Deuterodon ribeirae is a small characid endemic to the Rio Ribeira de Iguape basin of southeastern Brazil, a coastal river system draining the Atlantic slopes of São Paulo state. Described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1911 under the original combination Astyanax ribeirae and later placed in Deuterodon, it is a benthopelagic freshwater species reaching about 3 in total length. Phylogeographic work has documented multiple haplotypes in the Iporanga region of the Ribeira drainage, suggesting the basin harbours meaningful within-species genetic structure. The species remains unassessed by the IUCN, obscure in the aquarium trade, and known principally from ichthyological survey collections.

Taxonomy & naming

Deuterodon ribeirae was originally described as Astyanax ribeirae by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1911, with the type locality in the Rio Ribeira de Iguape basin of São Paulo, Brazil. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Deuterodon, a characid genus endemic to coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil, where it remains under the valid combination Deuterodon ribeirae (Eigenmann, 1911). The parenthetical authority reflects the generic reassignment from Eigenmann's original placement in Astyanax.

Deuterodon belongs to the family Characidae and is part of the diverse Stevardiinae-adjacent assemblage of small South American tetras. The genus is broadly defined by its restriction to Atlantic coastal drainages from Rio de Janeiro southward into Rio Grande do Sul, and most of its species are locally endemic, often confined to a single river system. Relationships within Deuterodon and its boundaries with allied genera such as Hyphessobrycon and Astyanax remain a topic of ongoing systematic revision, and species-level identifications in museum material can be challenging without careful morphometric analysis.
