Hemibrycon cardalensis is a slender characid described in 2013 from a single small creek in the middle Magdalena River basin of Colombia. Known only from its type locality — El Cardal creek, a tributary of the Guatapé River — it represents the narrow endemism that characterises many Hemibrycon species scattered across the Andean foothills. Reaching just under 3 in standard length, it is a modestly sized schooling fish whose biology has barely been studied outside the original species account.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon cardalensis was described by Román-Valencia, Ruiz-C., Taphorn P., Mancera-Rodriguez, and García-Alzate in 2013, based on material collected from El Cardal creek, a tributary of the Guatapé River in the middle Magdalena River basin, Colombia. The holotype is catalogued as IUQ 2658. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name, and the species is placed within the large South American subfamily Stevardiinae of the family Characidae.

The genus Hemibrycon comprises small to medium characids distributed across Andean and sub-Andean drainages from Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Members of the genus are distinguished from allied genera by combinations of tooth morphology, lateral-line scale counts, and other meristic characters. H. cardalensis is distinguished within the genus principally by scale counts, body proportions, and the pattern of the vertical humeral spot, which arises from the third scale of the lateral line in this species.

The specific epithet cardalensis is a Latinised place name, formed with the suffix -ensis (from Latin, meaning 'belonging to' or 'from'), and refers directly to El Cardal creek, the type and only known locality.

Morphology

Hemibrycon cardalensis is a slender, fusiform characid. The holotype measured 3 in standard length, and the largest specimen recorded reaches approximately 3.5 in total length (about 3.5 in SL per FishBase). Body depth is shallow relative to length, with a mean body depth of roughly 30.5% of standard length — a proportionately slim build typical for the more stream-adapted members of the genus.

A distinctive vertical humeral spot is present, originating from the third scale of the lateral line and extending across several scale rows — a character used in the original description to separate this species from close relatives. Like other Hemibrycon, the species bears the basic characid bauplan: a terminal mouth with small, multi-cusped teeth, an adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and a complete lateral line. Overall colouration details from wild specimens are not extensively documented beyond the original description.

Males bear 12 to 14 large hooks on the pelvic and anal-fin rays, a secondary sexual character shared with many characids and indicative of the spawning behaviour typical of the genus. This feature also provides a straightforward means of sexing mature specimens in hand.

Habitat

The species is known only from El Cardal creek, a small tributary of the Guatapé River within the middle Magdalena River basin of Antioquia department, Colombia. The Guatapé drains Andean foothills before joining the Magdalena system, and small Andean-foothill streams such as El Cardal typically run clear and fast over rocky or gravelly substrates, with riparian vegetation providing shading and terrestrial invertebrate input.

Water conditions recorded at the type locality include a temperature of 72 °F and a pH of 8.7 — a notably alkaline reading, suggesting the creek drains mineralised substrate, possibly limestone-influenced geology within the Andes. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, indicating it occupies the lower to mid water column in flowing freshwater. Beyond the original species account, detailed habitat characterisation — substrate type, current speed, plant cover, seasonality — has not been published.

The exclusive restriction to a single small creek makes H. cardalensis one of many Hemibrycon species with a very narrow geographic range. Whether it is genuinely confined to this drainage, or merely uncollected elsewhere in the Guatapé system, remains an open question.

Feeding

No published dietary study exists for Hemibrycon cardalensis specifically, and diet is not addressed in the original description. By analogy with other Hemibrycon species from Andean-foothill streams, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, and algae or detritus.

In the aquarium, closely related Hemibrycon are typically undemanding feeders that accept small flake and pellet foods, frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, and occasional live food. If specimens of H. cardalensis were available in the hobby, a diet along these lines would be reasonable, supplemented with occasional vegetable matter.

Mating

Hemibrycon cardalensis has not been studied in courtship or mating in the wild. The presence of pronounced hooks on the pelvic and anal-fin rays of males — 12 to 14 large hooks recorded in the original description — is consistent with the egg-scattering reproductive mode documented across the genus and family. In many characids, these fin hooks interlock with the female's fin rays during spawning, facilitating close positioning and efficient fertilisation.

Based on the biology of congeners, males are expected to pursue females actively in open water or near fine-leaved vegetation, with fertilisation external and no pair bond forming. No behavioural observations from captivity or the field have been published for this species.

Breeding

No breeding has been documented for Hemibrycon cardalensis in captivity or observed in the wild. By extension from the reproductive biology of the broader genus, this species is expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care: spawning would likely occur in or near vegetation, with adhesive eggs deposited among plant material or over substrate and subsequently abandoned.

The water conditions at the type locality — 72 °F and pH 8.7 — suggest that if the species were cultured, somewhat cooler, moderately alkaline water would be appropriate for conditioning and breeding. Incubation period and fry requirements are unknown. Given the species' apparent restriction to a single locality and its absence from the aquarium trade, practical breeding data are unlikely to emerge soon.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon cardalensis is not known to be in the aquarium hobby. No commercial collections from the type locality have been reported, and the species does not appear in hobbyist literature. Its restricted range and the logistical difficulty of collecting from an obscure Andean foothill stream in Colombia mean that specimens are effectively unavailable.

Should the species ever enter the trade, the water conditions from its type locality — 72 °F and pH 8.7 — point toward a preference for cooler, alkaline, moderately hard water rather than the soft-acid conditions often associated with Amazonian tetras. A well-oxygenated, flowing setup would be consistent with its stream origin. Being a Hemibrycon, it would likely be best kept in a school with adequate swimming space and ample current.

Conservation

Hemibrycon cardalensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. Its known range is confined to a single small creek, making it inherently vulnerable to any local disturbance: water abstraction, agricultural runoff, sedimentation from deforestation, or changes to the Guatapé River catchment could affect the entire known population.

The middle Magdalena basin of Colombia has experienced extensive habitat modification from agriculture, cattle ranching, and human settlement. Small Andean tributaries are disproportionately exposed to these pressures because their entire watershed can be altered quickly. Without a formal range survey and population assessment, the true conservation situation of H. cardalensis remains unknown. Its description in 2013 is also recent enough that it may simply not yet have been considered for formal Red List evaluation. Further field surveys within the Guatapé system would clarify whether the species occupies additional drainages or is genuinely as restricted as current records suggest.
