Gephyrocharax torresi is a small, laterally compressed characid from the río Cascajales basin, a tributary of the upper río Magdalena drainage in Colombia. Described in 2013, it is distinguished from its congeners by a vestigial or absent adipose fin and a striking fan-shaped arrangement of minute bony hooks on the branching pectoral-fin rays of adult males — a feature unusual in the genus. The species is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, meaning its conservation status cannot yet be determined from available evidence.

Taxonomy & naming

Gephyrocharax torresi was described in 2013 by Vanegas-Ríos, Azpelicueta, Mirande, and García Gonzales. The genus Gephyrocharax belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within the family Characidae, a lineage of small South and Central American characids found across Colombia, Panama, Bolivia, Trinidad, and Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name.

The species is diagnosed from all known congeners by two principal characters: the reduction or complete loss of the adipose fin, and the highly developed branching pattern of the lateral branched pectoral-fin ray in males, whose terminal filaments bear minute bony hooks and form a conspicuous fan-shaped structure. These male secondary sexual structures are the most reliable diagnostic features.

The specific epithet torresi honours Mauricio Torres of the Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia, in recognition of contributions to the study of the regional ichthyofauna.

Morphology

Gephyrocharax torresi is a small, slender fish with a strongly laterally compressed body. The holotype is a male of 1.5 in standard length; males reach approximately 1.5 in SL and females are slightly larger, reaching up to 1.5 in SL. FishBase records a maximum observed length of 1.5 in SL for females and 1.5 in SL for males, placing this among the smaller members of the genus.

Meristic data from the original description include a dorsal fin of ii, 7–8 branched rays; an anal fin with 4–5 unbranched rays followed by 26–30 branched rays; and a pectoral fin of i, 8–11 rays. The body is typical of the genus in its compressed, somewhat elongate form. The adipose fin is absent or vestigial, a character that immediately separates torresi from most congeners that retain a well-developed adipose.

The most striking feature of adult males is the fan-shaped elaboration of the lateral branched pectoral-fin ray, whose branches bear minute bony hooks in a pattern more complex than in related species. This modification is a secondary sexual character of unknown behavioural function, possibly involved in close-contact male–female interactions during spawning.

Habitat

The type locality is Caño Volador, a tributary of the río Sucio basin, itself part of the larger río Cascajales system within the río Magdalena drainage of Colombia, at an elevation of approximately 1109 ft. Paratypes were collected from the same watershed, and the species' known range is confined to this section of the Magdalena basin.

The genus Gephyrocharax is generally associated with freshwater rivers and streams in calmer environments — gentle currents, littoral margins, and vegetated reaches rather than swift, exposed rapids. Temperature, pH, and other physico-chemical data specific to the Caño Volador collecting sites are not available in the published sources reviewed for this article.

Feeding

No published dietary data specific to Gephyrocharax torresi are available. The genus as a whole is described in treatment literature as omnivorous, taking insects and plant matter, a feeding strategy consistent with the generalised omnivory typical of small Stevardiinae characids occupying stream margins and calm river reaches.

In the aquarium, congeners and ecologically similar small characids accept fine-grained prepared foods, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as micro-worms, Daphnia, and newly hatched brine shrimp. A varied diet is advisable for conditioning.

Mating

No specific mating observations for Gephyrocharax torresi have been published. The elaborately modified pectoral-fin ray in males — a fan of branching filaments bearing minute bony hooks — is almost certainly a secondary sexual character with a role in reproductive behaviour, possibly serving as a tactile or mechanical stimulus to the female during close-range courtship or amplexus-like contact spawning events documented in related Stevardiinae genera.

As a characid in a clade known for egg-scattering spawning with no parental care, torresi almost certainly follows the general pattern of open, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive egg deposition among fine-leaved vegetation or substrate, with the pair making brief contact before and during egg release. The bony hooks on the pectoral rays support the hypothesis of physical male–female contact during spawning, as seen in other hook-bearing characid groups.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Gephyrocharax torresi has not been documented in the available literature. Given its very recent description (2013), small size, and restriction to a single Colombian river system, the species has not entered the aquarium trade in appreciable numbers and consequently lacks a captive husbandry record.

By analogy with other small Stevardiinae, breeding in this species would be expected to involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or substrate with no parental investment. Adults would likely consume eggs if not separated. Water temperature and chemistry matching the upper Magdalena basin — warm, mid-elevation streams — would be the starting point for any captive-breeding attempt. Data on clutch size, incubation period, and larval development remain unpublished.

In the aquarium

Gephyrocharax torresi is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. No captive care records or husbandry guidelines have been published. As a small characid from a mid-elevation Colombian stream, it would in principle fit a species biotope aquarium replicating the calm, vegetated reaches of the upper Magdalena basin, kept with other small, non-aggressive species from that drainage.

The characteristic pectoral-fin fan of males would be the primary point of visual interest to a specialist keeper. Prospective hobbyists should source any specimen with care, verifying legal and ethical provenance, given the species' restricted wild range and Data Deficient status.

Conservation

Gephyrocharax torresi is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, a category assigned when insufficient information is available to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk. The designation does not imply the species is necessarily safe; it reflects an absence of adequate population, distribution, and threat data at the time of assessment.

The species' known range is narrow — the río Cascajales basin, a tributary system of the Magdalena — and the Magdalena drainage faces significant anthropogenic pressures including deforestation, agricultural run-off, and water extraction across much of its length. Whether torresi occurs beyond its type locality, how large its population is, and how it responds to habitat modification are questions that remain unanswered. More survey work in the upper Magdalena and its tributaries is needed to move the species out of the Data Deficient category.
