Hemibrycon antioquiae was described by Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., Taphorn P., Mancera-Rodriguez, and García-Alzate in 2013 in a paper published in Revista de Biología Tropical. The type locality is the Nare River drainage at approximately 6.274°N, 75.090°W in the department of Antioquia, Colombia, within the larger Magdalena River basin. The species is placed in the genus Hemibrycon, a diverse Neotropical genus of subfamily Stevardiinae within the family Characidae; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name as given above.
Hemibrycon is a genus of medium-sized streamlined characids distributed widely across South American river systems from Venezuela and Colombia south through Peru and Brazil. Several species co-occur in Colombian Andean drainages, and the recognition of H. antioquiae as a distinct species rests on a combination of morphometric and meristic characters alongside its diagnostic pigmentation. No synonyms or nomenclatural revisions have been recorded since the original description.
Morphology
Hemibrycon antioquiae is a slender, laterally compressed characid reaching up to 3.5 in standard length (SL), with a recorded size range of 2–3.5 in SL in the type series; FishBase records a maximum of 3.5 in SL. The body plan is typical of the genus: a fusiform profile suited to life in flowing water, with a relatively pointed snout and a forked caudal fin.
The most diagnostic external feature is a circular humeral spot with diffuse melanophores that extend from its dorsal margin toward the lateral stripe — a pattern described in the original description as distinguishing H. antioquiae from sympatric congeners. The lateral stripe itself is present, as is a caudal peduncle spot. Coloration in life has not been extensively documented in the published record, but the general Hemibrycon body plan presents as silvery with darker scale margins above the lateral line, giving a reticulate effect on the flanks.
Habitat
The species is known from the Nare River drainage, a tributary system of the Magdalena River in the department of Antioquia, Colombia, in Andean foothill terrain. Specimens were collected from streams with notably variable physicochemical conditions: water temperature 64–72 °F, pH 6.9–8.7, dissolved oxygen 4.2–9.1 mg/L, and conductivity 16.4–52.7 μS/cm, as recorded in the original description. Like other members of Hemibrycon, H. antioquiae is expected to occupy the water column of moderate-to-fast-flowing stream reaches rather than still or heavily silted backwaters. The Magdalena basin is one of Colombia's principal river systems, draining the Andean cordilleras before flowing north to the Caribbean, and its tributary network encompasses a wide altitudinal and ecological gradient. Precise habitat preferences within the Nare drainage beyond the type locality data have not been published.
Feeding

Its care requirements must be inferred from its natural habitat parameters: cool, well-oxygenated water in the 64–72 °F range, with a pH tolerance spanning nearly two units (6.9–8.7), suggesting considerable adaptability to water chemistry within that temperature window.
As a streamlined, active fish from flowing water, it would require good flow and high dissolved oxygen in captivity. A river-biotope setup with smooth stones, fine gravel, and moderate current would suit the habitat profile. Given the genus's feeding ecology, live and frozen invertebrate foods would be the appropriate dietary base. The species' non-establishment in the hobby means that any future captive maintenance would draw on general principles for Andean stream characids rather than accumulated hobbyist experience with the species itself.
Conservation
Hemibrycon antioquiae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its known range is restricted to the Nare River drainage of the Magdalena basin in Antioquia, Colombia — a geographically limited distribution within a river system that faces significant anthropogenic pressure. The combination of a restricted known range, a degraded catchment, and the absence of formal conservation assessment means that the conservation status of H. antioquiae remains uncertain.
