Hemibrycon boquiae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913 from material collected in the Quindío River drainage, Upper Cauca, Colombia. Eigenmann's original notes recorded some uncertainty about generic placement — the type description hedged between Bryconamericus and Hemibrycon — but Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) lists the valid name as Hemibrycon boquiae (Eigenmann, 1913), with the parenthetical authority reflecting a placement in a genus other than the one in which it was first described. The type locality is the Boquía stream system, a tributary of the Quindío River within the Upper Cauca drainage of Colombia.
Hemibrycon is a genus of medium-sized, stream-dwelling characids distributed across northwestern and Andean South America. The genus belongs to the family Characidae and has historically been placed within the subfamily Stevardiinae, though higher-level characid taxonomy continues to be revised. Species of Hemibrycon are broadly similar in form — slender, silvery, and laterally compressed — and are differentiated by meristic counts, scale rows, and details of the dentition and lateral-line scale counts. The specific epithet boquiae refers to the Boquía stream, the locality from which the type material was collected.
Morphology
Hemibrycon boquiae is a slender, laterally compressed characid with the typical body plan of the genus: a moderately elongate profile, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and a forked tail. The dentition is characid-typical, with multi-cusped premaxillary and dentary teeth suited to a mixed invertebrate and plant-material diet. Scales are cycloid and the lateral line is complete.
Studies from the Quindío River drainage report that males reach sexual maturity at around 2 in standard length (SL) and females at approximately 2.5 in SL, giving a rough indication of adult size. The species displays the sexual size dimorphism common in Hemibrycon, with females tending to be larger and deeper-bodied when ripe. Coloration in preserved material is silvery, with a dark lateral stripe that is characteristic of many congeners; live coloration data for this species are limited in the published literature.
Habitat
Hemibrycon boquiae occurs in the Quindío River drainage of the Upper Cauca basin in the Colombian Andes, including the Boquía stream that lends the species its name. This is an Andean foothill and montane river system characterised by clear, fast-flowing streams with rocky or gravelly substrates. FishBase lists the species' distribution as the Alto Cauca of Colombia.
Water chemistry data recorded for Hemibrycon species in the nearby Upper Magdalena basin — a geographically related Andean system — give a sense of the conditions likely tolerated by Alto Cauca congeners: temperatures roughly 60–82 °F, pH near neutral to slightly alkaline (around 6.9 or above), and dissolved oxygen in the range of 4.3–7.9 mg/l. These figures reflect well-oxygenated, cool-to-warm Andean stream conditions. H. boquiae is a freshwater, tropical-zone species according to FishBase, and its stream habitat is subject to seasonal flow variation driven by Andean rainfall patterns.
Feeding
A study by Román Valencia and colleagues (2008) analysed the stomach contents of H. boquiae from the Quindío River drainage and found a strongly insectivorous diet: insects made up 66.63% of the diet by volume, with autochthonous (aquatic-origin) insects dominating at 62.95% of total ingesta. Plant material and algae also featured — Chlorophyceae green algae at 5.88% and Xanthophyceae at 2.78%, with vegetable remains contributing a further 4.02%. Nematodes were found in 2.16% of the diet.
This diet profile is consistent with the feeding ecology of Andean stream characids more broadly: insect larvae, surface-fallen terrestrial insects, periphytic algae, and other small invertebrates. The dominance of aquatic insects suggests that H. boquiae feeds primarily at or near the substrate and in the water column on drifting invertebrates rather than as a surface feeder. Its role in the local food web is that of a mid-level invertivore in a productive Andean stream ecosystem.
Mating
Hemibrycon boquiae is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, consistent with the reproductive strategy documented across the family Characidae. Like other characids it deposits adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over gravel, and the adults take no further interest in the spawn.
The Román Valencia et al. (2008) study documented that reproduction in H. boquiae is seasonal, with breeding concentrated in the dry season from July through September in the Quindío River drainage. This pattern is common in Andean and Colombian stream fish, where seasonal hydrology — reduced flow and increased water temperature and clarity during the dry season — cues spawning activity. The differing size at sexual maturity between sexes (males maturing at smaller size than females) suggests that female body size is important for fecundity, as is typical in egg-scattering characids.
Breeding
No captive-breeding accounts for Hemibrycon boquiae appear in the hobbyist literature, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade. Extrapolating from closely related Andean Hemibrycon species, breeding in the wild is expected to involve the scattering of small, adhesive eggs among vegetation or over substrate during the July–September dry-season window documented for this species.
Incubation periods and fry development data have not been published specifically for H. boquiae. In the wild, the seasonal timing of reproduction means that fry hatch and grow during the late dry season and early wet season, when invertebrate prey becomes more abundant. Should the species become available to aquarists, the approach used for other Andean characids — a cool, well-oxygenated tank, a slight drop in temperature to simulate the dry season, and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops — would likely be a starting point. Data are otherwise sparse.
In the aquarium
Hemibrycon boquiae is not currently a species of the aquarium hobby and is rarely if ever available in the ornamental-fish trade. Its natural habitat — clear, fast-flowing, cool Andean streams — would require replication in any serious attempt at maintenance: good oxygenation, moderate current, cool temperatures (reflecting the Andean foothill climate of the Quindío drainage), and a fine-gravel substrate. The species is likely best suited to a species tank or a community with other Andean stream fishes of similar size.
Given its documented diet of aquatic insects and plant material, captive feeding on a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with algae-based foods would be appropriate. The seasonal breeding cue (dry season, July–September) suggests that temperature manipulation and simulated seasonal cycles could induce spawning if the species were ever maintained in captivity. As a wild-caught Andean specialist, it would require water of moderate quality and should not be expected to tolerate the warmer, softer water typically used for Amazonian tetras.
Conservation
Hemibrycon boquiae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no formal assessment was found in current records. The species is endemic to the Quindío River drainage of the Upper Cauca basin in Colombia — a relatively restricted range within the heavily modified Cauca valley landscape. The Upper Cauca and its tributaries have been subject to decades of agricultural intensification, habitat alteration, and water quality degradation associated with coffee cultivation, sugar-cane farming, and urban development in the Quindío and Valle del Cauca departments.
The restricted distribution of H. boquiae, combined with ongoing pressures on its native stream habitat, suggests that the species warrants formal evaluation. Colombian Andean stream fish diversity is high and many endemics remain data-deficient with respect to population status. Without a current IUCN assessment, the precautionary view is that habitat protection for the Quindío River drainage — including riparian buffer zones and water-quality management — is the most important conservation measure for this and other endemic stream fishes of the region.
