A slender whiptail from the middle Amazon basin, Rineloricaria phoxocephala is an unassuming but elegantly adapted loricariid whose flattened, torpedo-shaped body allows it to press tightly against substrate and woody debris in flowing water. Like others in the large and taxonomically complex Rineloricaria genus, it rewards keepers who replicate the soft, warm Amazonian conditions it evolved in.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria phoxocephala was formally described by Charles Henry Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889 in the Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences (Series 2, volume 2, page 37), based on specimens collected at Coari (written at the time as 'Coary'), a town on the Solimões River in Amazonas state, Brazil. That locality places the type series squarely in the middle Amazon drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Rineloricaria phoxocephala as the valid combination; it has been placed at various times in Hemiloricaria and Loricaria, both now treated as junior synonyms of Rineloricaria under contemporary usage.

Rineloricaria is the largest genus of subfamily Loricariinae, comprising more than 60 recognised species distributed across much of South America east of the Andes. The genus name combines the Greek rhinos (nose) with the Latin lorica (cuirass or leather corslet), alluding to the genus's strongly armoured snout region. The species epithet phoxocephala derives from the Greek phoxos (tapered, wedge-shaped) and kephalē (head), describing the characteristically pointed, dorsoventrally compressed head profile seen in this species.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 6 in standard length (SL), making R. phoxocephala a mid-sized member of the genus. The body is markedly elongate and strongly depressed — essentially flattened top to bottom — with a broad, spatulate head that narrows sharply toward the snout tip. The entire dorsal surface is covered in overlapping keeled scutes arranged in longitudinal series, providing armour across the head, body, and the base of the caudal peduncle. The ventral surface is less heavily plated, with soft skin exposed along the central belly.

Coloration is typically a pale tan to sandy brown ground colour with irregular darker brown blotches or cross-bars across the dorsum and sides; the exact pattern varies between individuals and may intensify or fade with stress and condition. The caudal fin often shows faint banding. The mouth is inferior and disc-like, adapted for clinging to and rasping surfaces in current.

Sexual dimorphism follows the typical Loricariinae pattern. Breeding males develop conspicuous hypertrophied odontodes (enlarged denticles) on the sides of the head, along the snout, and along the pectoral fin spines — often called bristles or cheek spines in aquarium literature. These odontodes are absent or barely developed in females and juveniles. Males also tend to develop a slightly broader, flatter head profile than females of similar body length.

Habitat

The type locality at Coari on the Solimões (the Brazilian name for the upper Amazon) represents a broad, slow-moving tropical lowland river. The middle Amazon and its associated backwaters, flooded forests, and tributary streams in this region are characterised by warm, soft, slightly acidic water reflecting the weathered substrates of the surrounding Amazonian sedimentary lowlands. Water temperatures in these systems typically range from roughly 79–86 °F through the year, with soft, low-conductivity conditions predominant.

Like others in Rineloricaria, R. phoxocephala is a demersal, bottom-associated species. In the Amazon region it is associated with sandy or silty substrates, submerged leaf litter, and woody debris — the accumulated organic matter that forms a structurally complex microhabitat for small loricariids. Facultative air-breathing has been documented for the Rineloricaria genus (FishBase Ref. 126274), a trait that confers tolerance of periods of reduced dissolved oxygen such as occur in stagnant backwaters during the dry season.

Feeding

Rineloricaria phoxocephala is a grazing detritivore and biofilm feeder in the wild, using its inferior mouth to rasp fine organic material, algae, diatoms, and associated microorganisms from surfaces including sand, submerged wood, and leaf litter. This feeding strategy is typical across Loricariinae; the fine teeth are adapted for scraping rather than gouging hard wood in the manner of the wood-eating Panaqolus or Panaque genera.

In the aquarium, the diet is straightforward to replicate. Sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based tablets form a reliable staple. Blanched vegetables — courgette, cucumber, spinach, and sweet potato — are accepted and provide variety. Small amounts of protein in the form of live or frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, or sinking carnivore pellets can be offered occasionally. Ample leaf litter (Indian almond, oak, or beech leaves) in the tank provides both grazing surface and tannin chemistry consistent with its natural environment.

Mating

Courtship behaviour in Rineloricaria whiptails is driven primarily by male competition and territory over potential spawning sites. Males develop their prominent odontodes as secondary sexual characters, and these play a role in rival assessment and possibly in stimulating females. A sexually active male will stake out a preferred substrate location — a length of PVC tube, a bamboo section, a tight crevice between rocks, or a sheltered area beneath driftwood — and will patrol and defend it against competing males.

Conditioned females, recognisable by their fuller body shape and relatively smooth cheeks, are courted into the defended site by the male. Males may display by positioning themselves at the entrance to the spawning cavity, exposing their hypertrophied odontodes. Overstocking males in a confined space leads to chronic stress and physical injury from odontode abrasion; one male per tank, or a well-structured tank providing clear territory boundaries, is advisable.

Breeding

Rineloricaria species are cavity or substrate spawners and among the more accessible loricariids to breed in captivity given appropriate conditions. Spawning in R. phoxocephala specifically has not been formally reported in the hobbyist literature, but the breeding biology of close congeners is well documented and likely applicable.

The male guards the spawning site, and following spawning he takes sole responsibility for egg care: fanning the adhesive eggs with his pectoral and tail fins to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile eggs. Eggs hatch within approximately 7–10 days at tropical temperatures. Fry are initially sustained by their yolk sac and begin actively grazing shortly after. Maintaining clean water, providing spawning tubes or similar cavities of appropriate diameter, and conditioning adults on a varied diet are the standard prerequisites for inducing spawning attempts.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria phoxocephala is a manageable aquarium fish for intermediate keepers comfortable providing the soft, warm, well-filtered conditions of the middle Amazon. Its adult size of 6 in SL makes it suitable for tanks from roughly 25 US gal upward, though a larger footprint is preferable given its active substrate-patrolling behaviour.

Water chemistry should reflect its Amazonian origins: temperature 77–86 °F, soft to moderately soft water (general hardness below 12 °dGH), and a slightly acidic to neutral pH in the range of 6.0–7.2. The species shows no tolerance for ammonia or nitrite and appreciates efficient biological filtration and regular partial water changes. Tannin-stained water from driftwood or leaf litter is entirely appropriate and may reduce stress.

Substrate should be fine sand or fine gravel to accommodate the species' demersal habits, with ample cover in the form of driftwood, PVC tubes, or sections of bamboo of suitable diameter. The fish spend much of their time stationary, pressed against surfaces; without adequate cover they remain chronically stressed. Plants are compatible if the substrate is kept soft enough for the fish to rest on.

R. phoxocephala is peaceful toward most tankmates. Avoid combining it with aggressive bottom-dwellers competing for the same substrate territory. Peaceful mid-water tetras, small rasboras, hatchetfish, and Corydoras are all compatible. Multiple individuals can be kept together in a suitably sized aquarium if sufficient hiding and spawning sites are provided; male-male conflicts are usually low-level and non-lethal.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria phoxocephala as Least Concern in November 2018, noting a wide distribution across the Amazon River basin with no major identified threats to the species at that time. The broad geographic range of the middle and upper Amazon drainage, combined with the lack of evidence for significant population decline, supports this assessment.

The Amazon basin faces ongoing large-scale pressures including deforestation and associated sedimentation, changing hydrological regimes, agricultural expansion, and the expanding footprint of hydroelectric infrastructure. For a benthic species dependent on structurally complex substrates and clean, well-oxygenated water, significant habitat degradation could affect local populations. However, no range-wide concern has been identified for this species at present.
