Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria magdalenae was described by Franz Steindachner in 1879, making it one of the earliest whiptail loricariids formally named from the Caribbean-slope rivers of Colombia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Rineloricaria magdalenae with Steindachner as the sole authority.
The species belongs to subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail clade of Loricariidae — characterised by an extremely depressed, elongated body, a long filamentous caudal extension in adults, and males that guard eggs carried on or near the lower lip or substrate. Rineloricaria is a large, taxonomically complex genus distributed across most of South America east of the Andes, and several species remain in need of revision.
The specific epithet magdalenae is a feminine Latin genitive, meaning 'of the Magdalena', honouring the Río Magdalena — Colombia's great trans-Andean river that drains westward to the Caribbean Sea and serves as the type drainage for this species. The species has also been reported from the Sinú River basin and possibly the Catatumbo drainage (Lake Maracaibo system), both also Colombian Caribbean-slope systems.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 8 in standard length (SL). Like all Rineloricaria, the body is extremely flattened dorsoventrally and elongated, tapering to a long, whip-like caudal peduncle with an extended filament on the uppermost caudal ray. The entire dorsal surface is armoured with keeled bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows; the ventral surface is largely naked or covered with small platelets.
Ground coloration is brownish to greyish-tan with darker irregular blotching or a series of saddle-like bands across the back — effective camouflage against sandy or silty substrates covered in leaf litter. The snout is broadly rounded and the mouth is ventral, equipped with fine teeth for scraping biofilm and detritus from substrate surfaces.
Sexual dimorphism is most apparent during the reproductive season. Males develop conspicuous hypertrophied odontodes along the pectoral-fin spines, along the sides of the head, and sometimes along the dorsal surface — these bristles, absent or vestigial in females, function as a visual signal during mate assessment and as a tactile anchor during egg-guarding. Females tend to be broader across the midsection when gravid.
Habitat
Rineloricaria magdalenae inhabits the Sinú and Magdalena river basins of Colombia, both draining northwest to the Caribbean Sea. Typical lowland reaches of these systems are slow to moderately flowing, with sandy or muddy substrates, abundant leaf litter, submerged wood, and marginal aquatic vegetation. Seasonal flooding alternates between a high-water phase that spreads fish across floodplain swamps and marshes, and a dry season that concentrates them in main channels and oxbow lakes.
General water parameters for the lowland Magdalena basin are moderately hard and slightly alkaline — approximately pH 7.0–7.8 and 68–82 °F — though local conditions vary with substrate geology and vegetation density. Rineloricaria are facultative air-breathers: they can supplement gill respiration by gulping atmospheric air at the surface, which allows them to persist through the hypoxic conditions that develop in still backwaters and leaf-litter beds during the dry season. Microhabitat preference is strongly benthic — the fish rests motionless on bare substrate or under drifted leaf mats, relying on disruptive coloration rather than movement for concealment.
Feeding
Rineloricaria magdalenae is a benthic scraper and detritivore, using its ventrally positioned scraping mouth to rasp biofilm, algae, fine detritus, and organic sediment from substrate surfaces. Its trophic level (approximately 2.5) reflects a diet based primarily on plant-derived material and associated microorganisms rather than animal prey.
In the aquarium, the species does well on a varied diet of sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and spinach. Small amounts of protein — frozen bloodworms, daphnia, or micro-pellets — can supplement the diet but should not dominate it. Substrate foraging should be encouraged; a fine sand base that the fish can sift is preferable to coarse gravel.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in Rineloricaria follows the general whiptail pattern documented across the genus. Males establish loose territories around potential spawning sites — most often a hollow section of driftwood, a bamboo tube, or a sheltered crevice among roots or substrate debris. During the pre-spawning period, odontode development on the male accelerates markedly and he displays these bristles alongside rival males, sometimes engaging in lateral posturing or brief contact.
Females assess males by apparent territory quality and odontode elaboration. Once a female is receptive, courtship is brief: the pair orient alongside each other, the male positions himself over or beside the spawning site, and the female deposits eggs in or around the defended cavity. The male immediately takes over the clutch and the female plays no further role.
Breeding
Rineloricaria magdalenae is a paternal egg-guarder. After spawning, the male fans and tends the adhesive egg mass — laid on the interior surface of a tube, cave, or sheltered crevice — until hatching. Fanning behaviour maintains oxygen flow across the eggs and reduces fungal colonisation of infertile eggs.
Specific clutch size and incubation duration data for R. magdalenae from the published literature are not available; based on closely related congeners (e.g., R. lanceolata, R. parva), clutches of 20–60 eggs and incubation periods of 7–10 days at 77–81 °F are plausible estimates, but these figures remain to be confirmed for this species.
In the aquarium, breeding can be encouraged by providing multiple bamboo tubes or PVC sections of appropriate diameter, performing regular partial water changes, and conditioning adults on a nutritious and varied diet. Pairs should be given adequate space; if multiple males are present, territories must be delineated by physical structure.
In the aquarium
Rineloricaria magdalenae is an undemanding whiptail suited to a peaceful community aquarium of at least 39.5 in in length. The substrate should be fine sand — the species rests on the bottom and may sift the surface layer while foraging, and coarse gravel can abrade its ventral surface over time. Leaf litter (Indian almond, oak, or beech leaves) and sections of driftwood or bamboo tubes recreate the natural microhabitat and provide essential refuges.
Water temperature should be maintained between 22 and 82 °F with a pH of 6.8–7.8; the species is tolerant of moderate hardness. Good filtration and regular water changes are important — whiptails generate fine particulate waste and are sensitive to persistently elevated ammonia or nitrite. Current can be gentle; this is not a rapids-dwelling species.
The fish is cryptic and crepuscular, most active around dusk and dawn. It should not be kept with boisterous or large tankmates that would outcompete it for food or disturb its resting sites. Small to medium-sized peaceful tetras, Corydoras, small cichlids, and other Loricariinae make suitable companions. Multiple Rineloricaria can be kept together if the tank provides adequate territory.
As with all facultative air-breathers, a small gap between the water surface and the tank lid is advisable to allow access to atmospheric air without risk of the fish jumping clear.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria magdalenae as Least Concern (LC) in December 2020, consistent with its distribution across two substantial river systems in Colombia (Sinú and Magdalena) with no evidence of major population decline.
The Magdalena River basin is nonetheless one of the most heavily impacted freshwater systems in South America: catchment deforestation, agricultural runoff, artisanal gold mining, urban pollution, and large-scale damming have substantially altered the hydrology and sediment dynamics of many tributaries. Species dependent on intact riparian leaf litter and slow-water microhabitats may experience local contractions even when overall range remains broadly intact. Continued monitoring of Colombian lowland loricariids is warranted as infrastructure development expands into formerly isolated drainages.
