Gephyrocharax venezuelae is a small, slender characid from Venezuela, reaching roughly 1.5 in in standard length, that belongs to a genus of streamlined, benthopelagic tetras found across northern South America. Gephyrocharax venezuelae was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944. The genus Gephyrocharax is placed within the family Characidae, the vast and taxonomically complex family that encompasses the bulk of South American and African tetras. Placement within Characidae has been broadly stable, though FishBase has at times listed the genus under the subfamily Stevardiinae (family Stevardiidae in some arrangements); Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes remains the reference for the valid name.

The genus name Gephyrocharax combines the Greek gephyra (bridge) with charax (a kind of fish; the root of Characidae), an allusion to morphological or biogeographic connections among related genera. The specific epithet venezuelae is a Latin genitive meaning "of Venezuela," denoting the country of the type locality. No common name is standardised for this species, and it is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade under any name.

Tankmates should be other small, peaceful species of similar size.
