Peckoltia sabaji is a mid-sized loricariid from the broad arc of rivers draining the Guiana Shield — Essequibo, Orinoco, Rio Negro, and beyond — with a complex of trade codes (L075, L124, L301, LDA002) reflecting how widely it is distributed and how many times it reached European importers under different names. A versatile cave-spawning pleco that tops out at roughly 10 in, it is sturdy enough for mixed cichlid tanks yet calm enough not to trouble small fish, and has been bred reliably in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Peckoltia sabaji was described by Jonathan W. Armbruster in 2003, published in Zootaxa number 344 (pages 6, figures 2–4). The holotype (UG 11041, ex AUM 35555) was collected 4 mi west-southwest of the village of Sand Creek (2.96656°N, 59.56943°W), Essequibo River drainage, Rupununi Region (Region 9), Guyana. Paratypes are held at ANSP, AUM, and SIUC.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) recognises the valid combination Peckoltia sabaji Armbruster 2003 as a species of Loricariidae: Hypostominae with distribution in the Orinoco River basin (Colombia, Guyana, and Venezuela). The species was previously circulated under the synonym Hemiancistrus sabaji, and that combination appears in some earlier literature, but CoF consistently treats Peckoltia sabaji as the valid name, supported by Armbruster & Werneke (2005), Ferraris (2007), Fisch-Muller et al. (2012), and Armbruster et al. (2015).

The hobby trade codes reflect wide geographic sampling: L075 (from Venezuela/Orinoco material), L124 (from a separate import believed to originate in Guyana), L301 (another import wave), and LDA002 (the first 'Das Aquarium' code applied). All four are now synonymised to a single taxon by PlanetCatfish. The genus Peckoltia is named after Gustavo Peckolt, a member of the Natural History Commission of Rondon.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 10 in SL (PlanetCatfish), making P. sabaji a medium-to-large pleco for the genus — considerably larger than Peckoltia compta or P. vittata, for example, but not approaching the scale of Panaque or Pterygoplichthys. The body is covered in typical loricariid scutes; the general colour pattern is a warm olive-brown to tan ground overlaid with a network of darker brown spots and reticulations, forming an intricate maze-like or reticulate pattern over the head, body, and fins. Field specimens and aquarium photos show moderate variation in the density and contrast of the reticulation between collection localities (e.g., Rio Xingu, Rio Jatapu, and Rio Curuá-Una forms appear subtly different on PlanetCatfish).

The head is broad and flattened, typical of Peckoltia; the sucker-like mouth is ventral and well-developed for rasping rock and wood surfaces. The teeth are slender and multi-cusped — not the spatulate form of Panaque — consistent with an omnivorous/detritivorous rather than strictly xylophagous ecology.

Sexual dimorphism is evident with practice. Males develop small tooth-like odontodes on the leading pectoral fin rays and along the posterior half of the body when in reproductive condition; females lack these ornaments and appear broader in the area just behind the pectoral fins when viewed dorsally (PlanetCatfish). Genital papilla examination provides a reliable secondary indicator.

Habitat

Per the Catalog of Fishes, P. sabaji occurs in the Orinoco River basin in Colombia, Guyana, and Venezuela. PlanetCatfish extends the distribution to include Amazon tributaries — Lower Amazon, Rio Negro (Middle Amazon), and coastal rivers of the Guyanas including the Essequibo (the type locality). PlanetCatfish habitat images show the type locality as a stream with clear water, coarse gravel and cobble substrate, and submerged wood; another image documents a Tapajós locality (Itaituba, Middle Tapajós) with a rock-and-wood bottom.

The breadth of river systems in which this species occurs spans a wide range of water chemistry: the Essequibo is a clear blackwater/clearwater Guiana Shield river; the Orinoco tributaries range from whitewater to blackwater; the Amazon tributaries include both turbid whitewater and clear-water systems. PlanetCatfish records pH 6.0–7.6 and temperature 75–79 °F as broadly representative husbandry parameters. Flowing water is preferred but not obligatory, reflecting an adaptable ecology suited to both rapid and gentle current.

Microhabitat, inferred from specimen collection data and captive behaviour, is among submerged wood tangles, bedrock outcrops, and root accumulations in stream margins with moderate current — the typical niche for mid-sized Peckoltia.

