Cheirodon parahybae is a small characin of the subfamily Cheirodontinae, reaching under 1.5 in in length and known only from the Paraíba do Sul River basin in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915, it was long treated as a synonym of the closely related Cheirodon ibicuhiensis before Buckup and colleagues confirmed it as a valid species in 2007. The IUCN assesses it as Data Deficient — a reflection of how little is documented about its distribution, population, and ecology rather than an indication of safety.

Taxonomy & naming

Cheirodon parahybae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915 as part of his broad survey of South American characins (Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum, vol. 7). The type locality is the Rio Paraíba — now more precisely referred to as the Paraíba do Sul — at Campos, in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Cheirodon parahybae Eigenmann, 1915.

The species had a troubled taxonomic history: Luiz Roberto Malabarba's 1998 revision of the Cheirodontinae treated C. parahybae as a junior synonym of Cheirodon ibicuhiensis (Eigenmann, 1915), another species described in the same 1915 paper. Its independent species status was subsequently restored by Paulo Buckup and co-authors in 2007, who distinguished it from C. ibicuhiensis on morphological grounds. The two species represent a classical example of confusing closely related small characins from distant river basins — C. ibicuhiensis is associated with the Ibicuí system (Paraná drainage) in southern Brazil, while C. parahybae is tied to the Atlantic-slope Paraíba do Sul.

The genus Cheirodon belongs to the subfamily Cheirodontinae, a diverse Neotropical group of small, often schooling characins. The subfamily has undergone repeated revisions, with several genera redefined and realigned; Cheirodon itself remains paraphyletic in some analyses. Malabarba's 2003 reference work is the standard treatment of cheirodontine systematics cited in FishBase records for this species.

Morphology

Cheirodon parahybae is a small, slender characin. FishBase records a maximum total length of 1.5 in, placing it among the smallest members of the genus. Like other cheirodontines it has the typical characiform body plan: a fusiform, laterally compressed form, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data for this species specifically are not well documented in the broadly available literature, owing to its history as a synonym and the limited material studied. The genus name Cheirodon derives from the Greek cheir (hand) and odous (teeth), a reference to the hand-like arrangement of teeth characteristic of the genus — multicuspid teeth aligned in a distinctive pattern in the premaxilla. Colour in life is not extensively described in accessible sources; as with many small cheirodontines it is presumably silvery with a lateral stripe and possibly a dark caudal spot, but precise coloration data should be confirmed from voucher material.

Habitat

The species is known from the Paraíba do Sul River basin, a major Atlantic-slope drainage running through the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro, entering the Atlantic near Campos in northern Rio de Janeiro State. The type locality — Campos, Rio de Janeiro — sits in the lower portion of this basin, in a region of coastal lowland and floodplain.

The IUCN assessment classifies its habitat as inland wetlands including permanent rivers, streams, creeks, and permanent freshwater lakes. The Paraíba do Sul basin is a heavily modified drainage: significant portions run through one of Brazil's most densely industrialised and urbanised corridors, and the river has been heavily altered by water diversion (notably the CEDAE system supplying Rio de Janeiro city), impoundments, deforestation, and effluent inputs over the past century. Whether C. parahybae persists throughout the basin or is now restricted to specific reaches is unknown; the IUCN notes that its distribution has not been adequately surveyed.

Feeding

No specific dietary data for Cheirodon parahybae are documented in the available literature. As a cheirodontine characin it likely feeds on small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, algae, and organic detritus in the water column and at the surface — the generalist opportunistic feeding mode typical of small schooling characins in South American lowland rivers.

In the aquarium, if kept, it would be expected to accept fine-grained prepared foods, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and micro-worms. Given how little is published on its specific ecology, hobbyists keeping this species would be working largely from analogy with other small cheirodontines.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been described in the literature for Cheirodon parahybae specifically. As with most small characins it is presumed to be an egg-scattering species that spawns in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, with no pair bond and no parental care — the standard mode for the subfamily Cheirodontinae.

The IUCN assessment explicitly lists reproduction as one of the research priorities for this species, noting that nothing is known about its reproductive biology. Until field or aquarium observations are published, any description of its spawning behaviour would be speculative.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity has not been documented in the accessible literature for Cheirodon parahybae. Based on the biology of related cheirodontines, a standard small-characin breeding setup — a densely planted or moss-furnished tank, slightly acidic to neutral soft water, and conditioning on live foods — would be the starting point. Eggs in this group are typically small, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, and scattered among plants or the substrate, hatching within 24 to 48 hours at tropical temperatures; the adults would be expected to consume eggs and fry unless separated.

The species has not established itself in the ornamental trade, so captive breeding records are essentially absent. Any future husbandry notes would be valuable given the species' Data Deficient status and the IUCN recommendation for research into its reproductive biology.

In the aquarium

Cheirodon parahybae is not a species encountered in the mainstream ornamental trade. It is absent from the Seriously Fish database, and no hobbyist profiles are known. Given its very small size (under 1.5 in), the Paraíba do Sul drainage chemistry (a warm, largely lowland Atlantic-slope river), and its cheirodontine relatives, it would likely thrive in a small planted aquarium with neutral to slightly acidic water, temperatures in the tropical range, and a group of conspecifics to express its natural schooling behaviour.

Anyone obtaining specimens — most plausibly researchers or specialised collectors — should consult recent ichthyological literature for the most current distributional data and prioritise captive documentation, as even basic husbandry observations would add meaningfully to what is known about this little-studied fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cheirodon parahybae as Data Deficient (DD) in 2018, with the assessment published in 2022. The DD listing does not indicate the species is secure; it means the available information is insufficient to determine its risk of extinction. The IUCN notes that it is known only from the Paraíba do Sul basin in Rio de Janeiro, that its population trend is unknown, and that it has not been recorded in any protected area.

Identified threats include urbanisation and habitat degradation in the Paraíba do Sul corridor — one of Brazil's most economically active river valleys — as well as deforestation of riparian zones and the potential impact of invasive species. The assessment authority, Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), identifies research needs across distribution, population size, diet, and reproduction. The Paraíba do Sul has been subject to major water diversion and industrial use for decades, making the persistence and range of small endemic fish species in the basin genuinely uncertain.
