Deuterodon singularis is a small characid endemic to the coastal drainages of Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil, where it occupies clear, rocky, low-order streams of the Tubarão River basin and neighbouring coastal systems draining from the Tijucas to the Madre rivers. Described by Lucena & Lucena in 1992, it remains little-known outside regional ichthyological studies, yet its stable and relatively abundant populations in a geographically compact range earned it a Least Concern assessment from the IUCN in 2018 — with the important caveat that coal mining and intensive porcine production in the Criciúma and Tubarão regions represent real and ongoing threats to the watersheds it calls home.

Taxonomy & naming

Deuterodon singularis was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena and Zilda Margarete Sandoval de Lucena in 1992. The species belongs to the genus Deuterodon, a group of small to medium-sized characids distributed across the coastal and interior drainages of southeastern and southern Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid name as Deuterodon singularis Lucena & Lucena, 1992.

The genus Deuterodon has been subject to ongoing phylogenetic scrutiny within the diverse family Characidae, as molecular and morphological work has repeatedly reshuffled the boundaries between Deuterodon and related genera such as Astyanax and Hyphessobrycon. Phylogeographic studies of the Deuterodon radiation in southeastern Brazil have linked diversification events to Neogene neotectonic activity along the Brazilian coast, with vicariance and drainage capture isolating populations across adjacent watersheds — a pattern that helps explain why several coastal drainages each harbour their own endemic or near-endemic Deuterodon species. Karyotypic evolution within the group has also been documented, with chromosome number variation tracking species boundaries and biogeographic history.

Morphology

Deuterodon singularis is a small characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3.5 in, placing it in the mid-range for the genus. Like other Deuterodon, it is a relatively slender, laterally compressed fish with the typical characid body plan: a single dorsal fin, a forked caudal fin, and an adipose fin posterior to the dorsal. The specific epithet singularis (Latin: singular, distinctive) alludes to characters that distinguish it from congeners, though the precise meristic and morphometric features that define the species are detailed in the original description.

Field and collection records describe the species as benthopelagic in habit — spending time both in the water column and near the substrate — consistent with its use of rocky stream environments. Its trophic level of approximately 3.2 (FishBase) indicates an omnivorous to mildly carnivorous diet, placing it among insects and small invertebrates as well as algae and plant matter.

Habitat

Deuterodon singularis is endemic to a narrow stretch of the Santa Catarina coastline in southern Brazil, occurring in the Tubarão River basin and in coastal drainages between the Tijucas and Madre (Da Madre) rivers — a combined extent of occurrence estimated at roughly 5,291 mi². Within this range it occupies clear-water, low-order streams with rocky substrates, typical of the small, fast-draining coastal rivers that descend from the Serra Geral escarpment to the Atlantic coast.

The species is recorded from inland wetlands in the form of permanent rivers and streams. The naturally clear, rocky habitats it favours contrast with the increasingly altered landscapes of the region: the Criciúma area in particular has a long history of coal mining, and the Tubarão watershed supports intensive porcine agriculture, both of which contribute sediment, nutrients, and contaminants to tributary streams. Despite these pressures, IUCN assessors concluded in 2018 that populations remain relatively frequent and abundant, and no protected-area populations have been recorded.

Feeding

Based on its trophic level and IUCN assessment notes, Deuterodon singularis feeds as an omnivore on insects, small aquatic invertebrates, and algae grazed from rocky surfaces, a diet typical of small rheophilic characids in Brazilian coastal streams. The rocky substrate of its preferred habitat provides both shelter and a productive surface for periphyton and the invertebrate communities that depend on it.

In the aquarium, closely related Deuterodon species and small Astyanax-grade characids generally accept a wide range of prepared foods including flake and small pellets, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter. Specific feeding preferences for D. singularis in captivity are not well documented in the hobbyist literature.

Mating

No detailed observational studies of mating behaviour in Deuterodon singularis have been published. As a member of the wider Deuterodon and Astyanax-grade characid assemblage, it is expected to follow the open egg-scattering pattern typical of the group: males pursue females and fertilisation occurs externally, with eggs and sperm released simultaneously into the water column or among fine-leaved vegetation and substrate, after which the parents provide no further care.

In the small, clear-water stream habitats of southern Brazil, spawning in related species typically tracks seasonal cues including rising temperatures and rainfall-driven changes in flow, which serve as proxies for the availability of suitable nursery habitat. Without captive breeding records specifically for D. singularis, spawning details remain inferred from congeners.

Breeding

Deuterodon singularis has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree, and specific breeding data — incubation period, egg number, fry size, or developmental temperature — are not available in the literature surveyed. The reproductive mode is inferred to be the egg-scattering, non-guarding strategy universal among the small characids of southeastern Brazil.

Captive breeding of related small Deuterodon and Astyanax species generally involves conditioning adults on live and frozen foods, inducing spawning with soft, slightly acidic water and a temperature rise, and removing adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Eggs are adhesive or semi-adhesive and scattered among fine-leaved plants or settle to the substrate; hatching occurs within a few days at tropical temperatures. Fry are small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially before graduating to nauplii. Whether D. singularis would follow this pattern precisely in captivity remains untested.

In the aquarium

Deuterodon singularis is essentially absent from the international ornamental fish trade and is not available through hobbyist channels. It is a species of regional scientific interest rather than an aquarium fish, and its care requirements have not been documented outside its natural context.

For the purposes of conservation aquaculture or research collections, the habitat profile suggests that cool, well-oxygenated, clear water replicating the rocky coastal streams of southern Brazil would be appropriate: moderate temperatures consistent with the subtropical climate of Santa Catarina, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and good current. A species of this type would likely thrive in a species tank with sandy or rocky substrate, strong filtration, and tankmates of similar size and temperament. Until captive stock becomes available, detailed husbandry notes cannot responsibly be given.

Conservation

Deuterodon singularis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022 (assessment ID 134708987). The assessment notes a stable population trend, with the species described as relatively frequent and abundant within its restricted range. Its extent of occurrence is estimated at approximately 5,291 mi², confined to Santa Catarina state, Brazil — making it a strict endemic to a small coastal sector.

The principal threats identified are habitat degradation from coal mining in the Criciúma and Tubarão watersheds, intensive porcine production generating nutrient and sediment runoff into tributary streams, and conversion of lotic (flowing) habitats to lentic (standing) water through impoundment. No populations within formally protected areas have been recorded, which limits the extent to which existing conservation infrastructure can buffer these threats. While the Least Concern rating reflects current population stability, the species' narrow endemic range and absence from protected areas mean that continued habitat degradation in the Tubarão basin could rapidly alter its status. The assessment was carried out under the authority of the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the Brazilian agency responsible for Red List assessments of freshwater fishes.
