Deuterodon langei is a small characid endemic to the coastal river basins of southern Brazil, known from the Atlantic drainages running from Cubatão in Santa Catarina state north to the Nhundiaquara River system in Paraná. A pelagic, fusiform fish reaching around 5 in total length, it occupies forested streams and rivers where it feeds on a mixed diet of plant material and invertebrates. Assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, it remains tied to the intact Atlantic Forest stream habitats of its narrow coastal range.

Taxonomy & naming

Deuterodon langei was described by Travassos in 1957 and is placed in the genus Deuterodon, a characid group distributed in Atlantic coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Deuterodon langei Travassos, 1957. Deuterodon belongs to the family Characidae — the broad, speciose assemblage of characins that dominates South American freshwaters — and the genus itself comprises a number of small, silvery stream-dwelling species endemic to the Atlantic slope.

The genus Deuterodon has had a complex taxonomic history within the characid radiation, and several species previously assigned to Astyanax and related genera have been shifted into or out of Deuterodon as systematic understanding of the group has evolved. Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for placement and spelling of the valid name.

Morphology

Deuterodon langei is a fusiform, laterally compressed characid of typical small-to-medium size for the genus, reaching a reported maximum of 5 in total length, with sexual maturity recorded between roughly 6.4 and 3.5 in standard length. Body form is streamlined and built for life in open water, pelagic within the stream column rather than associated closely with substrate.

Colouration follows the general Deuterodon pattern: a silvery to pale olive flanked body, often with a lateral stripe or midlateral spot, and the typical dark caudal peduncle marking seen across the Atlantic-slope characids. Like most members of the genus it has a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, the single dorsal fin characteristic of characids, and a subterminal to terminal mouth reflecting its omnivorous feeding habit. Females grow somewhat larger than males, the usual pattern in the group.

Habitat

Deuterodon langei is restricted to coastal Atlantic-slope river systems in southern Brazil, specifically from the Cubatão drainage in Santa Catarina northward to the Nhundiaquara River in Paraná. These are short, rapid-draining coastal basins that descend from the Serra do Mar escarpment to the coastal lowlands. The species is pelagic in habit, occupying the mid-water of streams and rivers rather than hugging the bottom.

Natural habitat is the forested Atlantic coastal streams of the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) biome, where intact riparian forest provides shade, leaf litter, fallen wood, and inputs of terrestrial invertebrates and fruits. Water in these coastal drainages is typically cool to warm, soft, and slightly to moderately acidic, reflecting the granitic and metamorphic geology of the Serra do Mar. The IUCN characterises its habitat as inland rivers and streams within forest and wetland systems.

Feeding

Deuterodon langei is an omnivore with a diet that spans algae, fruits, seeds, and aquatic insects, as reported in the IUCN assessment. This breadth is typical of Atlantic-slope Deuterodon species, which opportunistically exploit whatever is available in the water column and at the surface — terrestrial fruits and seeds falling from riparian forest, biofilm and algae scraped from surfaces, and invertebrates including aquatic insect larvae.

The mix of plant material and animal prey places it in the herbivorous-to-omnivorous dietary guild common among small Neotropical stream characids. In practice the proportions likely shift seasonally with flood pulse and fruit fall, as is well documented in other Atlantic-slope characids occupying similar forested-stream niches.

Mating

Detailed mating behaviour has not been specifically documented in the literature for Deuterodon langei, but the IUCN assessment notes seasonal reproduction occurring in spring and summer, with total spawning (the entire clutch released in a single event or concentrated spawning season) and high fecundity — a pattern typical of small Neotropical stream characids. As an egg-scattering characid it almost certainly engages in group or pair broadcast spawning over vegetation or substrate with no parental care.

Males of small Atlantic-slope Deuterodon species typically display by approaching females with erect fins, and spawning chases through vegetation or open water are characteristic of the group. The concentration of spawning activity in the warmer, higher-discharge months of spring and summer aligns with patterns seen across the Atlantic Forest characid fauna, where rising water levels and temperature cues trigger reproduction.

Breeding

Deuterodon langei reproduces seasonally in spring and summer with high fecundity and total or near-total spawning in a single seasonal event, according to the IUCN assessment. Like other small characids it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are broadcast among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over submerged vegetation and are abandoned immediately after fertilisation.

Breeding in captivity has not been widely documented for this species, but the general biology parallels that of other small stream-dwelling Deuterodon. Conditioned adults in soft, slightly acidic, warm water would be expected to spawn over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in a manner analogous to other small Atlantic-slope tetras, with eggs hatching within a few days and tiny fry requiring infusoria or equivalent fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Deuterodon langei is not a commonly encountered aquarium species and is essentially absent from the mainstream hobby trade, likely because its range overlaps with many similar, more commercially available small Brazilian tetras. It has no widely used common name, which itself reflects its low hobby profile. Fish of this kind occasionally appear in specialist Brazilian-biotope or Atlantic-slope community imports.

For a keeper sourcing this species through specialist channels, the biotope requirements are those of the Atlantic Forest coastal stream: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, good oxygenation, and a planted tank with open swimming space. As a pelagic, active characid it would be expected to school and benefit from groups of six or more. Diet in captivity would be undemanding — small flake, micro pellets, frozen Daphnia and brine shrimp, with some vegetable matter offered. Tankmates from the same Atlantic-slope drainage biotope — other small Deuterodon, Hyphessobrycon, or Mimagoniates species — would suit it well.

Conservation

Deuterodon langei is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in November 2018 and published in 2022. The assessment notes a stable population with no significant threats identified at the time of evaluation. Its coastal Atlantic-slope range encompasses several catchments from Santa Catarina to Paraná, giving it some distributional breadth relative to more narrowly endemic coastal-stream species.

The Atlantic Forest biome that houses its habitat is one of the world's most threatened tropical forest systems, with a large proportion of original cover lost to agriculture, urbanisation, and industry along the densely settled Brazilian coast. While the current IUCN status is Least Concern, the long-term integrity of the forested-stream habitats on which D. langei depends is subject to ongoing pressure in this highly developed coastal corridor. Maintenance of riparian forest cover in the Serra do Mar coastal catchments is the key conservation factor for this and many co-distributed Atlantic-slope endemics.
