A mid-sized Amazonian loricariid known since 1908, Peckoltia vermiculata carries a dense, worm-like pattern — the vermiculate tracery that gives the species its name — across a body reaching 5 in SL. Despite more than a century in the ichthyological record, the species remains Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, a reflection of how little biological field data exists for most Amazonian plecos.

Taxonomy & naming

Peckoltia vermiculata was originally described by Steindachner in 1908 in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien (volume 45, number 11, 2 April 1908, page 166), from type material collected in Pará, Brazil. It was placed originally in the genus Ancistrus; Isbrücker transferred it to Peckoltia at species level in 1980 (page 57), creating the valid combination Peckoltia vermiculata recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

Two synonyms are recorded: Ancistrus vittatus vermiculata and Ancistrus vittatus vermiculatus, reflecting earlier usage as a subspecies of A. vittatus before the species was elevated to full species status within Peckoltia.

The genus Peckoltia was named for Gustavo Peckolt (1861–1923), a Brazilian-born German botanist and pharmacist who participated in the Natural History Commission of Rondon. Peckoltia belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae, and members of the genus share the general Ancistrus-grade body plan but differ in pattern, proportions, and the fine structure of the dentition. The specific epithet vermiculata is the Latin feminine past participle of vermiculari, meaning marked with worm-like tracery, a direct reference to the sinuous pattern covering the body.

Morphology

Adults reach 5 in SL, recorded by FishBase from Fisch-Muller (2003) — a moderate size for the Ancistrini, substantially larger than the small Ancistrus of the hobby but well short of the large Hypostomus and Pterygoplichthys sold as 'common plecos'.

The most visually distinctive feature of P. vermiculata is the dense vermiculate pattern: a network of pale, sinuous, worm-like lines and spots overlaid on a darker ground colour, covering the head, dorsum, and flanks. This pattern, from which the species takes its name, is present in juveniles and adults alike and distinguishes it from Peckoltia species with banded or spotted patterning.

Sexual dimorphism in P. vermiculata follows the general Peckoltia and Ancistrini pattern rather than the dramatic tentacle development of Ancistrus males. Males develop elongated odontodes on the leading pectoral fin ray and on the posterior body and interopercular region; females tend to be broader-bodied with a wider girth behind the pectoral fins when viewed from above. These characters are reliable in mature, well-conditioned fish but are subtler than the bushy tentacles of Ancistrus.

The mouth is ventrally positioned with multi-cusped teeth suited to surface rasping. The genus is noted among catfish keepers for robust constitution and tolerance of varied water conditions.

Habitat

Peckoltia vermiculata is recorded from the middle and lower Amazon River basin, with the type locality in Pará State, Brazil. PlanetCatfish lists its distribution across the Amazon, Middle Amazon (Solimões), and Lower Amazon sub-basins — a broad Amazonian footprint consistent with the large river floodplain and tributary network of this drainage.

FishBase records a temperature preference of 73–81 °F, consistent with the tropical lowland Amazon environment. The species is demersal, inhabiting the bottom zone in association with hard substrates — submerged wood, rocky outcrops, and firm riverbed — where it rasps biofilm and algae. The genus possesses facultative air-breathing capacity, an adaptation shared across much of Loricariidae that confers tolerance of episodically hypoxic conditions during seasonal flooding and in densely vegetated backwaters.

The broad Amazonian distribution suggests P. vermiculata is not strictly confined to a single habitat type but likely exploits the range of woody-substrate microhabitats available across the extensive várzea floodplain and terra firme river systems of the lower Amazon.

Feeding

Peckoltia vermiculata is a surface rasper feeding primarily on biofilm, algae, and associated organic material adhering to submerged wood and rock. No species-specific dietary data is available from field studies, but the genus-level and family-level feeding ecology is well characterised: Peckoltia species generally combine opportunistic algae and biofilm grazing with ingestion of fine detritus, and are not specialised wood-eaters in the manner of Panaque and Panaqolus.

In captivity, the species accepts the full range of loricariid community foods: spirulina-enriched sinking wafers, algae discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato), and occasional meaty supplements. Wood surfaces in the tank provide rasping material and shelter and are recommended. The species is noted by hobbyists as broadly compatible with community setups involving small fish and shrimp, and does not require specialist diet management beyond the standard loricariid plant-heavy approach.

Mating

Detailed courtship observations for P. vermiculata are absent from the published literature, and no breeding accounts are on record at PlanetCatfish. By analogy with related Peckoltia and broader Ancistrini, males are expected to establish territories around cave or crevice sites, using odontodes in both display and male–male contact encounters.

The subtle sexually dimorphic characters — broader female girth and the more elaborate pectoral and body odontodes of males — become useful indicators of sex in mature fish. Conditioning adults on a varied, nutritious diet and providing suitable spawning sites (woody tubes, ceramic caves) are the standard approaches for encouraging reproductive behaviour in the aquarium, applicable here in the absence of species-specific data.

Breeding

Peckoltia vermiculata is a cave-spawning species consistent with the Ancistrini reproductive strategy. No confirmed captive breeding reports have been documented in the public aquarist literature. The general expectation, based on close relatives within Peckoltia and the broader tribe, is that a male would guard a chosen cavity, and that paternal care — fanning of the egg mass and guarding of early fry — would follow the loricariid norm.

The absence of breeding records may reflect the species's limited representation in the hobby rather than genuine difficulty in breeding. Aquarists maintaining P. vermiculata and wishing to attempt breeding should follow standard Ancistrini protocol: well-conditioned pair on varied plant-based diet, stable warm water at 75–81 °F, provision of suitably sized wooden or ceramic spawning caves, and regular partial water changes to simulate seasonal cues.

In the aquarium

Peckoltia vermiculata is not commonly available in the aquarium trade and carries no L-number or widely used common name, limiting its distribution primarily to catfish collectors and enthusiasts of Amazonian loricariids. Its adult size of 5 in SL places it in the mid-size loricariid category — larger than the small Ancistrus but far more manageable than Hypostomus or Pterygoplichthys relatives.

A tank of 30–40 US gal with wood structure, caves, and rock provides a suitable environment for an adult. PlanetCatfish notes the species as compatible with a very wide range of tankmates including small fish and shrimp, and robust enough for all but the largest cichlids — a useful breadth of compatibility. Plants are not essential but robust wood-attaching species such as Anubias and Java fern can be included safely.

Water parameters should reflect the middle and lower Amazon: temperature 73–81 °F, pH broadly tropical (6.5–7.5), soft to moderately hard. Good filtration is important — benthic raspers generate significant organic waste. Regular partial water changes maintain water quality and support long-term health. The species should be provided with submerged driftwood as a mandatory furnishing element.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia vermiculata as Data Deficient, assessment completed 7 November 2018. The Data Deficient designation does not imply the species is rare or threatened; rather, it reflects that insufficient biological and population data were available to evaluate extinction risk at the time of assessment.

This is a striking circumstance for a species first described in 1908 — over a century in the ichthyological literature without accumulating enough field data to support a risk assessment. It reflects the broader data gap that affects the majority of Amazonian loricariids: vast, understudied river systems with locally diverse catfish communities where population surveys remain limited. The middle and lower Amazon face ongoing pressures from deforestation, sedimentation, and hydrological modification, and the conservation status of species like P. vermiculata may eventually require formal evaluation as survey coverage improves.
