Taxonomy & naming
Deuterodon potaroensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 from material collected in the Potaro River basin of what was then British Guiana. The genus Deuterodon Eigenmann, 1908 was erected for a group of South American characids that has long resisted clean resolution: Lucena & Lucena (2002) noted that the generic placement of D. potaroensis was uncertain, and the species is sometimes treated as incertae sedis within the broader Stevardiinae or allied tribes of Characidae. The valid name as used in standard regional checklists is Deuterodon potaroensis Eigenmann, 1909.
The Guiana Shield was the centre of Eigenmann's field work in the early twentieth century, and many of his descriptions from this period were based on relatively limited museum lots. D. potaroensis appears to have been formally re-examined only in summary fashion since its original description; the annotated checklist of freshwater fishes of Guyana (ResearchGate, 2022) lists it as rare and records museum material at the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH 52967 and thirteen additional lots). The species is absent from the aquarium trade in any meaningful sense, and its biology beyond basic morphometrics is essentially undocumented in the primary literature.
Morphology
D. potaroensis is a slender, laterally compressed characid of modest proportions, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. Like most members of the Deuterodon assemblage it carries the basic characid body plan: a compressed, fusiform body, a well-developed adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and the dentition pattern that gives the genus its name — Deuterodon refers to a secondary tooth row or second dentition (Greek deuter, second; odous, tooth). Beyond these broad characters, detailed meristic and morphological data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature.
Colouration in life is not formally documented in published accounts. The species' trophic level has been estimated at 3.1, consistent with an invertivore-omnivore feeding at the lower-middle trophic levels typical of small stream characids of the Guiana Shield.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Potaro River basin, a tributary of the Essequibo River system in Guyana. The Potaro is best known internationally as the river over which Kaieteur Falls drops, one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world; its upper drainage cuts through ancient Precambrian basement rock and the sandstone formations of the Guiana Shield, producing warm, soft, weakly acidic blackwater and clearwater streams typical of this geological province.
Biotope accounts for Potaro River shore habitats describe warm tropical streams with low mineral content, reduced conductivity, and slightly acidic conditions — the soft, tea-coloured water characteristic of Guiana Shield rivers where tannins leach from leaf litter and peat accumulations. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, with a tropical thermal affinity. No depth or microhabitat data specific to D. potaroensis appear to be published; by analogy with congeners and co-occurring small characids, marginal or mid-channel habitats with leaf litter substrate and overhanging riparian vegetation are plausible.
Feeding
No specific dietary data have been published for Deuterodon potaroensis. Its estimated trophic level of 3.1 (FishBase) places it among small omnivore-invertivores, consistent with the feeding ecology of comparably sized Neotropical stream characids that opportunistically take small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, terrestrial insects falling to the water's surface, and plant-derived organic matter.
In the aquarium, small Deuterodon are typically straightforward to feed — comparable species accept fine flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia or Artemia nauplii. Because this species is essentially absent from the hobby, practical feeding observations are not available in the literature.
Mating
No observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Deuterodon potaroensis are recorded in the literature. By analogy with the wider genus and with small stream characids of the Guiana Shield generally, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care — the ancestral reproductive mode within Characidae.
Male Neotropical stream characids frequently show minor colour intensification and fin extension during courtship, but no specific secondary sexual characters have been described for this species. If seasonal spawning behaviour occurs, it likely tracks the Potaro River's hydrological cycle, with rising water levels during the wet season potentially cuing reproduction as in many co-occurring Guiana Shield characids.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity has not been documented for Deuterodon potaroensis, and the species is not in the ornamental trade. Based on the general biology of the genus and the broader Characidae, eggs would be expected to be small, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, and scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or deposited over leaf litter and sand substrate, with no subsequent parental care. Adults would likely consume eggs if given the opportunity.
Incubation period, fry size, and larval requirements are unknown. Any serious attempt to breed the species would require obtaining legally sourced wild specimens from Guyana under appropriate permits — a logistically demanding undertaking given the rarity of the species even in its native drainage.
In the aquarium
Deuterodon potaroensis is not available in the ornamental fish trade and is unknown to the hobby outside of specialist ichthyological collections. It appears in no major aquarium fish guides or hobby databases. For the purposes of any future captive situation, water chemistry should reflect the Potaro River's soft, weakly acidic to neutral conditions: low conductivity, pH in the range of approximately 5.5–7.0, and tropical temperatures in the 75–82 °F range.
Its small size (2.5 in SL) and presumed shoaling behaviour, common in small stream characids, suggest it would suit a species tank or a carefully assembled biotope aquarium representing the Potaro River shore habitat — fine substrate, leaf litter, tannin-stained water, dim lighting, and co-occurring species from the same drainage. Data on temperament, compatibility, or captive longevity are not available.
Conservation
Deuterodon potaroensis was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN in December 2020 (assessment ID 176155358). The LC listing reflects the assumption that the Potaro River basin, situated within the largely intact interior of Guyana, does not face the severe deforestation and habitat degradation pressures affecting lowland river systems elsewhere in South America. Guyana retains among the highest percentages of intact forest cover of any nation in the Neotropics, providing a degree of de facto protection to the drainage.
Nevertheless, annotated checklists of Guyanese freshwater fishes describe D. potaroensis as rare, and its known range is restricted to a single river basin. Gold mining activity — placer and alluvial mining — is an ongoing concern in the Potaro drainage, most visibly near Kaieteur National Park, and has the potential to increase sedimentation and mercury loading in habitats used by this and other endemic species. The combination of restricted range, apparent rarity, and extractive pressure in the basin makes ongoing monitoring desirable even under a current LC assessment.
