Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Petrotilapia pyroscelos is a rock-dwelling mbuna endemic to Lake Malawi, described in 2011 from the waters around Chizumulu Island. Like all Petrotilapia it is a thick-lipped, tricuspid-toothed aufwuchs grazer that combs the algal felt from sunlit rock, but it carries a vivid signature: breeding males have pelvic fins the color of fire, the trait that gave the species its name (Greek for 'fire leg'). A dark submarginal band running through the dorsal fin of both sexes — absent in several of its closest relatives — is the other reliable key to telling it apart in a genus where look-alike species are separated chiefly by the live coloration of their males.

Taxonomy & naming

Petrotilapia pyroscelos was described in 2011 by Maxon Lundeba, Jay R. Stauffer Jr. and Adrianus F. Konings, in 'Five new species of the genus Petrotilapia (Teleostei: Cichlidae), from Lake Malawi, Africa' (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 22(2):149–168). The holotype (PSU 4753) and paratype lots were collected at Mkanila Bay, in the Same Bay area of Chizumulu Island, at roughly 12°0.57′S, 34°36.9′E. The Catalog of Fishes treats pyroscelos as a valid species with no junior synonyms, and FishBase and the IUCN follow suit.

The genus Petrotilapia was erected by Trewavas in 1935 and is diagnosed by its predominantly tricuspid oral teeth, which, with the broad fleshy lips, make the genus instantly recognizable among the mbuna — the Chichewa name for the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Malawi. The generic name joins Greek petra, 'rock,' to the cichlid genus name Tilapia: a 'rock tilapia.' The specific epithet pyroscelos is a noun in apposition from Greek pýros, 'fire,' and skélos, 'leg,' referring to the fire-colored pelvic fins of males. Because Petrotilapia species diverge chiefly in the nuptial coloration of breeding males and overlap heavily in body measurements and meristics, color is the practical key to identification — and pyroscelos is distinguished from its relatives by a combination of the fiery pelvics, a dark submarginal band in the dorsal fin, and the specific palette of male and female ground colors.

Morphology

Petrotilapia pyroscelos is a substantial mbuna, reaching about 4 in standard length. It carries the unmistakable Petrotilapia equipment: broad, fleshy lips packed with long, slender, flexible tricuspid teeth in many rows, a built-in comb for stripping algae from rock. Fin counts run to 17–19 dorsal spines with 8–10 soft rays, three anal spines and 7–8 anal rays.

Coloration is status- and sex-linked, as throughout the genus, and supplies the diagnosis. Males have a blue-and-bronze ground color crossed by seven to nine gray vertical bars, a whitish-to-gray throat and a purple cheek — and, most distinctively, pelvic fins the color of fire that name the species. Females are brown with faint blue and yellow highlights. A conspicuous dark submarginal band runs through the spinous part of the dorsal fin in both sexes: this band is the trait that separates pyroscelos from Petrotilapia tridentiger, Petrotilapia xanthos, Petrotilapia flaviventris and Petrotilapia palingnathos, which lack it. The male's blue-bronze body, purple cheek and pale throat further distinguish it from the dull-gray, orange-cheeked, black-throated males of Petrotilapia genalutea, the blue-black, dark-cheeked males of Petrotilapia nigra and Petrotilapia chrysos, the bright-blue, light-cheeked males of Petrotilapia microgalana, and the blue, light-cheeked males of Petrotilapia mumboensis.

Habitat

Petrotilapia pyroscelos is endemic to Lake Malawi (also called Niassa or Nyasa), the rift lake this site is really about, and is known from the central-lake region around Chizumulu Island, including Mkanila Bay and the Same Bay area. As a Petrotilapia it is a fish of the rocky and intermediate zones, where the algal-coated boulders supply both its food and its breeding territories.

Its environment is the warm, hard, alkaline water typical of Malawi's rocky coasts — broadly 73–82 °F (73–82 °F), pH around 7.7–8.8, and high carbonate hardness, the stable rift-lake chemistry shared by the whole rocky-shore mbuna community. FishBase characterizes the species' setting within the lake's tropical 12–13°S band. As with its congeners, its world is a stretch of rocky shoreline rather than the open lake, and its restriction to the Chizumulu area makes it a localized central-lake endemic — a pattern that lets many closely related Petrotilapia coexist around the lake while each occupies its own rocky range.

Feeding

Petrotilapia pyroscelos is an aufwuchs grazer — 'aufwuchs' being the German term mbuna keepers use for the felt of attached algae, diatoms and small invertebrates that coats sunlit rock. Like its congeners it uses a dense comb of slender tricuspid teeth to rake loose algal filaments and the tiny animals living among them, scraping the film from the rocks over which it lives and leaving cleaned patches behind.

