pongo de Manseriche and the wider upper Marañón and Huallaga river systems in Peru. The type locality — a marginal right-bank boulder field at the head of the gorge (4°27'38"S, 77°34'53"W, approximately 22 mi northeast of Juan Velasco, Departamento Amazonas) — is one of the most topographically dramatic reaches of any South American river, where the Marañón cuts through the Cordillera Oriental in a narrow canyon before emerging onto the Amazon lowlands.
Microhabitat records indicate rock piles and wood tangles within fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water. Substrate is predominantly large boulders and coarse gravel. No water chemistry data (pH, temperature) for the type locality are available in the published record, but the upper Marañón at this elevation typically carries cool, moderately turbid Andean whitewater — soft to moderately hard with neutral to slightly alkaline pH during high-water periods and harder, warmer water during the dry season.
FishBase classifies the species as freshwater, demersal, and tropical. Population resilience is estimated as medium, with an estimated population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years.
Feeding
No specific dietary data for Peckoltia pankimpuju have been published. Based on genus-level biology, Peckoltia species are broadly omnivorous benthic foragers — they rasp algae, biofilm, and aufwuchs from rock surfaces, and supplement with invertebrates and detritus. The species does not belong to the wood-eating lineages (Panaque, Panaqolus), so driftwood is habitat furniture rather than a dietary staple.
In the aquarium, a mixed diet suits the species: algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, sinking pellets, and occasional protein items such as bloodworm or brine shrimp. Rock surfaces with established biofilm enrichment are beneficial. The cave-dwelling tendencies described by keepers suggest food should be offered near shelters in the evening, when these nocturnal fish are most active.
Mating
No breeding observations for Peckoltia pankimpuju have been documented in the published literature or in hobbyist records as of the cache date. General Peckoltia courtship follows the broader loricariid pattern: males become territorial around caves or crevice shelters, displaying odontode development to rivals and prospective mates. The dimorphism between males (odontode-bearing, narrower body) and females (wider behind pectorals when gravid) is an indicator of conditioning and readiness.
Given the species' origin in boulder-field rapids, it likely requires well-oxygenated, flowing water and tight cave-like spaces for mating to be triggered in captivity. The low keeper count — fewer than ten registered keepers reported on hobbyist databases — means breeding in aquaria has not been widely attempted, and direct observations are absent.
Breeding
Peckoltia pankimpuju is inferred to be a cave spawner based on the reproductive biology of congeneric species, but no breeding accounts specific to this species are on record. Other Peckoltia are documented cave-spawners in which the male guards the clutch within a defended crevice, fanning eggs to maintain oxygen flow until the fry are free-swimming.
In the absence of confirmed data, aquarists wishing to attempt breeding should follow the approach used for related species: provide multiple narrow cave options (ceramic tubes, sections of slate, PVC pipe of appropriate diameter), maintain good water flow and quality, and condition prospective pairs on a varied diet. Slight temperature reduction followed by a gradual increase has been used to simulate the seasonal cues that trigger spawning in related Andean loricariids.
In the aquarium
Peckoltia pankimpuju is a modestly sized pleco (up to 5 in SL) suitable for medium aquaria. A minimum tank of 25–30 US gal is reasonable for a single specimen, with larger tanks required if multiple specimens or other territorial bottom-dwellers are included. The species' natural habitat in boulder-strewn rapids calls for good water circulation, high dissolved oxygen, and efficient filtration.
Furnishings should include rock piles and at least one cave of an appropriate size. Driftwood is beneficial for shelter and secondary biofilm grazing even if the species is not a primary wood-eater. Plants are not essential given the species' natural substrate, but robust species anchored to wood (Anubias, Java fern) can be incorporated safely.
The species is described by its few keepers as peaceful with small fish and shrimp. Tankmates should avoid large or aggressive species that could stress a relatively timid cave-dweller. Avoid housing with other territorial plecos in confined quarters. Water quality should be kept high: weekly partial water changes, zero ammonia and nitrite, and moderate nitrates are appropriate targets.
Owing to the small number of hobbyist records, some care parameters remain inferred from congeners rather than direct observation of this species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia pankimpuju as Least Concern in 2014, reflecting an apparently stable population in a geographically restricted but largely intact watershed. The Pongo de Manseriche and surrounding upper Marañón are remote and difficult of access, which has historically limited direct anthropogenic pressure on aquatic habitats at the type locality.
The species' restricted known range — centred on a single dramatic gorge system — warrants monitoring. Hydroelectric development along Andean tributaries of the Amazon, sedimentation from road construction and deforestation on upper watershed slopes, and illegal artisanal mining are ongoing threats in the broader Marañón basin. How these activities affect populations at the Pongo specifically is not well documented. The species is sporadically collected for the ornamental trade; with such a low keeper count, demand is minimal and captive breeding is not established.
