Apistogramma paucisquamis is a tiny dwarf cichlid of the Rio Negro, the Amazon's great blackwater tributary, where it lives in the leaf litter of tea-stained shallows often no deeper than your hand. Sven Kullander and Wolfgang Staeck described it in 1988 and gave it a name meaning "few scales" — a nod to the one trait that sets it apart from every other Apistogramma: just twelve scale rows circle the tail base instead of the usual sixteen. Mature males add an oversized, thick-lipped mouth and a lyre-shaped tail, features the describers tied to an unusual open-mouthed threat display. Hobbyists knew the fish by reputation long before science named it, and it remains a connoisseur's species rather than a beginner's. It reaches the trade almost entirely as wild-caught stock and demands the soft, acidic blackwater it came from — go in clear-eyed.

Taxonomy & naming

Sven O. Kullander and Wolfgang Staeck formally described Apistogramma paucisquamis in 1988, in the French journal Cybium (vol. 12, no. 3, pp. 189–201), from 96 specimens of 0.5–1 in standard length taken in the middle and lower Rio Negro of Amazonas State, Brazil. The holotype is an adult male of 1 in SL, registered as MZUSP 36952 in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo; Staeck collected it on 27 March 1986 in a small, shallow bay on the right bank of the Rio Negro within the Anavilhanas archipelago. Paratypes are split among MZUSP, the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM), the Smithsonian (USNM 289281), and the Koenig museum in Bonn (ZFMK). A date of "1990" sometimes circulates for this species, but it is an error — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, and the Cichlid Room Companion all fix the description at 1988.

The genus name joins the Greek apisto (uncertain) and gramma (line or graphic mark), a reference — never fully resolved — either to the broken lateral line typical of the genus or to its variable markings. The epithet is plainer: the Latin paucus (few) and squama (scale), for the reduced scaling around the caudal peduncle. That is the diagnostic character, and a genuinely unusual one. Apistogramma paucisquamis has only 12 circumpeduncular scale rows where essentially all other Apistogramma have 16, and Kullander and Staeck noted that in cichlids such a reduction is otherwise tied to small, slender, current-loving bodies.

German aquarists knew the fish well before 1988, calling it the "Glanzbinden-Apistogramma" — roughly, "shining-band dwarf cichlid." It seems to have reached the trade in the 1960s, and one specimen was even swept into the paratype series of Apistogramma gibbiceps by Meinken in 1969. On the strength of its open-mouthed threat behavior, Kullander and Staeck placed it provisionally near the Apistogramma agassizii and Apistogramma cacatuoides groups, while cautioning that its exact relationships could not be resolved. Later molecular work on the genus (Tougard et al. 2017) has continued to reshuffle Apistogramma into species groups, but this distinctive little fish still sits in an imperfectly settled spot. The Brazilian Red List assessment records no synonyms — the name has stood unchallenged since it was coined.

Morphology

This is small even by dwarf-cichlid standards. The type series tops out near 1 in standard length, FishBase lists a maximum of 1.5 in SL, and hobbyists generally report mature males around 2 in (2 in) total length with females a touch smaller, near 1.6 in (1.5 in). The body is elongate and laterally compressed, grey-brown across the flanks and paler below.

Two dark horizontal bands run the length of the body and define the pattern: a sharp-edged upper band that carries a rounded black lateral spot and continues onto the tail base, and a fainter, broader lower band running from the pectoral base toward the caudal fin, with a pale zone between them. This twin-stripe look recalls the related Apistogramma bitaeniata. Males are the showy sex — bright blue dots stipple the lower head, narrow metallic blue-green lines border the dark stripes (the "shining band" of the old German name), and the fins carry rows of maroon-to-red and clear spots. The caudal fin is the giveaway: lyre-shaped, its streamers formed by the upper and lower rays (D3 and V3) rather than the marginal rays seen in most congeners, and crossed by vertical bars. Males also grow notably thick lips and elongated jaws — a strong positive size allometry the describers found shared only with the Apistogramma cacatuoides group.

