Taxonomy & naming
Hemibrycon cairoensis was described by César Román-Valencia and Diego Arcila-Mesa in 2009 as one of two new species of Hemibrycon from the Magdalena River drainage of Colombia, published in the journal Animal Biodiversity and Conservation (32(2): 77–87). The type locality is El Cairo, in the Risaralda department of western Colombia, from which the specific epithet is drawn. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Hemibrycon cairoensis Román-Valencia & Arcila-Mesa, 2009 as the valid name.
The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the family Characidae (sensu the Catalog of Fishes), a vast, predominantly Neotropical clade. FishBase places the species in the subfamily Stevardiidae, reflecting ongoing revision of higher-level characid systematics, but the family assignment of Characidae applies here as the accepted Catalog-level classification. Hemibrycon is characterised by a combination of features including a complete lateral line, presence of a supraorbital bone, and — in males of many species — tiny ossified hooks on the fin rays, a secondary sexual character shared by H. cairoensis.
Morphology
Hemibrycon cairoensis reaches a maximum known standard length of 3.5 in SL, placing it among the mid-sized members of the genus. The body plan is the typical elongate, laterally compressed form of Hemibrycon: a streamlined profile suited to moving water, with a complete lateral line bearing 43–46 pored scales. Vertebral count is 39–40, consistent with the broader genus.
Males are distinguished from females by the presence of small hooks on the rays of the anal, pelvic, pectoral, and dorsal fins — a widely shared secondary sexual character in many characid lineages that is thought to function in courtship and spawning. Coloration in life is not described in detail in the available sources; like many Hemibrycon, the species is likely silvery with a dark lateral stripe or humeral spot, but specific chromatic details await thorough in-life documentation.
Habitat
The type series was collected from Los Ramírez Creek and Itálica Creek, both tributaries within the Risaralda River system of the upper Cauca drainage in the Colombian Andes. These streams carry brown, tannin-stained water over a substrate of stones and sand, at elevations consistent with the cool montane zone of the western Andean slopes.
Measured conditions at the collection sites were notably cool (65–69 °F) with a surprisingly elevated pH of around 8 and high dissolved oxygen (7.6–9.7 mg/l), reflecting fast-flowing, well-aerated montane stream conditions. This combination of dark water and near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH is unusual and may reflect local geology. The species has not been recorded outside this immediate drainage, making its known range extremely restricted.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study is available for Hemibrycon cairoensis. Within the genus Hemibrycon, species are generally opportunistic omnivores with a strong tendency toward invertivory: aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, and incidental plant matter are typical gut-content items across members of the genus in Andean and sub-Andean streams.
Given the fast, clear-to-brown stream habitat and the size range of H. cairoensis, a diet centred on drifting invertebrates and surface-fallen insects is the most parsimonious inference. In the aquarium, congeners and similarly shaped Andean characids generally accept fine-ground flake and pellets alongside frozen or live small invertebrates such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and artemia nauplii.
Mating
No direct observations of mating behaviour have been published for Hemibrycon cairoensis. The genus belongs to a broad clade of characids characterised by egg-scattering open spawning with no parental investment. The fin-ray hooks present in males of H. cairoensis are a secondary sexual character widely interpreted in the literature as facilitating close contact between males and females during spawning, perhaps assisting in coordinating egg and sperm release among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or in current.
As with most Andean stream characids, spawning is likely triggered by seasonal cues — temperature shifts and water-level changes associated with rainfall patterns in the Andes — though no field data on reproductive seasonality exist for this species specifically.
Breeding
Hemibrycon cairoensis has not been bred in captivity in any documented account, and breeding biology in the wild remains undescribed. By analogy with the genus and the subfamily, spawning is expected to involve egg-scattering over substrate or among aquatic plants, with small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and relatively short incubation times in well-oxygenated water.
The cool water temperatures at the type locality (64–68 °F) are well below the range used for most tropical characid breeding programmes, suggesting that successful captive breeding would require cooler conditions than are standard for tetra-keeping. Data remain too sparse to give practical guidance, and the species is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon cairoensis is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. It is known only from a small scientific collection at its type locality and has not been bred or studied in captivity. The information in this section is therefore necessarily inferential, based on the genus and habitat.
The cool, well-oxygenated conditions of its native streams — 64–68 °F, neutral to slightly alkaline pH, high dissolved oxygen — suggest it would require a species tank with robust aeration, a moderate to strong current, and temperatures considerably lower than typical tropical setups. Any Andean Hemibrycon requires careful attention to water quality and temperature stability; the species is not suitable as a general community fish and would be a specialist project for aquarists with experience keeping cool-water mountain stream species.
Conservation
Hemibrycon cairoensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessment date 10 October 2014, global assessment version 2025-2). The Data Deficient classification reflects that insufficient information exists to determine whether the species meets the criteria for a threatened category — not that it is necessarily secure. Its known distribution is limited to two creek systems in a single river basin in the Colombian Andes, a region subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water diversion affecting montane streams.
Andean freshwater fish diversity is increasingly recognised as threatened by land-use change and climate-driven shifts in water temperature and seasonal flow regimes. A species known from only two collecting localities in a restricted elevation band is inherently vulnerable to local disturbance. The appropriate response to a Data Deficient listing for a range-restricted Andean stream fish is not reassurance but a call for targeted surveys to clarify abundance, range extent, and habitat condition.
