Hemibrycon brevispini is a small characid endemic to La Venada Creek in the upper Cauca River drainage of Colombia's Quindío department, one of many stream-dwelling tetras of the Andean foothills. Known only from this single tributary of the Santo Domingo River system, it was described in 2009 and remains poorly documented in the literature; the IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2014, a reflection of how little is known about its population size or ecology beyond the type locality.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon brevispini was formally described by Román-Valencia and Arcila-Mesa in 2009. The genus Hemibrycon is a diverse New World characid group distributed across Andean and trans-Andean river drainages in South America, with greatest diversity in Colombia and Ecuador. Species of Hemibrycon are generally small, silvery tetras of fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams and can be difficult to distinguish from one another without careful examination of meristic counts and fin morphology.

The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Hemibrycon brevispini Román-Valencia & Arcila-Mesa, 2009. The type locality is La Venada Creek, a tributary of the Santo Domingo River, itself part of the upper Cauca River drainage in Quindío department, Colombia. The species has no widely accepted common name in English or Spanish aquarium literature.

Morphology

Hemibrycon brevispini reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, placing it among the mid-sized members of its genus. Like other Hemibrycon, it is a streamlined, laterally compressed characid with a silvery body, a forked tail, and the adipose fin characteristic of the family. The species name derives from the Latin brevi (short) and spini (hook or spine), referring to tiny hooks present on the fins — a feature shared with several related species and often associated with males.

Fin-hook counts and other meristic characters are typically used to distinguish Hemibrycon species from one another; without these detailed counts, field identification from photographs alone is unreliable. Data on external coloration, body proportions, and detailed scale counts for H. brevispini are sparse in the accessible secondary literature.

Habitat

Hemibrycon brevispini is known from La Venada Creek in the Quindío–Santo Domingo River system, upper Cauca River drainage, Quindío department, Colombia. This is a clear-water Andean foothill stream at the type locality. Water chemistry measurements at the site document a cool environment: temperature range 65–76 °F (mean near 71 °F at the type locality), pH 5.8–8.0 (6.9 at the type-locality measurement point), dissolved oxygen 5–8 mg/L, and conductivity 301–367 µS/cm (mean approximately 334 µS/cm). These figures describe clean, well-oxygenated, low-to-moderate conductivity running water, consistent with a clear Andean piedmont creek.

The Quindío River region encompasses coffee-growing slopes of the Western Andes and their Pacific-draining tributaries. Fast, clear, cool mountain streams in this zone typically flow over gravel and rock substrates with varying amounts of riparian vegetation shading the channel. Whether H. brevispini occurs beyond La Venada Creek into other tributaries of the Santo Domingo or Quindío system has not been confirmed in the available literature.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study specific to Hemibrycon brevispini has been published in the accessible literature. A peer-reviewed study by Taphorn and colleagues examined the trophic and reproductive ecology of this species from La Venada Creek over the period July 2011 to November 2012, providing field data on condition factor and life-history traits of the endemic population; detailed dietary composition results from that work are not reproduced in available secondary sources.

Based on the ecology of Hemibrycon as a genus, the species is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore taking invertebrates, small aquatic insects, and plant or algal material in proportion to seasonal availability. Cool, clear Andean streams with good oxygen levels support diverse aquatic insect communities, and Hemibrycon species in comparable habitats elsewhere in Colombia have been documented as generalist drift-feeders.

Mating

No specific observations on the mating behaviour of Hemibrycon brevispini in the wild or in captivity are available in the accessible secondary literature. Hemibrycon species are generally assumed to follow the characid pattern of egg-scattering open spawning, with males and females releasing gametes among fine-leaved vegetation or submerged substrate without forming lasting pair bonds or exhibiting territorial behaviour.

The fin hooks noted in the species name may be secondary sexual characters present in males, as is common across several Hemibrycon and allied characid species, where such hooks are thought to play a role in physical contact during spawning. The Taphorn et al. study covers reproductive ecology of H. brevispini at the type locality, but detailed results are not available in the secondary sources consulted.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Hemibrycon brevispini are documented in the hobby literature. The species has not entered aquarium commerce to any documented degree, meaning captive-breeding data are essentially absent. Based on the general biology of the genus, breeding would be expected to follow the pattern typical of stream-dwelling characids: egg-scattering with no parental care, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or substrate, and larvae requiring very small first foods after yolk-sac absorption.

Given the cool water temperatures at the type locality (65–76 °F), any breeding attempt would likely call for cooler conditions than are standard for tropical tetras. Data on clutch size, incubation period, and larval development are not available.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon brevispini does not appear in the mainstream aquarium trade and is not documented as a species kept in home aquaria. Its restricted wild range, the absence of captive-breeding records, and the lack of any common name all point to a species that has not been established in the hobby. Any future specimens would require cool, clean, well-oxygenated water in the 64–75 °F range to reflect the type-locality conditions, good current, and a diet of small invertebrates.

The species should be considered a scientific-interest fish rather than a hobby fish at this time. Data on its behaviour, aggression, compatibility, and captive requirements are sparse.

Conservation

Hemibrycon brevispini was assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List in October 2014. A Data Deficient listing does not mean the species is not at risk; it means that the available information is insufficient to assess extinction risk against IUCN criteria. Given that the species is known from a single creek in the Quindío River system, any habitat degradation — deforestation, agricultural run-off from the coffee-growing slopes, water extraction, or stream channelisation — in that limited catchment could have disproportionate effects on the population.

The upper Cauca River drainage in Quindío department is heavily modified by agriculture and human settlement. Stream-endemic Andean characids with extremely small ranges are among the most vulnerable freshwater fishes in South America, and the combination of a tiny known distribution and very limited baseline population data makes H. brevispini a species that warrants precautionary attention even in the absence of a formal threatened category.