Male color is famously variable. As early as 1981 Schmettkamp distinguished a "white" form (yellowish chest, white pelvic filament) from an "orange" form (whitish chest, orange-to-reddish caudal and anal fins), but Kullander and Staeck read these as extremes of individual red-pigment expression rather than distinct populations, since intermediates turn up side by side. Sexual dimorphism is clear in mature fish: males are larger, more intensely colored, and carry the lyre tail, thick lips, and pelvic filaments, while females are plainer, developing the black-marked pelvic fins, dark midventral line, and contrasting white genital papilla typical of a breeding Apistogramma female.

Habitat

Apistogramma paucisquamis is endemic to the Rio Negro drainage of the Brazilian Amazon, recorded from the middle and lower river between the Rio Daraã and the Anavilhanas archipelago near Novo Airão, and more broadly between Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Manaus. It is a fish of the Amazon's largest blackwater tributary rather than the wider basin, and its biology is inseparable from that water type. Old collection records from Suriname and the Brazilian state of Amapá are treated by the IUCN assessors as probably erroneous, so the species is best read as a Rio Negro endemic.

The Rio Negro runs the color of strong tea — stained dark by dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from the surrounding forest, nearly sterile of minerals, and strikingly acidic. The single in-situ reading Staeck took at a collecting site was 79 °F (79 °F), total and carbonate hardness both below 1 °dH, and a pH of 4.3, figures that would be lethal to most freshwater fish and that show just how specialized this cichlid's chemistry tolerance is. Within that blackwater it lives at the extreme margins. FishBase records a depth range of roughly 0–3 ft, but in practice the fish favors water only 4–15.5 in deep, threading through the thick carpet of dead leaves that blankets the banks. The describers found a clear correlation between the gentleness of the bottom's slope and the fish's abundance: where shallow water extended a meter or more from shore, densities reached about one fish per meter of shoreline, and where the bottom dropped away quickly the species was scarce. This is not a creek specialist confined to small waters but a shallow-margin specialist that lines the main river arms wherever leaf litter and a gentle gradient coincide. East of Barcelos it can occur alongside the similar Apistogramma mendezi.

Feeding

The leaf litter is everything to this fish — cover, hunting ground, and, in the absence of stones, the only surface for laying eggs. Kullander and Staeck described Apistogramma paucisquamis leading "a very furtive life" in the spaces under and among the dead leaves.

What little we know of its diet comes from gut analysis of three males in the type series, and it points to a micro-invertebrate hunter rather than a vegetarian. The chief identifiable food was the shells of cladocerans (water fleas); individual fish also held water mites, copepods, nematodes, leeches, fragments of terrestrial and aquatic insects, plant matter, and diatoms. FishBase places its trophic level around 3.2 — that of a small carnivore taking a varied diet of tiny animals, matching the omnivore-with-carnivorous-leanings the hobby reports.

The describers raised an intriguing puzzle around the male's outsized mouth and wide branchiostegal membrane. One reading is feeding: a large mouth and big orobranchial cavity make for efficient suction feeding on very small prey, perhaps even zooplankton. But they noted that the jaw teeth of large males are specialized — widely spaced, strongly recurved canines suited to a fish that grips or collects prey rather than vacuuming it up — and that the big mouth also correlates with the species' open-mouthed frontal threat display. They could not decide which pressure shaped the head and flagged it as an open question worth further study. It remains one.

Mating

Like its relatives, Apistogramma paucisquamis is a substrate-brooding cichlid with female-dominated parental care, typically living as a pair or as a one-male, several-female harem in which each female holds a small territory inside the male's larger one. Its most distinctive social trait is a frontal threat display: where most Apistogramma face down rivals with the mouth shut, this species — along with the agassizii and cacatuoides groups — gapes the mouth wide and flares the branchiostegal membrane, sharply enlarging the apparent size of the head. The male's thickened lips and elongated jaws only exaggerate the bluff.

