A small whiptail catfish from the Paraíba do Sul drainage of southeastern Brazil, Rineloricaria nigricauda has been known to science since 1904. Its species name alludes to the dark tail coloration, and a 2024 redescription formally clarified its boundaries from similar congeners sharing the same drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria nigricauda was originally described by Regan in 1904, with the type locality at Porto Real in the Paraíba do Sul River basin, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and ITIS both recognise the valid combination Rineloricaria nigricauda (Regan, 1904). The parenthetical authority indicates that Regan placed the species in a different genus at the time of original description; subsequent workers transferred it to Rineloricaria.

In 2024, Mejia and colleagues published a taxonomic revision in the Journal of Fish Biology addressing the species boundaries of Rineloricaria from the Paraíba do Sul drainage, concluding that the original 1904 description was inadequate for reliable species-level identification. Their work included a formal redescription of R. nigricauda and R. steindachneri, both from the same drainage, bringing greater clarity to a group of morphologically similar whiptails. This species belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae within the family Loricariidae.

Morphology

Rineloricaria nigricauda is a small species, reaching a maximum of 2.5 in standard length (SL) — considerably smaller than many of its congeners, including R. baliola from the far south. The body plan follows the characteristic Rineloricaria layout: strongly flattened ventrally, moderately elongated, tapering into a thread-like caudal filament. The skin is armoured with overlapping bony scutes.

The species name nigricauda — black tail — refers to the dark coloration of the caudal region, which serves as one of its more visible external features. Ground coloration in life is brownish, patterned with markings typical of the genus.

Mature males develop hypertrophied odontodes on the snout, cheeks, and pectoral-fin spines — a sexually dimorphic trait shared across the genus and reliably expressed in breeding-condition individuals. Females lack these pronounced bristles and may be slightly broader-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Rineloricaria nigricauda is known from coastal streams of Rio de Janeiro state and the Paraíba do Sul River basin, which spans the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo in southeastern Brazil. The Paraíba do Sul is a large Atlantic-draining river system, and the species appears to be associated with smaller tributary streams and coastal drainages within this zone rather than the main river channel itself.

Water parameters recorded for this species on FishBase indicate a pH range of 6.5–7.5, hardness up to 18 dH, and temperature of 73–81 °F — conditions consistent with the warm-subtropical to tropical climate of southeastern Brazil. The genus shows high habitat fidelity, with most species restricted to single drainage systems, and R. nigricauda appears to be no exception. The Paraíba do Sul drainage is characterised by a mix of clear and turbid streams with a range of substrate types; loricariids in this region typically favour rocky or sandy riffles with moderate current.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary studies for Rineloricaria nigricauda have been located in accessible literature. The genus as a whole is composed of algivores and detritivores: the ventrally positioned, subterminal mouth is adapted for grazing microalgae, periphyton, diatoms, and fine organic detritus from hard substrates. This feeding mode is reflected in the gut anatomy of Loricariinae generally, with a long, coiled intestine suited to processing plant and detrital material of low nutritional density.

In the aquarium, foods such as algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) are appropriate and generally accepted by the genus. Small invertebrate foods can be offered as an occasional supplement.

Mating

Species-specific courtship data for Rineloricaria nigricauda are not available in published literature. Rineloricaria as a genus is characterised by paternal spawning behaviour in which males compete for and defend cavity or substrate sites. The sexually dimorphic odontodes of mature males — hypertrophied bristles on the head, cheeks, and pectoral-fin spines — are used both in male-male territorial interactions and as signals during courtship.

At breeding condition, male R. nigricauda are distinguishable from females by these odontodes and by the generally smoother, broader profile of gravid females. Given the small adult size of this species (≤2.5 in SL), spawning territories and hiding sites would be proportionally modest in scale compared to the larger members of the genus.

Breeding

No captive-breeding records for Rineloricaria nigricauda are available in accessible hobbyist or scientific literature. Based on the reproductive biology documented for congeners, R. nigricauda is expected to be a substrate spawner with paternal egg-guarding: eggs are deposited on a prepared surface within a cavity or crevice, and the male fans the clutch and removes fungused or infertile eggs until hatching.

The small adult size of this species suggests that breeding attempts in captivity would require modest cave dimensions — small-bore PVC pipe, sections of bamboo, or tightly stacked slate pieces would be suitable. Conditioning on a varied, vegetable-forward diet and performing regular water changes with slight temperature variation to mimic seasonal cues are standard practices for triggering spawning in Rineloricaria species.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria nigricauda is not a widely traded species and carries no L-number or established aquarium trade name. Its small adult size — to approximately 2.5 in SL — makes it among the more manageable members of the genus for hobbyist tanks, requiring less space than large congeners. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in length with a fine sandy substrate, flat stones, and narrow tubes or crevice hides is appropriate for a small group.

Water conditions should reflect the southeastern Brazilian origin: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, hardness to around 18 dH. These are relatively accommodating parameters that overlap with many community aquarium fish from the same biogeographic zone. Good water flow and high oxygen levels are beneficial, as in all Loricariinae.

The species is presumed peaceful toward dissimilar species; intraspecific competition among males is possible and is managed by providing ample visual barriers and multiple hiding sites. Feeding is straightforward: algae wafers, spirulina products, blanched vegetables, and incidental small invertebrates form a suitable diet.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria nigricauda as Least Concern in 2018. At the time of that assessment, the species showed no documented evidence of significant population decline or range contraction.

The Paraíba do Sul drainage — the primary known range of this species — is one of the most heavily modified river basins in southeastern Brazil, flowing through densely populated and industrialised areas of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais states. Pressures include water diversion for urban supply, agricultural and industrial pollution, deforestation of gallery forests, and extensive river channelisation. These threats are real across the drainage, though their specific impact on R. nigricauda populations has not been formally assessed. The 2024 redescription by Mejia and colleagues, which clarified the species boundaries within this drainage, provides a stronger taxonomic foundation for future population-level monitoring.
