Taxonomy & naming
Hemigrammus levis was described by Mary Durbin in 1908, placing it in the large and historically problematic genus Hemigrammus — one of the most species-rich genera of American characids. The genus has long been treated as incertae sedis within Characidae: it lacks the unambiguous synapomorphies that would firmly anchor it within any of the family's internal clades, and various molecular and morphological revisions have reshuffled its membership without producing a fully stable arrangement. Hemigrammus levis itself carries an uncertain internal position within the genus, a status noted in current references.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Hemigrammus levis Durbin, 1908. The species is sometimes confused in the hobby with superficially similar small tetras, and the common name false rummy-nose tetra reflects a passing resemblance to the true rummy-nose (Hemigrammus rhodostomus) and related species, though H. levis lacks the bold red head patch that makes the rummy-nose unmistakable.
Morphology
Hemigrammus levis is a small, streamlined tetra reaching approximately 2 in standard length (around 2.5 in total length), males and females of similar size. The body follows the typical Hemigrammus plan: moderately slender, laterally compressed, with a complete lateral line — the character that originally helped define Hemigrammus against the incomplete-lined Hyphessobrycon. Coloration is modest: a silvery body with a faint lateral stripe or iridescent midlateral band that can catch the light, and no bold red, black, or neon markings of the kind that characterise the hobby's most popular tetras.
The species does not carry a pronounced caudal-peduncle spot or a strongly defined eye band in the manner of many congeners. Its unassuming appearance means it moves through the trade without the recognition it might otherwise receive, and it is frequently mixed in with or misidentified as related small Hemigrammus species.
Habitat
Hemigrammus levis ranges across the Amazon River basin in Brazil and into the Essequibo basin of Guyana, making it one of the more geographically widespread small tetras of the South American lowlands. The IUCN assessment describes it as one of the most common characids from the Amazon lowlands, with a population trend listed as stable and no major threats identified.
The species is broadly tolerant of Amazonian water types, occurring in whitewater, blackwater, and clearwater environments — floodplain lakes, slow-moving tributaries, and marginal habitats with soft substrates and abundant vegetation or leaf litter. It is a benthopelagic species associated with slow to still water rather than fast-flowing channels. The wide habitat tolerance across chemistry types helps explain its abundance and large distributional footprint.
Feeding
In the wild, Hemigrammus levis feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates typical of Amazonian slow-water habitats. Data from the río Negro indicate a diet dominated by Cladocera (small zooplankton), supplemented by small amounts of insects — a pattern shared with many sympatric small characids that exploit the zooplankton-rich blackwater and floodplain lake environments.
In the aquarium the species accepts standard small-tetra foods without difficulty: good-quality micro-pellets and fine flake form an adequate staple, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, cyclops, and micro-worms are eagerly taken and improve condition. A varied diet is advisable to maintain robust fish and encourage natural behaviour.
Mating
Hemigrammus levis spawns in the manner typical of the genus: it is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Courtship involves the male pursuing and displaying alongside the female, and spawning takes place among fine-leaved vegetation or across open substrate, with eggs broadcast freely and left to develop unattended. The eggs are adhesive and settle among plants or substrate after fertilisation.
No detailed published account of H. levis courtship behaviour is available; what is known is inferred from the genus pattern. As with most Hemigrammus species, spawning is most likely to be triggered by a combination of warm, soft, slightly acidic water, high-quality conditioning diet, and a reduction in the density of tankmates that might compete for space. Keeping a group with multiple males present encourages natural display interactions.
Breeding
Hemigrammus levis follows the standard egg-scattering Hemigrammus breeding template. Conditioned adults spawn over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, Cabomba, or synthetic spawning mops, depositing adhesive eggs that adhere to the spawning medium. A small bare breeding tank with a thin layer of plants or a mop, soft and slightly acidic water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and conditioning on live or frozen foods brings the fish into spawning condition.
Adults offer no parental care and will consume their own eggs if not removed; breeders harvest the spawning medium or separate the adults promptly after spawning. The eggs hatch within a few days at typical breeding temperatures, and the fry are free-swimming shortly after. First foods should be appropriately small — infusoria or a commercial liquid fry food, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. As with most small Hemigrammus, fry growth is steady in good conditions. The species is rarely bred deliberately in the hobby given its limited availability, but responds to the same methods used for other Hemigrammus tetras.
In the aquarium
Hemigrammus levis is a peaceful, schooling tetra suited to a community aquarium with other small, non-aggressive fish. Its undemanding nature and tolerance of a range of water chemistries make it straightforward to maintain, though the species is uncommon in the hobby — largely because it lacks the vivid markings that drive demand for the most popular tetras. It is occasionally imported as bycatch in mixed Amazonian tetra shipments.
A group of six or more is recommended to allow normal shoaling behaviour; the fish is notably untroubled in a soft, slightly acidic, well-planted setup that reflects its native Amazonian habitat, but Seriously Fish records it tolerating a fairly wide pH range from 5.5 to 7.0 and water temperatures of 75–82 °F. Suitable tankmates include other small peaceful tetras, dwarf cichlids, corydoras, and small rasboras. The species is undemanding at feeding and takes standard community foods without difficulty. Its modest appearance may actually be an asset in a mixed species display where subtler fish provide visual balance alongside bolder companions.
Conservation
Hemigrammus levis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 based on an evaluation completed on 4 March 2021. The justification is straightforward: the species has a broad distribution across the Amazon and Essequibo basins, is described as one of the most common characids of the Amazon lowlands, and no major threats to its populations have been identified. The population trend is recorded as stable.
The wide tolerance of different Amazonian water types — white, black, and clear — and the species' occurrence across extensive floodplain and tributary systems give it a level of ecological resilience that many narrowly endemic Amazonian fishes lack. No specific conservation actions are considered necessary at present. The primary concern for South Amazonian fishes generally is the long-term integrity of floodplain habitats under agricultural and hydrological pressure, but H. levis's broad range buffers it against local-scale impacts.
