Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria konopickyi was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1879. The valid name and authority have been confirmed against the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), with the parenthetical authority — (Steindachner, 1879) — indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus and later transferred to Rineloricaria.
Rineloricaria is one of the largest and most widespread genera of whiptail catfishes (subfamily Loricariinae), distributed across much of tropical South America. Its members share the long, slender, dorsoventrally flattened body and attenuated tail that give the group its common name.
The specific epithet konopickyi honours Eduard Konopicky (1841–1904), the scientific illustrator who prepared figures for Steindachner — a fitting reminder that nineteenth-century descriptive ichthyology depended as much on the draughtsman's hand as on the describer's pen.
Morphology
Rineloricaria konopickyi reaches a maximum recorded size of about 4 in standard length. The body is the classic whiptail form: elongate, depressed, and armoured with longitudinal rows of bony plates, narrowing to a long, thin caudal region. The mouth is ventral and forms a suckermouth disc used for clinging to substrate and grazing surfaces.
Fine diagnostic characters separating R. konopickyi from other Rineloricaria appear in the taxonomic literature, but living coloration and detailed sexual differences are not well described in the readily available sources. In Rineloricaria generally, breeding males develop conspicuous odontodes (bristle-like dermal spinelets) along the sides of the head, snout and pectoral spines; whether this is pronounced in R. konopickyi specifically is not confirmed in the consulted material, so it is noted as a genus-level pattern rather than asserted for this species.
Habitat
The species occurs in the Amazon River basin of South America. It is a tropical, freshwater, demersal fish — a bottom-dweller of river and stream substrates.
A notable physiological trait reported for the genus is facultative air-breathing: like several Loricariinae, Rineloricaria can supplement gill respiration by gulping air at the surface, an adaptation valuable in warm, oxygen-poor waters that occur seasonally in the Amazon lowlands. Specific measured water parameters (temperature, pH, hardness) for confirmed collection sites of R. konopickyi were not available in the consulted sources, so they are left unstated rather than estimated. Whiptails of this kind typically inhabit sand, silt or leaf-litter bottoms where their flattened bodies allow them to rest flush against the substrate.
Feeding

Such fish browse biofilm and aufwuchs from firm surfaces and sift fine organic detritus, algae and small invertebrates from soft substrate. Courtship and pairing behaviour have not been documented for Rineloricaria konopickyi. While several other Rineloricaria species are well known in the aquarium hobby and have observed mating routines — males preparing and defending a tube or crevice before spawning — there are no specific observations for this species. Breeding
There are no published breeding records for Rineloricaria konopickyi specifically. Clutch size, egg description, incubation and parental care are undocumented for this species. Many Rineloricaria are cave- or tube-spawners in which the male guards and fans the egg clutch, and several are bred readily in aquaria; but applying those details to R. konopickyi would be an unsupported assumption, so the honest position is that its breeding biology is unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Rineloricaria konopickyi is not a commonly identified aquarium fish, and no species-specific husbandry guidance has been published; reliable detailed care data are absent. It should not be confused with the several popular hobby whiptails of the same genus (such as the red whiptail forms), for which far more is documented.
General Rineloricaria husbandry — offered here only as context — favours mature, well-oxygenated water, gentle to moderate flow, a soft sand substrate that suits a flat-bodied bottom-dweller, and shelter in the form of tubes or wood. A varied diet of sinking vegetable-based foods, biofilm and occasional small live or frozen items typically suits the genus. None of this is specific to R. konopickyi, which remains a fish far better represented in museum collections than in aquaria.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria konopickyi as Data Deficient (DD), with the assessment dated 7 November 2018. A Data Deficient listing means there is not enough information on the species' distribution, population size or trends to make a meaningful judgement about its extinction risk — it is explicitly not a statement that the species is safe, but rather that it is too poorly known to evaluate.
No published threat or population data exist for the species. As a wide-ranging Amazon-basin fish, it may well prove secure once better surveyed, but it could equally harbour localized vulnerabilities that current knowledge cannot detect. The DD status is best read as a call for further field study rather than reassurance, and regional pressures on Amazon freshwaters — deforestation, sedimentation and hydrological change — remain relevant background concerns.
