Deuterodon rosae is a small characid endemic to the Itapocú River basin in the Atlantic coastal drainage of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. Originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1908 from material collected at Rio Jaraguá near Joinville, this benthopelagic schooling tetra occupies the subtropical freshwaters of a river system tucked against the Serra do Mar escarpment. It reaches roughly 4.5 in standard length — comparatively large for a member of its genus — and like most Deuterodon remains poorly known to the aquarium hobby, existing largely as a subject of regional Brazilian ichthyological surveys rather than international fishkeeping.

Taxonomy & naming

Deuterodon rosae was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1908, in a paper published in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Vienna. The original placement was in the genus Joinvillea, which Steindachner erected for this species; subsequent work transferred it to Deuterodon. The type locality is the Rio Jaraguá at Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil, and the lectotype (NMW 69596, 4 in) is held in the collections of the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, records the combination Deuterodon rosae (Steindachner, 1908) as current and valid. The species was redescribed by Travassos in 1957.

Deuterodon is a South American characid genus in the subfamily Stevardiinae (previously placed variously in other arrangements within the family Characidae). The genus name combines the Greek deúteros (second) and odon (tooth), a reference to the distinctive dentition of the lower jaw. The species has sometimes appeared in the literature under older family-level placements; the family field here follows Eschmeyer's Catalog and modern practice in treating Deuterodon within Characidae.

Morphology

Deuterodon rosae is a moderately sized tetra for its genus, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, suggesting it occupies the middle to lower water column in its natural habitat rather than strictly the surface or substrate. Like other Deuterodon, it displays the family's characteristic compressed, fusiform body plan typical of open-water schooling characins: a fairly deep body relative to length, a terminal mouth, and the adipose fin that defines the family.

Detailed external morphology — coloration, fin ray counts, lateral line scale counts — is not well documented in the accessible literature for this species, and the cautious position is to avoid fabricating specifics. What is recorded is the benthopelagic ecology and a size that places D. rosae toward the larger end of the Deuterodon size range, where many congeners remain well under 4 in. The type specimen (lectotype at 4 in) provides the primary size benchmark.

Habitat

Deuterodon rosae is restricted to the Itapocú River basin in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, part of the Atlantic coastal drainage east of the Serra Geral. The Itapocú (also Itapocu) is a relatively short coastal river that drains the slopes of the Serra do Mar into the Atlantic coastal plain near Joinville, Brazil's northernmost large city in Santa Catarina. The type locality — Rio Jaraguá at Joinville — places the species in the lowland and lower-slope reaches of this drainage.

Freshwater fish of Atlantic coastal Santa Catarina rivers occupy subtropical conditions: temperatures that can range seasonally from the low teens to the mid-twenties Celsius, with generally clear to lightly stained water fed by montane rainfall over the Serra do Mar. The Itapocú basin sits in one of the most biodiverse stretches of the Atlantic Forest biome, a global biodiversity hotspot with high levels of aquatic endemism. The species is freshwater only; FishBase records no estuarine or brackish occurrence.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study specific to Deuterodon rosae has been documented in the sources available for this account. Deuterodon rosae is not an established aquarium fish in the international hobby. It occupies a niche in Brazilian regional aquariology — native species of Atlantic coastal drainages are increasingly of interest to hobbyists and researchers focused on biodiversity-aware fishkeeping — but it has not crossed into wide availability outside Brazil, and detailed husbandry accounts from aquarists are not present in the literature reviewed.

Its size (nearly 4.5 in SL) means that any aquarium housing D. rosae would need to be of substantial volume — a tank of at least 47 in in length — to accommodate a proper school. The subtropical origin suggests it does not require the high temperatures often associated with Amazonian species; temperatures in the range of 64–75 °F are likely appropriate, making it a candidate for unheated or lightly heated indoor aquariums in temperate climates. Neutral, moderately soft to moderately hard water consistent with Atlantic Forest coastal streams would suit it. As a schooling benthopelagic characid, it should be kept in groups of six or more.

Conservation

Deuterodon rosae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2025. This designation reflects that, despite the species' restricted range in the Itapocú River basin of Santa Catarina, the population is not currently considered to face threats at a level meeting the thresholds for a threatened category.

Nonetheless, the Itapocú basin sits within the Atlantic Forest biome, which has suffered some of the most severe deforestation in the Western Hemisphere — historically reduced to less than 15 percent of its original extent. Freshwater fish endemic to Atlantic coastal drainages in southern Brazil face ongoing pressure from agricultural runoff, sedimentation, water extraction, and riparian degradation. The Least Concern assessment should not be read as indicating that the species is without vulnerability; it reflects the current data rather than an absence of risk. Monitoring of Atlantic Forest stream fish communities remains a research priority, and the narrow endemism of D. rosae to a single river basin means that large-scale catchment change could alter its status quickly.
