Deuterodon janeiroensis was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the current valid name as Deuterodon janeiroensis (Eigenmann, 1908), with Astyanax janeiroensis recorded as a synonym — reflecting the species' long-standing placement in Astyanax before it was reassigned to Deuterodon. The parenthetical authority signals that the species was described under a different genus name than the one it now carries.
Deuterodon is a South American genus of small to medium characids within the family Characidae, distributed predominantly in Atlantic Forest drainages of Brazil. The genus has undergone repeated revision as molecular and morphological studies continue to reshape the higher classification of Characidae, and the boundaries of Deuterodon relative to allied genera remain an active area of systematic investigation. As a schooling characid it should be kept in groups of at least six to display natural behaviour and minimise intraspecific stress. It would likely coexist with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates. Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Deuterodon janeiroensis as Least Concern (LC) in 2018, citing a distribution that, while restricted to the Rio de Janeiro region, is not considered to have declined below the thresholds for a threatened category at the time of assessment.
