Hemibrycon beni is a slender, silver-bodied characin collected by the Mulford Biological Exploration from the tributaries of the upper Beni drainage in Bolivia and formally described by Pearson in 1924. It inhabits the fast-flowing rivers and streams of the Madeira basin — the Mamoré, Beni, and Madre de Dios drainages — in a region where the Andes meet the Amazonian lowland. Small and active, it represents a genus that broadly occupies Andean and sub-Andean South American rivers, yet has made only limited inroads into the main Amazon basin itself.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon beni was described by Pearson in 1924 from specimens collected during the Mulford Biological Exploration of Bolivia. The type locality is recorded as Espia and río Colorado, lower Bopi, Bolivia — streams draining into the Beni system of the upper Madeira basin. The name beni refers to that river drainage. The Plazi TreatmentBank (treatment 03FC9766FFE8D66AFEA4F9B1FA0F7A94) preserves the original description text from Pearson's account.

The genus Hemibrycon belongs to the large characid subfamily Stevardiinae and ranges widely across Andean piedmont and sub-Andean rivers from Venezuela to Bolivia. Dagosta and de Pinna (2019) noted that Hemibrycon is cosmopolitan in South America but shows poor representation within the core Amazon basin, a pattern they interpreted as reflecting relatively recent colonisation of Amazonian margins from adjacent basins via secondary dispersal events rather than in-basin diversification. H. beni sits at the western edge of the Madeira basin range, where that Andean origin is most apparent.

Morphology

Hemibrycon beni is a small, fusiform characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in, as reported in FishBase. Like other members of the genus it has a moderately compressed body, a complete lateral line, and the small adipose fin characteristic of characids. Meristic data from FishBase record 15–19 anal soft rays and a vertebral count of 38–39, figures consistent with other Hemibrycon species of the Andean piedmont.

The general coloration is silvery, typical of fast-water characins that rely on schooling and speed rather than cryptic patterning. A darker lateral stripe or midlateral pigmentation is characteristic of Hemibrycon species generally; available descriptions do not provide finer colour details specific to H. beni beyond what is shared with congeners. Sexual dimorphism has not been well characterised in the literature.

Habitat

In the wild, Hemibrycon beni occupies rivers and streams of the Madeira basin in Bolivia, specifically the Mamoré, Beni, and Madre de Dios drainages that drain the eastern Andean slopes and piedmont. These are typically clear to slightly turbid, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing waters with rocky or sandy substrates — the sub-Andean rivers that carry Andean sediment loads into the Amazonian lowland.

Dagosta and de Pinna (2019) placed H. beni within a lowland South American distributional pattern tied to the Madeira basin margins, consistent with an origin from piedmont ancestral stock. The rivers it inhabits are characterised by seasonal fluctuations in water level linked to Andean rainfall. Fine-grained habitat data for H. beni specifically are sparse in the published literature.

Feeding

Hemibrycon species as a group are generalised omnivores taking invertebrates, algae, and small fishes depending on availability. Work on the closely related Hemibrycon dentatus in a tropical mountain river (ResearchGate, 2013) showed that diet composition in Hemibrycon varies seasonally alongside reproductive condition, with invertebrate prey dominating during active feeding phases.

Specific diet data for H. beni are not documented in the published sources available, but the broader Hemibrycon literature suggests an insectivorous to omnivorous diet focused on aquatic invertebrates, surface insects, and plant matter. In the aquarium, congeners accept flake, small pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia and bloodworm without difficulty.

Mating

Hemibrycon species are egg-scattering characins that do not form pair bonds or provide parental care. Reproductive seasonality in the genus has been linked to hydrology: the study of H. dentatus found peak reproductive activity correlated with high-water periods driven by elevated rainfall, a pattern common across South American characins whose breeding cues follow seasonal river-level changes.

Males and females of schooling characins like Hemibrycon typically aggregate near fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged structure during spawning events. Courtship is brief and involves the male pursuing the female through the water column before eggs and milt are released simultaneously. No courtship structures or territorial displays have been documented for H. beni specifically.

Breeding

Like all Hemibrycon, H. beni is presumed to be an open, egg-scattering spawner that deposits small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, with no subsequent parental care. Adults do not guard or attend eggs and will readily consume them if left in the spawning environment.

Hemibrycon beni has not been documented in the aquarium breeding literature, and specific data on clutch size, incubation temperature, or rearing requirements are not available for this species. By analogy with other small Andean characins, fry would be expected to require very fine-particulate first foods in the early days after hatching. The species is not established in the hobby trade, and captive-breeding accounts are absent from known sources.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon beni is not an established aquarium fish. It is a scientifically collected species described from Bolivian museum specimens and is not known to be commercially available in the ornamental trade. Hobbyists keeping congeners such as H. surinamensis or other sub-Andean Hemibrycon species report that the genus is generally hardy, active, and peaceful enough for a community setting with similarly sized fish.

Should H. beni become available, its sub-Andean origins suggest it would prefer cooler, well-oxygenated, slightly acid to neutral water with strong filtration and moderate current — the riverine conditions of the Beni piedmont. A long tank with open swimming space and a planted perimeter would suit a schooling species of this type. There is no aquarium-specific care record for this species at this time.

Conservation

Hemibrycon beni is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with FishBase recording this assessment from 2014. The species occupies a relatively broad distributional footprint within the Madeira basin — the Mamoré, Beni, and Madre de Dios drainages of Bolivia — which provides some buffer against local habitat pressures, consistent with an LC designation.

The Madeira basin and its Andean tributaries do face ongoing threats from hydroelectric development, mining, deforestation of Andean catchments, and altered sediment and water regimes. These pressures affect the sub-Andean fish communities broadly. H. beni's specific vulnerability to these pressures is not well quantified, and the species appears to have no dedicated conservation programme. Monitoring of Andean piedmont fish communities in Bolivia, where H. beni was first described, remains important for tracking any future change in status.
