Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria longicauda was described by Boeseman in 1971 based on material from Suriname. The species is placed in the genus Rineloricaria (family Loricariidae, subfamily Loricariinae), a large genus of whiptail catfishes distributed broadly across tropical and subtropical South America east of the Andes. The species epithet longicauda is straightforwardly descriptive, from the Latin longus (long) and cauda (tail), referencing the pronounced elongation of the caudal fin filaments in adults. The genus Rineloricaria is currently among the most species-rich genera in Loricariidae, and its internal taxonomy has undergone substantial revision; several species historically placed here have been moved to related genera or synonymised, but R. longicauda has been retained as a valid species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Its exact relationships within the genus have not been fully resolved by molecular phylogenetic analysis.
Morphology
R. longicauda shares the general body plan of the genus: an extremely depressed, elongated form encased dorsally and laterally in keeled bony scutes, with a broad flattened head, a ventral sucker mouth, and a greatly elongated caudal peduncle terminating in an attenuated tail. The upper caudal-fin lobe in mature adults bears extended filamentous rays that give the species its common and scientific names. Overall coloration is brownish to greyish, often with a pattern of darker blotches or saddles across the dorsal surface providing disruptive camouflage on the sandy or rocky riverbed. The eyes are placed high on the head, allowing upward vision while the fish rests on the substrate. Standard length reaches approximately 5.5–7 in in adults. Males develop conspicuous bristle-like odontodes along the snout and on the leading edges of the pectoral fins during the breeding season, a sexually dimorphic trait shared across the genus.
Habitat
R. longicauda is known from river systems draining the Guiana Shield in Suriname and potentially neighbouring Guyana and French Guiana. It occurs in both blackwater streams flowing over white sandy beds and in clearwater systems over rocky substrates. Water conditions in these highland-influenced Guiana Shield rivers tend to be soft (conductivity often below 50 µS/cm), acidic (pH 5.0–6.8), and clear to tea-coloured. Temperatures are relatively stable year-round in the range 73–82 °F (73–82 °F). R. longicauda is typically found in shallow, moderate-current stretches and at river margins where substrates are sandy or mixed sand-gravel with deposited leaf litter. It rests motionless on the substrate during daylight hours, relying on its cryptic coloration for concealment, and becomes more active after dark.
Feeding
Like other members of its genus, R. longicauda is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Its ventral mouth with enlarged fleshy lips is adapted for rasping diatom films, fine algae, and organic detritus from sandy substrates and submerged wood or rock surfaces. Gut content analyses from related species indicate that fine sediment, algae, diatoms, and detrital organic matter make up the bulk of ingested material. The species is not a wood digester; its teeth are bicuspid and not adapted for xylophagy. In aquaria it readily accepts spirulina-based sinking wafers, blanched vegetables such as cucumber and spinach, and fine-grain algae pellets. Periodic supplementation with small live or frozen invertebrate foods supports conditioning and overall health.
Mating
Specific field observations of mating behaviour in R. longicauda are not documented in the published literature. Based on well-studied congeners and the general loricariin reproductive pattern, males are expected to establish and defend nest cavities — beneath rocks, inside submerged hollow wood, or in similar sheltered microhabitats — and to court receptive females using tactile stimulation with their snout odontodes. The elongated caudal filaments may have a secondary role in visual signalling. Breeding is likely synchronised with seasonal flood-pulse cycles in the Guiana Shield rivers, with rising water levels and temperature shifts acting as environmental triggers. Intrasexual competition among males for high-quality nest sites is likely the primary driver of male odontode elaboration in this and related species.
Breeding
R. longicauda has been spawned in captivity, though detailed breeding reports specific to this species are sparse in the hobbyist literature. The general Rineloricaria breeding protocol applies: condition the pair on a varied high-quality diet for several weeks, then simulate the wet season by performing larger, slightly cooler water changes and raising temperature marginally. Provide clean PVC tubes or bamboo sections (internal diameter approximately 1.5–2 in) as spawning caves. The female deposits a cluster of adhesive eggs inside the tube, and the male remains to guard and fan them. Eggs are typically yellowish and hatch after 7–12 days depending on temperature. The male continues guarding larvae until yolk absorption is complete and fry begin to feed independently. First foods include powdered spirulina, infusoria, and microworm.
In the aquarium
R. longicauda is a suitable but rarely seen whiptail catfish for the specialist aquarist interested in Guiana Shield biotope setups or loricariid diversity. A minimum aquarium footprint of 80 × 15.5 in is recommended for a pair, with 25–30 US gal total volume. The substrate should be fine white or pale sand, matching the species' natural riverbed. Filtration should provide moderate water movement with excellent oxygenation. Because this species originates in soft, acidic blackwater, water chemistry should reflect this: pH 5.5–7.0, hardness 1–8 °dH, and temperature 73–82 °F (73–82 °F). Tannin-releasing driftwood, dried Indian almond leaves, and subdued lighting will reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Avoid boisterous or nippy tankmates; peaceful characins, small rasboras, or similarly soft-water catfishes make appropriate companions. Diet as per the genus: algae wafers and blanched vegetables as staple, supplemented with protein-rich foods two to three times weekly.
Conservation
R. longicauda has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The Guiana Shield rivers it inhabits — particularly those in Suriname — are among the least degraded river systems in South America, with extensive intact forest cover and relatively low human population pressure. However, gold mining (artisanal and industrial) is a growing threat across the Guiana Shield, introducing mercury, siltation, and physical disturbance to river channels. In Suriname specifically, illegal mining activity in interior river systems has expanded significantly in recent decades, causing localised habitat degradation that could affect specialist benthic species. Deforestation pressures on riparian zones and the spectre of future hydroelectric development in the region merit monitoring. The species is not targeted by fisheries or the ornamental fish trade in meaningful volume.
