Should the species become available, husbandry would likely parallel that of other medium-sized stream tetras from southeastern Brazil: a well-filtered, well-oxygenated aquarium of moderate length (at least 35.5–39.5 in for a group), soft to moderately hard water at slightly acidic to neutral pH, and temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius to replicate the cooler headwater conditions of its native streams. A planted setup with subdued lighting and a dark substrate would encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress. The species should be kept in groups of six or more, as schooling provides security for wild-caught specimens and brings out natural behaviour.

Conservation

Deuterodon supparis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated November 2018. While the species is not currently considered globally threatened, it is endemic to Brazil and associated with the Atlantic Forest freshwater ecoregion — one of the most biodiverse and heavily degraded biomes on Earth.
