Hemigrammus elegans is a small, slender characid from the Amazon and Tapajós basins of Brazil and the Apure and Aguaro systems of Venezuela, where it darts through the shadowed mid-water of blackwater and clearwater streams among fine-leaved vegetation. Its modest size — under 1.5 in standard length — is offset by a warm reddish-orange flush along the flanks that gives the species its appeal in planted community aquaria. Despite broad occurrence across Amazonia and the Orinoco tributaries, relatively little detailed biology has been documented in the literature, and the species carries a Data Deficient assessment on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus elegans was described by Franz Steindachner in 1882, making it one of the earlier members of a genus that now contains well over 50 valid species. Because the original description was based on specimens collected in South America and Steindachner was describing a new species, the authority is placed in parentheses — (Steindachner, 1882) — indicating that the species has been moved from the original genus placement since first description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hemigrammus elegans (Steindachner, 1882); the placement in Hemigrammus is current.

Hemigrammus is a large genus within the family Characidae, the characins — the dominant freshwater fish group across tropical South America and Africa. The genus is characterised primarily by the presence of scales on the lower lobe of the caudal fin, a feature distinguishing it from the otherwise similar Hyphessobrycon. Within Hemigrammus, H. elegans belongs to a loose assemblage of small, reddish or orange-tinted tetras distributed across the northern and central Amazon basin. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Hemigrammus elegans is a slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in, with most individuals encountered somewhat shorter, around 1.5 in. The body profile is typical of the genus: a gently arched dorsal line, a nearly straight ventral line, a moderately forked caudal fin, and the scaled lower caudal lobe that distinguishes Hemigrammus from related genera.

The coloration is the species' defining feature. The flanks carry a warm reddish-orange to coppery flush, which can intensify noticeably in good condition and under appropriate lighting. A faint lateral stripe may be visible toward the caudal peduncle. The fins are largely hyaline. Colouration varies with light, health, and water conditions; fish kept in soft, slightly acidic water over a dark substrate in low light tend to display richer tones than those in hard, brightly lit aquaria.

Habitat

Hemigrammus elegans occurs across two major South American drainage systems: the Amazon basin and the Tapajós River basin in Brazil, and the Apure and Aguaro river basins in Venezuela. This distribution spans both the eastern Amazon lowlands and Orinoco tributaries, suggesting a species tolerant of the broadly similar soft-water, warm-water conditions shared across these systems.

In its natural range the species inhabits still to slow-moving freshwater, typically among aquatic vegetation in stream margins, flooded forest edges, and quiet backwaters. Water conditions in these habitats are characteristically warm — roughly 73–81 °F — and soft to moderately soft, often slightly acidic to neutral in pH, with low conductivity. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, occupying the lower to mid water column, and it is likely a schooling fish in the wild as is typical for small characids of this type.

Feeding

Like other small Hemigrammus, H. elegans is an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, subsisting on small invertebrates — zooplankton, tiny insect larvae, worms, and microcrustaceans — together with algal cells and organic detritus. The mouth is small and the species is adapted to feeding on fine prey items in the water column.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of prepared foods including high-quality micro pellets and finely crushed flake, and responds well to supplementation with live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, Cyclops, and micro worms. Feeding small amounts multiple times daily suits the species better than a single large feeding and helps maintain condition and colour.

Mating

Hemigrammus elegans is an egg-scattering spawner in the typical characid fashion, with no pair bond formation and no parental care. Under natural conditions spawning is likely triggered by seasonal cues including rainfall and changes in water chemistry, though in the aquarium it can be induced year-round by manipulating water conditions.

Males likely court females through active pursuit and brief display. Spawning occurs over fine-leaved vegetation or among roots and leaf litter, with the pair releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle among the substrate or cling to plant surfaces. The species' type locality in Amazonian soft-water systems suggests that very soft, slightly acidic water is the cue most likely to stimulate spawning, consistent with reports from hobbyist sources that breeding requires specific soft-water conditions.

Breeding

Breeding Hemigrammus elegans follows the standard small-tetra protocol, though the species is noted as moderately challenging compared with more forgiving tetras, primarily because spawning appears to require soft, slightly acidic water matching the fish's Amazonian origins. A dedicated spawning tank of modest size — around 17.5 in is adequate — set up with very soft water (conductivity below 100 µS/cm), pH 5.5–6.8, and a temperature in the mid-to-upper end of the range (79–82 °F) provides the most reliable results.

Spawning mops or clumps of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss serve as egg-deposit sites. The adults scatter small adhesive eggs among the plants and must be removed promptly to prevent egg predation, as there is no parental care. Eggs typically hatch within 24–48 hours at breeding temperatures; the fry become free-swimming a few days later and require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is gradual.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus elegans is a peaceful, sociable tetra well suited to community aquaria containing other small, non-aggressive fish. As with most schooling characids it is best kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals; a proper school reduces shyness, encourages natural behaviour, and allows the reddish colouration to show at its best when fish are relaxed and competing mildly with one another.

The species does best in soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at 73–81 °F, conditions that mirror its Amazonian natural range. A well-planted tank with some open swimming space, gentle filtration, low to moderate lighting, and a dark substrate gives the fish confidence and enhances its colour. Hard, alkaline tap water may be tolerated but is not ideal; a reverse-osmosis or rainwater blend suits the fish well. It is compatible with other small tetras, peaceful rasboras, dwarf cichlids, small corydoras, and similar community fish. Regular partial water changes and stable conditions are the main requirements for long-term health.

Conservation

Hemigrammus elegans is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 16 March 2021. The Data Deficient designation indicates that insufficient information is available to make a direct or indirect assessment of its extinction risk — not that the species is necessarily in good standing, but that population data are too sparse to evaluate. The species' apparently wide distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco drainages of Brazil and Venezuela suggests it is not immediately threatened, but the lack of systematic population surveys means this inference is tentative.

The Amazon and Orinoco basins face ongoing habitat pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water extraction, factors that affect many small characids concurrently. As a small, schooling fish with no commercial fishery value beyond the ornamental trade, H. elegans is unlikely to be a primary target of collection pressure. Aquarium specimens are generally sourced from wild catches, and any hobbyist interest in captive breeding reduces demand on wild populations.
