Cheirodon pisciculus is a small, schooling characid endemic to the Chilean Mediterranean-climate river basins — the Maipo, Aconcagua, and Huasco drainages, and the coastal Estero Quintero system — where it occupies cool, clear streams against a backdrop of dryland shrubland and irrigated agriculture. It is the only native characid of Chile, a relictual presence in rivers more usually associated with austral climate than with the tropical family that claims most of its relatives. Assessed by the IUCN as Endangered, it faces a population in suspected decline from river fragmentation, pollution, and the relentless pressure of introduced fishes including common carp, mosquitofish, brown trout, and rainbow trout.

Taxonomy & naming

Cheirodon pisciculus was described by the French-American naturalist Charles Frédéric Girard in 1855, from material collected in Chilean rivers. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Cheirodon pisciculus Girard, 1855. Cheirodon is a small genus within the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes, and C. pisciculus is the sole native characid to reach Chilean territory, making it biogeographically unusual in a country whose fish fauna is otherwise dominated by Galaxiidae, Atherinopsidae, and Siluriformes.

The species sits within the subfamily Cheirodontinae, a group of small, often schooling characids distributed across South America. Its presence in Chile reflects a southern extension of the family's historical range rather than a recent colonisation, and the species' isolation in Mediterranean-climate basins has likely contributed to its restricted distribution and vulnerability.

Morphology

Cheirodon pisciculus is a small, slender characid reaching a maximum of 2 in standard length (SL). The body form is typical of small schooling Cheirodontinae: laterally compressed, with a relatively pointed snout, a small terminal mouth, and a forked tail. Coloration in life is silvery, often with a faint lateral stripe and iridescent sheen, the overall impression being of a modest but clean-lined minnow-sized tetra.

The species' trophic level of 2.3 (±0.4) as recorded on FishBase places it solidly among low-trophic omnivores that graze fine particulate matter and small invertebrates rather than pursuing active prey. The benthopelagic lifestyle — occupying the water column above but in association with the substrate — reflects its habit of feeding along the bottom and among submerged structure as well as in open water.

Habitat

The species is endemic to a cluster of river basins in central Chile between approximately 20°S and 35°S: the Maipo, Aconcagua, and Huasco drainages plus the coastal Estero Quintero system. These are Mediterranean-climate rivers characterised by strong seasonality — winter rainfall recharging flows that diminish to a fraction of peak discharge in the long dry summer. The rivers drain from the Andes west to the Pacific, passing through agricultural lowlands where water extraction, diversion, and modification are intense.

Cheirodon pisciculus occupies the benthopelagic zone of these rivers and associated inland wetlands, tolerating conditions that range from clear upland streams to more turbid lowland reaches. For those maintaining the species in a conservation or research context, the biology points toward a cool-water setup reflecting its Mediterranean-climate origins: temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius would be more appropriate than tropical norms, with good filtration, moderate flow, and fine-leaved plant cover. As a schooling fish it should be kept in groups. Diet should include fine particulate foods, small live or frozen invertebrates, and vegetable matter consistent with its omnivorous, aufwuchs-grazing lifestyle in the wild. The species has not been evaluated for aquarium keeping at a commercial scale, and husbandry data are accordingly limited.

Conservation