Pair formation follows the genus template. A ripe female colors up, blackening her pelvic fins, darkening the midventral line, and signaling with the white genital papilla, while the male displays and patrols to hold the wider territory. In aquaria, wild-caught pairs are reported settling into the usual cave-cleaning and pit-digging courtship before a female commits to a clutch. Crowding is the usual flashpoint — keepers consistently warn that males turn rough on females during spawning when space is short, so a settled harem needs real room and visual breaks. As is typical for the genus, the female chooses the spawning site and leads the close-range care while the male defends the perimeter.

Breeding

Apistogramma paucisquamis is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with harem polygyny, and it has a reputation for being difficult to breed. Eggs are attached to the ceiling of a cave or, lacking stone, to the undersides of submerged leaves — FishBase explicitly records cave-ceiling egg attachment with the female caring for eggs and larvae. The female tends and fans the clutch and guards the wrigglers and free-swimming fry within her small territory while the male patrols the larger one. Clutch size has not been precisely published for this species; for the genus, dwarf-cichlid harem spawners of this size typically lay on the order of a few dozen up to perhaps 80–100 eggs per clutch, and that range is the best available expectation here — a genus-typical inference, not a measured figure for Apistogramma paucisquamis.

Hobbyist accounts fill in the broad strokes. Long-time breeders on the apistogramma.com forum describe wild-caught pairs going through normal cave-cleaning courtship but report how challenging spawning proves, with several keepers noting few confirmed successes; its demands are often compared to the similarly difficult Apistogramma mendezi. The consistent message across independent keepers is that breeding hinges on getting the water right: very soft, very acidic conditions (roughly pH 4.5–5.5), low conductivity, and warmth near 79 °F (79 °F) — which simply mirrors the blackwater the fish came from. The anecdotes are a guide rather than gospel, but the convergence on "soft, acidic, and patient" is strong, and it matches the extreme field chemistry Staeck measured at the type locality.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma paucisquamis is a specialist's fish in the fullest sense, and anyone keeping it should go in clear-eyed. It is rare in the trade; when it does appear it arrives almost exclusively as wild-caught stock from the Rio Negro ornamental fishery rather than as captive-bred fish, and it is seldom kept, let alone bred successfully. That obscurity is earned — the fish demands water conditions most general-purpose setups cannot provide. Treat it as a blackwater purist and plan accordingly.

Water: the chemistry is the non-negotiable. At the type locality Staeck measured pH 4.3, total hardness below 1 °dH, and 79 °F — essentially mineral-free, highly acidic, warm water. For mere maintenance, aim for a pH in the 4.5–6.0 range and very soft water (under 5 °dH, ideally under 2 °dH); for any prospect of breeding, the closer to those type-locality extremes the better. Ordinary tap water is unsuitable without treatment unless your municipality happens to supply RO-quality soft water. The practical path is reverse-osmosis water remineralized only enough to sustain the fish, supplemented with catappa (Indian almond) leaves, driftwood, and alder cones to add tannins and drive the pH down. The blackwater stain those botanicals produce is not merely decorative — it signals the chemistry the fish expects, and their humic compounds have real antimicrobial effects on stressed, recently imported wild fish.

Tank: don't skimp on footprint. A single pair works in a tank around 23.5–27.5 in long, but a harem of one male with two or three females — how this fish naturally organizes itself — needs at least 35.5–39.5 in of length so each female gets a defensible zone and the male can move between them without constant conflict. Lay a thin bed of fine, pale sand and cover the floor heavily in dried leaf litter (catappa, beech, or oak leaves, rinsed and left to soften), with driftwood, twisted roots, or dried branches for overhead cover. This species lives within a few centimetres of the bottom and under leaves; an open, sparsely furnished tank will keep it alive but stressed and invisible. Floating plants or dense surface cover to dim the light complete the biotope.

