Taxonomy & naming
Franz Steindachner described this species in 1881 in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien (volume 43, p. 115), placing it in Chaetostomus — the catch-all armoured catfish genus of the era — as Chaetostomus vittatus. Over the following century the combination migrated through Ancistrus vittatus before Isbrücker (1980) established the valid combination Peckoltia vittata that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises today. The current status is confirmed by a long series of revisionary works including Armbruster (2008), Armbruster et al. (2015), and Meza-Vargas et al. (2021).
Additional synonyms, now disused, include Peckoltia kuhlmanni and Peckoltichthys kuhlmanni. In the DATZ L-number system the species received the code L015, one of the earliest Loricariidae codes published in the German aquarium press in the early 1990s. Peckoltia is placed in tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004), one of the five major subfamilial groupings within Loricariidae.
A 2015 revision by Armbruster, Werneke, and Tan (ZooKeys 480) reviewed the genus Peckoltia and its allies, reconfirming P. vittata as a valid species with a diagnostic pigment pattern: a dark wedge on the snout and a bar from the posterior frontal to behind the parieto-supraoccipital, sometimes appearing as a dark 'E' on the snout in juveniles (Armbruster 2008, FishBase ref. 77026).
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL), with total length around 6–6.5 in; FishBase records a maximum of 6 in TL (Ref. 111518). The body follows the typical loricariid plan: strongly dorsoventrally flattened, covered in overlapping keeled scutes, with a large sucker-mouth positioned far ventrally and armed with bicuspid teeth suited for rasping biofilm and algae.
Ground colouration is dark brown to olive-brown, broken by a series of paler saddles or blotches that together create the distinctive striped appearance that earns the species its common name. The pattern is most crisply expressed in juveniles; large adults may show reduced contrast, particularly in head-to-dorsal-fin region patterning. Armbruster (2008) distinguishes P. vittata from congeners specifically by the snout wedge and the bar posterior to the frontal — these two pigment marks are diagnostic.
Dorsal fin formula: II, 7 (2 spines, 7 soft rays); anal fin I, 4. The dorsal spine is robust and locks in the erected position. Males develop interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) during the breeding season, and body odontodes appear along the posterior flank and pectoral fin spine. Females remain comparatively smooth-skinned and are noticeably broader across the body when gravid, most evident in a dorsal view behind the pectoral fin bases. Papilla shape — pointed in males, rounded and swollen in ripe females — is a reliable secondary indicator of sex.
Habitat
Peckoltia vittata occupies a large range across the Brazilian Amazon, including the lower Tapajós, Madeira, and Xingu drainages, as well as the Rio Uatumã, Trombetas, Capim, and Maranhão. FishBase also records a Venezuelan population in the Río Ventuari of the upper Orinoco drainage, and a Colombian record from the upper Río Guaviare. The type locality encompasses the Amazon River near Tajapouru, the Xingu near its mouth, and the Rio Madeira.
Field collections from Venezuela found the species on rocks in fast runs (Armbruster 2008), suggesting a preference for well-oxygenated, lotic environments with hard substrate. The Xingu populations inhabit the clear, fast-flowing, low-conductivity blackwater typical of that river's rocky canyon stretches. Water chemistry at Amazon collection sites varies considerably — FishBase records pH 5.0–7.5 and hardness 2–20 dH, temperatures 73–79 °F — but the common thread is high dissolved oxygen associated with current.
Microhabitat preference is rocky substrate interspersed with wood accumulations. The fish rest in crevices and under rock overhangs during daylight hours and emerge to forage nocturnally. This cryptic habit means wild populations are probably more abundant than casual survey numbers suggest.
Feeding
Peckoltia vittata is primarily an algae and biofilm grazer. FishBase records it as nocturnal and feeding on algae (Ref. 13371), with the bicuspid teeth adapted for scraping aufwuchs — the community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine detritus that colonises hard substrates in flowing water. Unlike the spoon-toothed wood-eating Panaque or Panaqolus, Peckoltia does not require large amounts of woody material as a dietary staple, though driftwood is valuable for shelter and as a substrate for the biofilm they graze.