Feeding

Peckoltia sabaji is a generalised omnivore-detritivore, unlike the strict xylophages Panaque and Panaqolus. Its slender, multi-cusped teeth are suited to scraping algae, biofilm, and aufwuchs from rock and wood surfaces rather than excavating wood grain. In captivity the species accepts a wide range of foods: sinking algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), fresh or frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia), and sinking pellets.

Driftwood should still be present in the tank — the fish will rasp the surface and may ingest wood fibre incidentally while grazing biofilm — but it is not the dietary cornerstone that it is for Panaque. The practical implication is that P. sabaji is considerably easier to feed than a strict xylophage: a varied standard pleco diet with regular vegetable offerings is appropriate, and the fish can subsist on aquarium biofilm and left-over food between feedings. Overfeeding protein-rich foods to loricariids generally promotes fatty degeneration; a balance of vegetable, algae, and moderate invertebrate offerings is preferable.

Mating

Courtship in P. sabaji has been observed by aquarists and is documented across PlanetCatfish breeding accounts and in the CotM profile (May 2004). Males select and defend a cave site — a hollow piece of driftwood, a ceramic spawning tube, or a tight crevice — and display to females using extended interopercular odontodes and occasional brief mouth-locked confrontations with rival males. A receptive female is visibly broader across the mid-body and may approach the male's cave site directly.

The male typically initiates the final approach, nudging or circling the female before she enters the cave. The pair may spend several hours inside before spawning. Males in condition have obvious pectoral odontodes and a leaner profile compared with gravid females; this visible size and morphology contrast can help identify a compatible pair in a mixed-sex group. PlanetCatfish images include a pair photo (female on the right) confirming visible body width dimorphism in adults.

Breeding

Peckoltia sabaji is a cave spawner with paternal brood care, well-documented in hobbyist accounts. PlanetCatfish images follow fry development from four-day-old eggs through two-day-old fry, seven-day-old fry, twelve-day-old fry, eighteen-day-old fry, twenty-two-day-old fry, and six-week-old juveniles, providing an unusually complete developmental record for a pleco. Eggs are adhesive and deposited on the inner cave wall; the male fans and guards throughout the incubation period of approximately 5–7 days at 77–79 °F.

Fry emerge small but well-formed, resembling miniature adults in coloration. The male continues guarding until fry begin to disperse — typically within 2–3 weeks. Captive breeding is achievable in tanks of 55 US gal or more with a cave of appropriate diameter (2.5–3 in internal), good water quality, and regular partial water changes. In the aquarium

Peckoltia sabaji's 10 in SL maximum makes it a medium-to-large pleco — larger than dwarf plecos like Hypancistrus or Peckoltia compta, but modest compared to Pterygoplichthys or large Panaque. An adult needs a tank of at least 55–65 US gal; a group or breeding pair requires 80 US gal minimum with multiple cave structures and wood tangles well distributed around the tank.

Water parameters should stay within pH 6.0–7.6 and temperature 75–79 °F, with reasonable flow. The species is described by PlanetCatfish as tolerant of a very wide array of tankmates: peaceful enough for small fish and shrimp, but robust enough to coexist with all but the largest, most aggressive cichlids. This flexibility makes it one of the more versatile plecos for mixed community tanks, including South American biotope setups with cichlids, tetras, and Corydoras.

Driftwood and rock piles should be provided as furnishing; the fish naturally occupies wood tangles and rocky outcrops. Plants are not vital but can be included if not delicate. Like all loricariids, P. sabaji produces substantial waste and benefits from efficient mechanical and biological filtration combined with 25–30% weekly water changes. Intraspecific aggression is manageable if cave sites are not scarce; multiple individuals can coexist given adequate space, unlike some of the more territorial genera.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia sabaji as Least Concern, last evaluated in 2020 (PlanetCatfish). The species has an extensive range across the Orinoco basin, Guiana Shield rivers, and portions of the Amazon basin, which reduces concern about global range contraction. It is frequently collected for the ornamental trade under multiple L-number designations and appears to tolerate a wide range of water conditions and microhabitats.

Captive breeding is documented and reproducible, which reduces — though does not eliminate — wild collection pressure. The Orinoco and Amazon basins face ongoing pressures from illegal gold mining (garimpo), agricultural deforestation, and hydroelectric development, all of which can degrade the rocky and woody substrates that Peckoltia depend on. At present, none of these pressures are considered sufficient to threaten P. sabaji at the species level given its broad distribution. The 2020 IUCN reassessment reflects improved baseline data; no change from LC was warranted.
