Bryconamericus macarenae is a small characid minnow endemic to the Güejar River basin within the Macarena Mountain range of the Colombian Llanos — a rugged, biodiverse corridor where the eastern Andes descend toward the Orinoco system. Reaching no more than 2 in standard length, it occupies benthopelagic positions over sandy substrates in the mainstream and tributaries of its restricted range, and was formally described in 2010 by Román-Valencia, García-Alzate, Ruiz-C. and Taphorn. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2021.

Taxonomy & naming

Bryconamericus macarenae was described in 2010 by Cesar Román-Valencia, Carlos A. García-Alzate, Raquel Ivveth Ruiz-C., and Donald Charles Taphorn, with the type locality designated as the Macarena Mountain range in Colombia. The description was published in Animal Biodiversity and Conservation 33(2):195–203. The species belongs to the genus Bryconamericus, a speciose Neotropical characid genus that ranges broadly across South American river basins; it is placed in the family Characidae under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

The epithet macarenae is a toponym derived from the Sierra de La Macarena — the isolated mountain range in the department of Meta, Colombia, where the type locality lies. The Sierra de La Macarena is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of Colombia's national parks, recognised for its exceptional biodiversity as a convergence zone between the Andes, the Amazon basin, and the Llanos Orientales. Within that landscape the Güejar River drains westward into the Orinoco system through the Meta River.

Within Bryconamericus the species is distinguished from congeners by a combination of meristic characters. The genus as a whole is taxonomically complex and subject to ongoing revision; molecular and morphological studies continue to clarify species limits and relationships among the many small-bodied Neotropical characids that share its grade of organisation.

Morphology

Bryconamericus macarenae is a slender, silvery characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like most Bryconamericus species it has the typical characid body plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform trunk, a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin behind the dorsal, and the family's characteristic toothless premaxilla arrangement combined with a small terminal mouth.

Pigmentation is that of a generalised Neotropical stream characin: a silvery to pale-yellow body with a diffuse, narrow dark lateral stripe running from behind the operculum to the base of the caudal fin, and a dark caudal peduncle spot that is common across the genus. There is no pronounced sexual dimorphism reported in the available literature, and the species lacks the elaborate coloration that characterises some larger characid relatives. Fin counts and other meristic data were published in the original description by Román-Valencia and colleagues.

Habitat

The species is known from the Güejar River basin in the Macarena Mountain range, which forms part of the upper Orinoco drainage in the department of Meta, Colombia. It is benthopelagic in habits, recorded from the mainstream channel and its tributaries over sandy substrates with flowing water. The Güejar and its tributaries in this reach descend from the foothills of the Sierra de La Macarena across the piedmont, carrying clear to lightly tannin-stained water.

FishBase records a point measurement of 77 °F and pH 6.1 at the collection site, consistent with the moderately warm, slightly acidic piedmont streams of the eastern Andes-to-Llanos transition zone. Flow is a notable feature of the habitat: the species was collected from reaches with discernible current over sandy bottoms rather than from standing water or heavily vegetated backwaters. The Güejar River basin lies entirely within the Sierra de La Macarena National Natural Park, which affords the habitat a degree of formal protection.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies specific to Bryconamericus macarenae are available in the accessible literature. Members of Bryconamericus are generally regarded as opportunistic omnivores, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and fallen arthropods — along with algae and organic detritus from the substrate and water column.

The benthopelagic station and sandy-substrate habitat of this species suggest a foraging strategy that combines water-column hunting for drifting invertebrates with bottom-feeding over sand. In captivity, Bryconamericus species typically accept small prepared foods, live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and fine granules without difficulty.

Mating

No specific courtship or mating observations have been published for Bryconamericus macarenae. By analogy with other small Bryconamericus and Characidae species, the species is almost certainly an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care — the modal reproductive strategy across the family.

In flowing-water characids of similar ecology, males typically pursue ripe females through open water or among fine substrate cover, and spawning occurs in brief, simultaneous releases of eggs and sperm with no subsequent guarding. Males in breeding condition sometimes show slightly brighter coloration or minor physical differentiation, but no formal account of sexual dimorphism or courtship behaviour specific to this species has been recorded.

Breeding

Bryconamericus macarenae has not been bred in captivity to the knowledge of the published literature. As a small-bodied, flowing-water characid it would be expected to deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation, roots, or clean sandy substrate, with hatching occurring within two to four days at warm temperatures typical of its native range.

For hobbyists who might attempt captive breeding, the general approach used for similar Bryconamericus and small Characidae applies: a well-filtered, moderately flowing tank with fine substrate or spawning mops, slightly acidic to neutral, warm water, and conditioning on live and frozen invertebrate foods. Eggs and adults should be separated immediately after spawning, as no parental care is expected and egg predation by the adults is the rule across the group. Fry would require very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Bryconamericus macarenae is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist collections or ichthyological research contexts. Its restricted endemic range within a protected Colombian national park and its lack of notable coloration mean it has not attracted commercial collection or hobby cultivation.

Were it to be maintained in an aquarium, the setup appropriate for similar small, active Neotropical stream characids would apply: a tank with gentle-to-moderate water flow, sandy substrate, and a group of at least six individuals to allow natural shoaling behaviour. Water conditions reflecting its native habitat — around 75–79 °F and a pH near neutral to slightly acidic — would be appropriate. It would likely mix peacefully with other small, non-aggressive species of comparable size. At under 2 in standard length it requires no large tank, but good filtration and water quality are important for any small stream-adapted fish.

Conservation

Bryconamericus macarenae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2021). While the species is endemic to the Güejar River basin within a geographically restricted mountain range, the entire range falls within the Sierra de La Macarena National Natural Park — one of Colombia's flagship protected areas and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. That formal protection status is likely a significant factor in the Least Concern assessment, as it provides a degree of habitat security not available to many endemics of the eastern Andes piedmont.

Nonetheless, the Macarena region has experienced complex pressures including agricultural encroachment, historical conflict, and colonisation along its margins, and rivers in the piedmont transition zone face broader basin-scale threats from land-use change downstream. No targeted monitoring programme for B. macarenae is publicly reported, and the species' biology and population size remain poorly known. Its small body size, restricted range, and apparent association with flowing clear-water conditions over clean sandy substrate make it potentially sensitive to sedimentation and water-quality degradation — stressors that warrant continued attention even within a protected area.