In the aquarium the species is omnivorous and adaptable. High-quality sinking foods — algae wafers, spirulina discs, vegetable-based pellets — form a reliable dietary base. Blanched courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, and spinach are accepted. Small amounts of protein-rich foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia) are beneficial for conditioning, particularly before breeding. The species is not aggressive toward food and will compete quietly with other benthic fish.
Mating
Courtship follows the general Peckoltia pattern. Males become increasingly territorial as they approach breeding condition, patrolling cave and crevice sites and displaying elongated interopercular and dorsal odontodes to rivals. Territorial encounters between males consist mainly of body-to-body pushing and brief pectoral spine locks; fatalities are uncommon if adequate hiding places are available.
A receptive female — distinguishable by her broader girth when viewed from above and a swollen, rounded papilla — will be ushered toward the male's chosen cave. The male initiates contact and patrols the cavity entrance while the female inspects the interior. Multiple females can coexist with a single male in a sufficiently spacious aquarium, but two mature males in a confined space will produce chronic stress and fin damage.
Captive breeding accounts on PlanetCatfish document seven successful spawnings, confirming the species is tractable in the aquarium under appropriate conditions.
Breeding
Peckoltia vittata is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care. After spawning, the male remains in the cavity, fanning the egg mass continuously to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile or fungused eggs. Eggs are adhesive and amber to orange in colour, deposited on the cave walls or floor. PlanetCatfish breeding reports indicate seven successful aquarium spawnings.
At typical tank temperatures of 75–79 °F, incubation takes approximately 5–7 days. The fry emerge bearing yolk sacs that sustain them for several days before they begin actively rasping. They look like miniature adults almost from the start, showing the characteristic stripe-and-saddle pattern within the first few weeks of free-swimming life. PlanetCatfish documents fry development in detail: four-day-old fry still bear yolk sacs; by eight days they are free-swimming; at eight weeks and already 1.5 in they begin to resemble adults closely.
Conditioning adults on a varied diet, performing regular partial water changes (25–30% weekly), and providing a slight temperature drop of 34–36 °F followed by warming can trigger spawning attempts. Hollow driftwood sections, ceramic breeding tubes, or PVC pipe couplings with a tight entrance serve as suitable spawning sites.
In the aquarium
At up to 5.5 in SL, P. vittata is a genuine mid-sized pleco — larger than Panaqolus or Ancistrus but substantially smaller than the common pleco (Pterygoplichthys pardalis), which can exceed 19.5 in. A single adult is comfortable in a 100-litre aquarium; a pair or small group requires 40–55 US gal with ample rockwork and wood to define territories.
Water parameters should reflect the Amazonian origin: temperature 73–79 °F, pH 5.5–7.2, hardness soft to moderate (dH 2–15 is ideal, though the species tolerates harder water). Excellent filtration and consistent water movement are important — wild specimens from Xingu populations are accustomed to highly oxygenated, clear water. Weekly water changes of 25–30% are recommended.
Decor should prioritise rocks and wood. Large, flat stones create resting and feeding surfaces; driftwood provides refuge and a modest dietary supplement as biofilm develops on its surface. Plants are largely safe but are not essential and will not be consumed aggressively. The species is nocturnal and will spend most of the day hidden; red-spectrum moonlighting allows observation without disturbing natural behaviour.
Compatibility is generally good. P. vittata is peaceful toward other species, including small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and livebearers. It should not be housed with other large, aggressive plecos in smaller tanks. Intraspecific territorial behaviour between males is manageable with sufficient territory definition.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia vittata as Least Concern in 2018, based on a wide Amazon basin distribution, no evidence of significant population decline, and tolerance of a range of water chemistries. The species is collected for the ornamental trade across its range and reaches European and North American markets regularly under the L015 designation.
The Xingu subpopulation warrants monitoring in the context of hydroelectric development on that river — the Belo Monte dam has dramatically altered flow regimes in portions of the Xingu's big bend, and rock-dwelling loricariids in those reaches may be affected by changes in substrate oxygenation and sedimentation. More broadly, the species' wide range and apparent ecological plasticity (it spans multiple river systems with quite different water chemistry) provide a meaningful buffer against local pressures. Captive breeding is well established in the hobby.
