Deuterodon stigmaturus was originally described by Gomes in 1947 and is recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes with the parenthetical authority (Gomes, 1947), indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Deuterodon. The genus Deuterodon belongs to the speciose family Characidae, the true characins and tetras, a group that dominates freshwater fish diversity across Central and South America.

Deuterodon is a genus of medium-small characids distributed in coastal river systems of southeastern and southern Brazil. Several species in the genus are morphologically similar and have required careful revision to disentangle; D. stigmaturus is distinguished by a combination of meristic and colour characters that include the markings referenced in its epithet. Morphology

Deuterodon stigmaturus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in, making it a moderately sized member of its genus. Like most Deuterodon, it has the typical tetra body plan: laterally compressed, fusiform, with a forked tail, a single adipose fin, and the large eyes characteristic of stream-dwelling characids that must orient in shifting light conditions.

The specific epithet stigmaturus refers to a mark or spot associated with the tail region — a feature common to several small South American characids as a species-recognition signal or predator deflection cue. The overall coloration is unremarkable in preserved specimens but presumably silvery with the caudal spot more prominent in life, as is typical for stream tetras of this group. Habitat

The species is described as benthopelagic, meaning it occupies the water column close to the substrate rather than the open water or the surface — a foraging position consistent with its heavy use of benthic filamentous algae and detritus. Stream habitats in this region experience seasonal variation in flow, temperature, and food availability, which appears to drive the species' reproductive seasonality.

Feeding

Deuterodon stigmaturus has an unusually plant- and algae-dominated diet for a tetra. Stomach-content analysis from the Mampituba River drainage found filamentous algae making up approximately 41% of diet volume, terrestrial plant material around 20%, detritus roughly 12%, and aquatic invertebrates only about 9% — a trophic profile more herbivore-detritivore than the insectivore-omnivore diet typical of many small characids.

This emphasis on algae and plant matter likely reflects both the abundance of benthic filamentous algae in the clear, rocky streams the species inhabits and a degree of dietary specialisation within the genus. The relatively small contribution of invertebrates does not mean the fish ignores them — opportunistic feeding on small aquatic insects and crustaceans is expected — but the primary caloric intake appears to be plant-derived. In captivity, a diet that includes spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and algae wafers alongside standard prepared foods would better match the species' natural nutritional profile than a purely meat-based regime.

Mating

Deuterodon stigmaturus is a seasonal breeder, with reproductive activity peaking in the austral spring and summer and a maximum spawning peak in January. This pattern is common among stream-dwelling South American characids, where seasonal cues — rising water temperature, increased day length, and altered flow regimes following summer rains — trigger gonadal development and spawning behaviour.

Males develop sexually dimorphic anal-fin spinelets during the reproductive season, a characteristic seen in a number of characid genera and used by ichthyologists as a secondary sexual character. These spinelets may assist in positioning during spawning. It is a peaceful, schooling-tendency fish and would be expected to coexist with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. As a stream-dweller close to the bottom, ample open swimming space and a substrate that allows benthic foraging would be appropriate. Hobbyist accounts are essentially absent from the available literature, so care recommendations here are extrapolated from the species' natural ecology and comparisons with related stream characids.
