Taxonomy & naming
Deuterodon taeniatus was originally described as Tetragonopterus taeniatus by Leonard Jenyns in 1842, based on specimens collected along the coast of southeastern Brazil during the famous voyage of H.M.S. Beagle. Jenyns published the description in the fish volume of The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle, edited under the direction of Charles Darwin. The authority is therefore written with parentheses — (Jenyns, 1842) — reflecting the subsequent transfer from Tetragonopterus to Deuterodon.
Deuterodon is a genus within the family Characidae that encompasses a number of small to medium-sized characids from Atlantic-slope drainages of Brazil. The genus has undergone taxonomic revision in recent decades, with several species reassigned as the phylogeny of Neotropical characids has been refined. The species has been reported from the rio São João and rio Macaé basins, which belong to the broader Paraíba do Sul drainage system of Rio de Janeiro State, as well as the Benevente basin in Espírito Santo. A ZooKeys study on the group confirmed its occurrence in these Atlantic-slope headwater systems. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the current valid name.
Morphology
Deuterodon taeniatus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in, making it a medium-sized member of its genus. The body is laterally compressed in typical characid fashion. Published accounts note a body ornamented with vertical stripes and a humeral spot — a dark blotch behind the gill cover that is a common feature in Deuterodon and related genera, useful in field identification.
Few detailed morphological descriptions are available in the hobbyist literature, and the species is not regularly illustrated in trade references. The combination of the humeral spot, lateral stripe patterning, and the species' geographic origin in the coastal Atlantic Forest rivers of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo together allow tentative field identification, though formal identification requires examination of meristic characters (fin-ray and scale counts) alongside geography.
Habitat
Deuterodon taeniatus occupies rivers and streams in the Atlantic Forest coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil. Its confirmed range spans the Macaé, São João, and Paraíba do Sul river basins in Rio de Janeiro State, and the Benevente river basin in Espírito Santo. These are predominantly tropical, clear-to-moderately-clear headwater streams and mid-reaches flowing through what remains of the Atlantic Forest, one of the world's most biodiverse and threatened biomes.

Like most tetras, it almost certainly breeds seasonally in nature in response to hydrological cues — rising water levels and associated changes in temperature and food availability during the wet season in southeastern Brazil. Adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or benthic substrate would be consistent with the genus, though direct observation has not been recorded in accessible literature.
Breeding
Deuterodon taeniatus has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the available literature. Its reproductive biology is inferred from the family pattern: egg-scattering with no parental care, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate, and free-swimming fry that require fine first foods after absorbing the yolk sac.
For aquarists who may attempt spawning, a setup following standard small-tetra protocols — a species tank with soft fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, slightly acidic to neutral water, and a spawning trigger such as a small water change with cooler conditioned water — would be a reasonable starting point. Deuterodon taeniatus is not an established aquarium fish. It does not appear in mainstream hobby trade, and no care sheets specific to the species are available. Aquarists sourcing wild-collected specimens from Brazilian Atlantic Forest drainages would be working largely from first principles, extrapolating from what is known of the genus and the family.
Given the cool-to-warm tropical streams of its natural habitat, aquarium water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius would be appropriate, with good filtration and moderate flow replicating the clear, well-oxygenated conditions of Atlantic Forest streams. A planted aquarium with some open swimming space and a diet that includes vegetable components would reflect the species' natural ecology. As a medium-sized characid to around 4 in, it would need tankmates of comparable size and temperament. Its rarity in the hobby means that any captive husbandry information would be a valuable contribution to knowledge of the species.
Conservation