FishBase places pyroscelos at a trophic level of about 3.3 — a grazing omnivore rather than a strict herbivore — consistent with the genus's habit of combing the algal film while also taking the diatoms, loose algal strands and small invertebrates embedded in the aufwuchs matrix. This flexible rock-grazing strategy is what allows several Petrotilapia and other mbuna to share a single rocky shore, partitioning the habitat by depth, exposure and feeding posture rather than competing head-on for the same patch of algal film.

Mating

Like the rest of the Malawi mbuna, Petrotilapia pyroscelos is a polygynous, territorial breeder in which only some males hold breeding territories at any time. A territorial male assumes his nuptial dress — the blue-bronze body, purple cheek and fire-colored pelvic fins — establishes and defends a patch of rock, and displays from it to passing females while driving off rival males; non-territorial males and females live less tethered lives, drifting and shoaling over the rocks. A ripe female moves through this loose crowd to a holding male's territory to spawn.

No dedicated courtship study has been published for pyroscelos, but the pattern is consistent across Petrotilapia and the mbuna generally: the male's nuptial coloration — here the conspicuous fiery pelvics — and the female's choice of partner do much of the work of keeping the species reproductively distinct from sympatric, look-alike congeners. On a shoreline where several Petrotilapia overlap, this assortative mating by male color is the mechanism that holds otherwise near-identical species apart.

Breeding

Petrotilapia pyroscelos is a maternal mouthbrooder, like all Lake Malawi mbuna. The pair bond lasts only as long as spawning: the male displays over his territory, the female lays her eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth, fertilization follows in the usual mouthbrooder fashion, and she then incubates the clutch for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. There is no paternal or biparental care — the female alone broods the eggs and larvae, and after release the fry shelter near the rocks and begin grazing aufwuchs.

Clutch sizes have not been documented specifically for pyroscelos, but they fall in the range expected of a large mbuna of this body size: on the order of a few dozen comparatively large, yolk-rich eggs. This is the low-fecundity, high-investment strategy characteristic of mouthbrooders, in which egg number is traded for the protection of oral incubation. The female may briefly take threatened fry back into her mouth in the first days after release before the brood disperses over the rocks.

In the aquarium

Petrotilapia pyroscelos is rarely seen in the hobby. As a recently described, central-lake endemic from the Chizumulu area it is an uncommon export, and like other large Petrotilapia it has never been a mainstream mbuna; what keeping experience exists is largely extrapolated from the genus, so the notes below should be read in that light.

As one of the larger mbuna, pyroscelos needs a footprint-driven setup — a long tank with abundant rockwork to provide grazing surfaces, territories and broken sightlines, on the order of the 130 US gal-plus tanks experienced keepers recommend for the genus. Match the wild chemistry: hard, alkaline water around pH 7.8–8.4 and warm tropical temperatures. Feed it as the herbivore-leaning grazer it is, with algae- and spirulina-based foods; keepers of this feeding guild warn against rich, soft protein foods such as bloodworms or adult brine shrimp, which Petrotilapia digest poorly and which invite bloat. Temperament-wise, Petrotilapia are comparatively even-tempered for their size but run hottest male-to-male within the species, so keep a single male with several females and ample shelter. As with the whole genus, keep only one Petrotilapia species per tank — they hybridize readily among their look-alike members — and a recently described, narrow-range endemic like pyroscelos is exactly the kind of fish whose genetic integrity is worth protecting in captivity. A brooding female can be moved out until she releases her fry.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Petrotilapia pyroscelos as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018). The rating reflects the absence of evidence of decline rather than a broad or secure range — this is a fish known from the rocky shores around Chizumulu Island, one of the more localized members of an already localized genus. A narrow range is itself a latent vulnerability, because any degradation of those few kilometres of rocky shoreline affects much of the population. The species is of no importance to subsistence fishers and faces no CITES or directed-fishery pressure of its own.

The honest framing is that a 'Least Concern' island endemic can still live in a strained lake. The basin-scale review by Chavula and colleagues (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241) documents mounting anthropogenic and climatic stress across Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa: heavy over-fishing, rising sediment and nutrient loading washing off deforested catchments, an estimated warming of roughly 33 °F in the shallow water column that strengthens stratification and reduces productivity, and the looming risk of invasive species. For a rocky-shore grazer like pyroscelos, sedimentation is the most direct threat — silt smothers the algal film it combs and clouds the clear water its breeding displays depend on — and that threat is amplified, not diluted, by the species' confinement to a small central-lake area.
