Gephyrocharax melanocheir is a small, slender characin from Colombia's Andean river systems — a predator by habit, an insect-hunter that patrols small shaded ravines and vegetated riverbanks of the Magdalena, Cauca, and San Jorge basins. Known in the trade as the Steel Tetra for its metallic sheen, it was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912 from Bernal Creek near Honda and remains endemic to Colombia, where slow-flowing lowland streams bordered by riparian vegetation and woody debris define its natural world. Taxonomy & naming

Gephyrocharax melanocheir was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912 based on material from Bernal Creek near Honda, in the Magdalena River basin of Colombia. Eigenmann's publication, issued through Indiana University Studies, established the species as part of the genus Gephyrocharax — a name built from the Greek gephyra (bridge) and charax (a kind of marine fish, used in ichthyology as the root for many characin genera). The specific epithet melanocheir derives from the Greek melas (black) and cheir (hand or fin), referencing dark pigmentation on the fins.

FishBase and some modern sources place Gephyrocharax within the family Stevardiidae, a family erected to accommodate a clade of viviparous and ovo-viviparous characins and their relatives, sometimes previously grouped under the broader Characidae. The common name Steel Tetra reflects the species' coloration: a silvery to blue-grey body with a metallic sheen, the dark pigmentation of the fins giving the fish a crisp, polished appearance. Specific markings beyond the dark fin pigment are not well documented in accessible literature, and the species is not among the most frequently depicted in the aquarium hobby. Habitat

The Steel Tetra is endemic to Colombia, recorded from the Magdalena River basin (including the type locality at Bernal Creek near Honda), the Cauca River basin, and the San Jorge River basin — all tributaries or sub-systems of the greater Magdalena drainage that crosses the heart of the Colombian Andes and their foothills.

The IUCN assessment describes the species' preferred microhabitat as small ravines of less than 16 ft width and rivers of 16–49 ft width, characterized by slow or gentle flow, abundant riparian vegetation, and woody debris in the water. This is a lowland and foothill stream environment typical of the Colombian inter-Andean valleys: structurally complex, shaded by streamside forest, and biologically rich in aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. Substrate character and precise water-chemistry ranges for wild populations are not well documented, but the warm, tropical latitudes and small shaded stream setting suggest soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water.

Feeding

Gephyrocharax melanocheir is a predator with a trophic level of approximately 3.0, consistent with a diet focused on animal prey rather than plant matter or detritus. The IUCN assessment specifies the diet as aquatic insect larvae and terrestrial insects — organisms that are abundant in the leaf litter, woody debris, and overhanging vegetation typical of the stream habitats this species occupies.

In an aquarium setting the species would be expected to accept a range of meaty foods: small live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and small insect larvae would all be appropriate, supplemented by good-quality micro-pellets or fine flake with an animal-protein base. A diet weighted toward live and frozen foods is likely to maintain best condition given the species' natural prey preferences. Data on feeding behavior in captivity is limited, as the species is uncommon in the trade.

Mating

No specific studies on the mating behavior of Gephyrocharax melanocheir have been published in accessible literature, and the species is rarely bred in captivity. Within the genus Gephyrocharax, males of several species possess a modified anal-fin region with hook-like scales or an associated gland thought to facilitate sperm transfer directly to the female — a feature that distinguishes these fishes from simple egg-scatterers and links the genus to the broader Stevardiid radiation, which includes viviparous and internally fertilizing forms.

Whether G. melanocheir is strictly oviparous or exhibits internal fertilization has not been established in available literature. If it follows typical Gephyrocharax biology, courtship would involve male displays and close proximity spawning, likely in vegetated water. Until specific breeding observations are recorded, the mating system remains incompletely known.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Gephyrocharax melanocheir are essentially absent from the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature, and the species is not established in the aquarium trade in sufficient numbers for breeding husbandry to be well documented. By analogy with related small Gephyrocharax species, spawning would likely involve fine-leaved vegetation or a substrate offering some shelter, with eggs that may be adhesive; parental care is not expected based on the wider family pattern.

The small size of the species — maximum 1.5 in SL — suggests that fry, if produced, would be very small at hatching and would require the finest first foods: infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Breeders wishing to work with this species would be entering genuinely unexplored territory, and any successful captive-reproduction observations would be a useful contribution to knowledge of the genus.

In the aquarium

Gephyrocharax melanocheir is uncommon in the aquarium hobby; when available it is an interesting choice for the specialist keeper of small South American characins. Its insectivorous nature and origin in structurally complex, slow-to-gentle-flowing stream environments suggest a setup with significant plant coverage, driftwood and leaf litter, subdued lighting, and a calm water flow. A group of six or more individuals would be appropriate to allow natural social behavior in a small species accustomed to stream reaches with conspecifics.

Water conditions should reflect a warm lowland tropical stream: temperatures in the mid- to upper 20s Celsius, near-neutral to slightly soft and acidic water. The species' small size means it is vulnerable to aggressive or much-larger tankmates; appropriate companions would be similarly sized, peaceful characins, small corydoras, and other understory dwellers. As a predatory species it should not be kept with very small fish or invertebrates that fall within its prey size range. Information on long-term care, lifespan, and specific captive requirements is limited, reflecting the species' rarity in captivity.

Conservation

Gephyrocharax melanocheir is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment published in 2016 based on data collected in October 2014. The assessors — Jimenez-Segura and Villa-Navarro — noted that the population trend is unknown. The species is endemic to Colombia, confined to the Magdalena, Cauca, and San Jorge river basins, and its relatively broad distribution within that country underlies the LC assessment despite moderate threats.

The primary documented threat is livestock farming and ranching, which causes habitat degradation and loss in the coastal and lowland streams the species occupies through bank erosion, sedimentation, and riparian vegetation clearance. The IUCN assessment notes no conservation measures are currently in place specifically for this species. Ongoing land-use change in Colombia's inter-Andean valleys — agricultural intensification, cattle ranching expansion, and urbanization — could affect the slow, vegetated stream habitats the species requires, making future monitoring of local populations relevant even given the current LC status.
