Taxonomy & naming
Gephyrocharax sinuensis was described by George Dahl in 1964 from the upper Río Sinú system of northwestern Colombia. The genus Gephyrocharax belongs within the family Characidae and encompasses a group of small, slender characins distributed across river drainages in Central and South America. The valid name as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Gephyrocharax sinuensis Dahl, 1964, with the specific epithet sinuensis derived from the Río Sinú, the river system from which the type material was collected.
Taxonomic placement of Gephyrocharax has been refined over the years, with some workers assigning the genus and related forms to the subfamily Stevardiinae within Characidae. The epithet sinuensis straightforwardly references the type locality drainage. No subspecies are recognised. Given the limited collecting effort in the upper Sinú system, relationships within the genus and the full extent of this species' distribution remain incompletely resolved.
Morphology
Gephyrocharax sinuensis is a small, slender characid reaching approximately 2 in standard length. Like other members of the genus, it exhibits a key sexually dimorphic character in the pelvic fin of adult males: the unbranched pelvic-fin ray is hypertrophied and distinctly curved distally, a feature that distinguishes mature males from females and is shared, in varying degrees, across the genus Gephyrocharax.
Beyond this diagnostic character, the species shares the general build of small stevardiin-grade characins — a somewhat elongate, laterally compressed body with the typical characid complement of fins, including the small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. Precise meristic data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and detailed colour notes from live specimens have not been widely published.
Habitat
Gephyrocharax sinuensis is known from the upper Río Sinú system, restricted to the departments of Córdoba and Antioquia in northwestern Colombia. The Río Sinú drains the western flank of the Cordillera Occidental and flows northwest to the Caribbean. The upper reaches of the system, where this species occurs, consist of fast- to moderate-flowing hill streams and rivers in tropical lowland and foothill zones.
FishBase classifies the species as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical. Beyond this framework, detailed field observations on microhabitat use — substrate preferences, vegetation associations, water-chemistry parameters — have not been published for this species specifically. The Sinú drainage is under-surveyed by ichthyological standards, which contributes to the limited knowledge of the species' ecology and the Data Deficient IUCN assessment.
Feeding
No specific dietary studies have been published for Gephyrocharax sinuensis. Based on the feeding ecology of congeners and small characids generally in comparable Andean foothill drainages, the species is likely an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and similar items — along with organic particulates and possibly algae.
In the aquarium, small characins of this type typically accept a varied diet of appropriately sized prepared foods alongside live and frozen fare such as Daphnia, micro-worms, and newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the limited availability of this species in the hobby, practical feeding observations are scarce.
Mating
Gephyrocharax sinuensis has not been described in detail from breeding observations in either the field or captivity. The genus Gephyrocharax is characterised by the modified pelvic-fin ray of adult males, a structure that in related stevardiin characins functions in sperm transfer during spawning — these fishes deliver sperm in close contact with females rather than through broadcast spawning alone, though eggs are still scattered externally.
Males displaying the hypertrophied, distally curved unbranched pelvic-fin ray are presumed to use this structure during courtship and fertilisation, following the pattern documented in related genera. No parental care is expected; small characids of this type do not guard eggs or fry.
Breeding
No captive breeding accounts for Gephyrocharax sinuensis appear in the accessible literature, and the species is not established in the aquarium hobby. Based on the biology of closely related genera within the same subfamily, breeding is expected to follow the general stevardiine pattern: eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants or substrate, with fertilisation facilitated by close male–female contact mediated by the male's modified pelvic-fin structure.
Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among vegetation and no parental care would be consistent with related forms. Incubation period, fry size, and first-food requirements remain undocumented for this species. Any aquarist working with this fish would be in genuinely pioneering territory.
In the aquarium
Gephyrocharax sinuensis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. No commercial collection or trade in this species has been documented, and care information specific to it does not exist in hobby literature. The species' restriction to an under-surveyed Colombian river system means wild specimens are rarely encountered by collectors.
By analogy with other small, slender characids from Andean foothill drainages, a well-filtered aquarium with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in the tropical range (roughly 72–79 °F) and a diet of small live, frozen, and prepared foods would represent a reasonable starting point. A planted tank with some current and subdued lighting would likely suit the species' inferred riverine background. Any husbandry observations from specimens kept in captivity would constitute a meaningful contribution to knowledge of this little-known fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Gephyrocharax sinuensis as Data Deficient (DD) in 2014, a status that reflects genuine uncertainty rather than security — the absence of adequate survey data means that neither the population's size nor the trajectory of any threats can be quantified. The Río Sinú drainage in northwestern Colombia faces pressures common to Colombian river systems, including agricultural runoff, deforestation of riparian zones, and, in the middle and lower reaches, impacts from dam construction and cattle ranching.
The species' apparently restricted range in the upper Sinú confines it to a limited area of Córdoba and Antioquia. Without systematic surveys documenting current population status and distribution, it is not possible to determine whether the species is genuinely secure or facing undetected decline. Improved sampling of the upper Sinú system would be the most direct means of resolving this uncertainty and enabling a more meaningful Red List assessment.
