Taxonomy & naming
Hemigrammus lunatus was described by M.L. Durbin in 1918 and has remained in the genus Hemigrammus, one of the largest characid genera in South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; as the species was placed directly into Hemigrammus, no parenthetical authority is used.
The genus Hemigrammus belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses dozens of small, schooling tetras distributed widely across tropical South America. Many species are superficially similar, differing in details of stripe pattern, blotch placement, and fin pigmentation. H. lunatus is distinguished by the combination of a wide dark stripe running across the eye, a well-defined rounded humeral blotch, and a narrow dark stripe at the base of the anal fin — a trio of features that separates it from the most similar congeners when examined in hand. Meristic data recorded for the species include dorsal fin rays around 11, anal fin rays 26–30, and vertebrae 32–33.
Morphology
Hemigrammus lunatus is a slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching a maximum recorded total length of about 2 in, though most individuals in collections are closer to 1–1.5 in. The body form is typical of the genus: a somewhat fusiform outline, moderately large eye, a single dorsal fin, and a forked caudal fin.
The species' most distinctive markings are the broad dark horizontal stripe that passes across the eye, a rounded humeral blotch situated just behind the gill cover, and a narrow dark stripe running along the base of the anal fin. The general body colouration is silvery with a faint iridescent lateral sheen. These features collectively allow identification in the field, though the genus is large enough that care is warranted when species ranges overlap. Sexual differences are modest and typical of the genus, with ripe females appearing noticeably deeper-bellied than males.
Habitat
The species has a broad South American distribution spanning the Amazon, Paraguay, Corantijn (Corentyne), and Orinoco river basins, with records from Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru. This wide footprint across multiple major drainages reflects a tolerant ecological profile.
Within its range, H. lunatus inhabits slow-flowing, low-gradient streams, small rivers, and floodplain lakes — the kind of vegetated, soft-bottomed, often seasonally inundated habitats that characterise lowland Amazonian ichthyofauna. Its benthopelagic lifestyle places it in the lower-to-mid water column, often in proximity to submerged vegetation or marginal cover. Reported water parameters in hobbyist accounts suggest soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions — temperatures in the range of 73–81 °F and pH around 5.5–6.5 — consistent with the warm, poorly buffered blackwater and clearwater systems typical of much of Amazonia.
Feeding
Like most small characids, Hemigrammus lunatus is a generalised carnivore in the wild, taking small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and drifting organic particles. The wide distribution across floodplain lakes and slow streams provides access to diverse prey including small crustaceans, insect larvae, and microorganisms, as well as fine particulate food.
In the aquarium it accepts a broad range of standard foods — good-quality micro-pellets and flake, frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Offering varied diet including live or frozen invertebrates helps maintain condition and natural behaviour. As a small-mouthed species it does best with appropriately sized food items; finely ground or purpose-made tetra foods are suitable staples.
Mating
Hemigrammus lunatus is an egg-scattering, open-water spawner in the broad characid tradition. No parental behaviour has been reported in either field observations or captive accounts. Like most Hemigrammus species, it spawns among fine-leaved plants or other submerged structure, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs lodge briefly before the adults move on.
Displaying males are presumed to court females with characteristic characid posturing — lateral presentations and parallel swimming — though specific mating behaviour for this species is not well documented in the literature. The species is kept in shoals in nature and captivity, and group dynamics typical of schooling tetras are expected: males compete for female attention within the school, with spawning occurring opportunistically rather than as a discrete seasonal event.
Breeding
Captive breeding of H. lunatus follows the general Hemigrammus pattern. Conditioned adults will spawn in a dedicated breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic mops, which catch and hold the small adhesive eggs. A separate breeding vessel is advised as the adults will consume eggs and offer no parental care whatsoever.
Eggs typically hatch within 24–48 hours depending on temperature, and the fry become free-swimming a day or two later once the yolk sac is absorbed. First foods should be very fine — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry preparations — before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake as the fry grow. Soft, slightly acidic water and subdued lighting during the early fry stage reduce stress. Specific breeding data for this species are sparse in the hobby literature, and detailed notes from successful spawnings would add useful knowledge.
In the aquarium
Hemigrammus lunatus is an infrequently traded but undemanding tetra that presents no particular difficulty in captivity. It is a peaceful, schooling species best kept in groups of ten or more individuals, where the natural social structure is maintained and the fish display active, confident behaviour rather than the stressed darting of isolated specimens.
A tank of 25 US gal or more with good filtration, moderate flow, soft slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, temperature 73–81 °F), and patches of fine-leaved or floating vegetation suits the species well. Subdued lighting with darker substrate brings out natural colouration. Compatible tankmates include other peaceful small tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and bottom-dwellers such as Corydoras. As an occasional acquisition rather than a staple of the trade, it appeals most to hobbyists with an interest in the broader Hemigrammus fauna or in species-authentic Amazonian community tanks.
Conservation
Hemigrammus lunatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 4 March 2021 and published in 2023 (assessor: F. Lima; reviewer: T.J. Lyons). The designation reflects the species' wide distribution across the central and western Amazon basin and the río Paraguay basin, its stable population trend, and its documented presence within protected areas including the Zona Reservada Tambopata-Candamo in Peru, El Porvenir Biological Station in Bolivia, and the Pantanal National Park in Brazil.
The species is occasionally taken for the aquarium trade but not at levels that threaten wild populations. Its broad geographic range and tolerance of a variety of slow-water habitats provide a degree of resilience. No significant conservation concerns are currently identified, though ongoing monitoring of the broader Amazonian ichthyofauna — including widespread but poorly studied species such as this one — remains important as land-use change and drought intensity affect lowland South American river systems.