Tankmates: choose with care, and lean toward nothing at all on the bottom. Other Rio Negro species are the natural match — small, peaceful tetras such as rummy-noses or similar soft-water characins make unobtrusive dithers that keep the cichlids visible without competing for territory. Bottom-dwellers are the most common mistake: Corydoras, even small ones, blunder through a spawning female's leaf pile and get attacked, which costs the cichlid energy and stress for no benefit to either fish. Larger cichlids, fast-moving barbs, or anything that disturbs the leaf litter or competes for caves is unsuitable — this fish is small and retiring, and can be overwhelmed by robust tankmates even without outright aggression.

Common mistakes: sexing adults is easy once the male has colored up — his lyre tail, thick lips, metallic flank markings, and larger size make him unmistakable — but juveniles can be uniform and hard to sex until five or six months old. The recurring errors, generalized from easier Apistogramma, are introducing a pair to a community tank too soon and expecting spawning in water that is soft but not acidic enough. Breeding accounts on apistogramma.com are few and frank: those who succeed typically hold pH between 4.5 and 5.5, keep conductivity below 50 µS/cm, and measure patience in months of conditioning. For a hobbyist willing to commit to those conditions and to a species-only or near-species-only setup, Apistogramma paucisquamis is a genuinely rewarding fish from one of the world's most distinctive freshwater environments.

Conservation

On the IUCN Red List, Apistogramma paucisquamis is Data Deficient (DD) — a global assessment by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), dated 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. That category is an admission of uncertainty, not alarm: there is not enough information on the species' population size and trend to judge its extinction risk, and the assessors explicitly call it infrequent and not abundant, with population status unknown. It is not listed by CITES, and FishBase rates its intrinsic vulnerability to fishing as low (10 of 100). The one threat the assessors flag is specific — collection for the international ornamental-fish trade. Because the Rio Negro is a low-productivity, mineral-poor environment, they reason that even modest collecting could matter, and they cite signs of local declines that cannot yet be quantified, hence a call for monitoring rather than a finished verdict.

The wider context is the Rio Negro itself, the Amazon's principal blackwater river. For the fishes of its margins the relevant pressures are habitat-level: deforestation in the catchment, expanding agriculture, gold mining and the mercury contamination that follows it, hydroelectric development, and the broad climatic and hydrological shifts now reshaping Amazonian freshwaters (see, e.g., Alho, Reis & Aquino 2015 on basin-wide ecosystem disruption). A shallow leaf-litter specialist that depends on gently sloping, litter-covered banks in soft, acidic water is exposed, in principle, to anything that strips the forest fringe, alters the river's chemistry, or changes its flood pulse — even if no one is collecting the fish in quantity. There is a hopeful wrinkle: the Rio Negro's ornamental fishery is one of the better-studied examples of trade-driven conservation. Project Piaba, working in the region since 1991, argues that a sustainable home-aquarium fishery gives riverside communities an economic stake in keeping the forest and its waters intact — the "buy a fish, save a tree" logic. The honest summary is narrow: the species' own global status is simply unknown, the trade in it is small, and the real long-term question is the health of the Rio Negro's blackwater shallows it cannot live without.

For the keeper, the practical corollary is that this is a specialist's fish and not the dwarf cichlid to cut your teeth on. It reaches the trade almost entirely as wild-caught stock, so it arrives expecting the Rio Negro: clean, low-bacteria, very soft and acidic water over fine sand, with a deep layer of leaf litter and ample cover from wood and shade-tolerant plants or moss. For maintenance, cleanliness matters more than exact hardness and pH; for any hope of breeding, the water needs to be genuinely extreme — mineral-poor and acidic well below pH 6, driven by rainwater or RO, botanicals, and tannins. Give a harem real space (a tank around 40 in / 39.5 in long for one male and a few females, more for multiple harems), hold temperature in the mid-to-upper 70s °F (around 75–82 °F), and shield this tiny, retiring fish from larger or boisterous tankmates. And one recurring caution from keepers: bottom-dwelling companions such as Corydoras can blunder through a spawning Apistogramma's territory and get punished for it, so choose floor-sharing tankmates with care.
