Taxonomy & naming
Hemigrammus stictus was described by Mary Durbin in 1909, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name with the parenthetical authority (Durbin, 1909), indicating the species has been transferred from the original genus in which it was placed. It belongs to Hemigrammus, one of the largest and most species-rich characid genera, a group characterised by the presence of scales on the caudal fin lobes — a feature distinguishing it from the closely related Hyphessobrycon.
The genus Hemigrammus sits within the family Characidae sensu lato, the enormous neotropical and African family of characins that encompasses most of the popular small tetras of the aquarium hobby. Reflecting decades of ongoing systematic revision, the precise tribal and subfamilial placement of Hemigrammus has shifted across treatments; Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for the valid name. H. stictus has at times been confused with other spot-bearing species in the genus, and its synonym history reflects the taxonomic complexity common across this diverse group.
Morphology
Hemigrammus stictus is a slender, moderately compressed tetra reaching around 1.5 in total length, though some records extend to approximately 2.5 in. The body is silvery with a translucent quality, typical of small characids, and the fins are largely clear to faintly tinted.
The defining feature is the caudal spot: a patch of red to orange-red pigment at the base of the caudal fin, particularly conspicuous on the lower lobe. A humeral spot — a small dark marking behind the operculum on the shoulder — is also present, giving rise to the species epithet stictus (meaning marked or spotted in Greek). The combination of the humeral mark and the red caudal base distinguishes H. stictus from several similar Hemigrammus species in the hobby. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: males tend to be slightly smaller and slimmer, while females become noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Hemigrammus stictus has a broad distribution across northern South America, recorded from the Amazon River basin, the Rio Negro basin, the Orinoco River basin, and coastal river systems in Guyana. Within those systems it inhabits slow-moving rivers, tributaries, and floodplain lakes — benthopelagic in habit, occupying the mid-water column in areas with cover such as submerged vegetation, leaf litter, and marginal structure.
Water conditions across its range skew soft and acidic to neutral. FishBase records a temperature range of 73–81 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.0 as typical, while field and aquarium records extend pH down to around 5.5 in the blackwater portions of its range. The species is broadly tropical in its thermal requirements, with no indication of tolerance for cooler conditions.
Feeding
In the wild, Hemigrammus stictus feeds on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and other zooplankton — intercepted in the mid-water column or gleaned from vegetation and the substrate surface. This feeding strategy is typical of small, schooling characids that exploit the invertebrate fauna of slow or still, vegetated waters.
In the aquarium it is undemanding and accepts a wide variety of prepared and live foods: good-quality flake and micro-granules form a suitable base, supplemented with small frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and Cyclops. Varied feeding improves colour intensity and overall condition, and the species is unfussy enough that occasional live food treats are sufficient to keep it in good form.
Mating
Hemigrammus stictus follows the typical egg-scattering reproductive strategy of Hemigrammus tetras. There is no pair bond and no parental investment; males court females with chasing behaviour and short parallel runs, guiding them into fine-leaved vegetation or other spawning substrate where eggs are scattered and immediately abandoned.
In groups, multiple males may pursue a single female, and the intensity of courtship increases when fish are well-conditioned on live or frozen foods. The red caudal colouration of the male likely plays a role in intersexual signalling, consistent with the pattern seen in related spot-tailed and spot-based tetras where caudal pigmentation is sexually dimorphic or intensifies during courtship.
Breeding
Breeding Hemigrammus stictus follows the standard protocol for small Hemigrammus species. A conditioned pair or small group is moved to a dedicated breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0–6.5, temperature 79–81 °F), fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops, and subdued lighting. The adults will consume their own eggs, so either a mesh or marbles over the bottom, or prompt removal of the adults after spawning, is required to protect the eggs.
Eggs are small, adhesive, and scattered among the spawning medium. At breeding temperatures they hatch within roughly 24–36 hours, and the tiny fry become free-swimming after another two to three days once the yolk sac is absorbed. First foods need to be very fine: infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered flake as the fry grow. Growth is relatively quick under good feeding and clean water conditions.
In the aquarium
The red-base tetra is well-suited to a peaceful community aquarium with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Like all Hemigrammus, it is a shoaling species that displays best and behaves most naturally in a group of at least six to eight fish; larger numbers produce more striking collective movement and bolder colouration in the individual fish. A tank of 23.5 in or more in length provides adequate swimming space for a school.
Water chemistry need not precisely mirror the blackwater extremes of the species' range: it adapts well to near-neutral, moderately soft water (pH 6.0–7.0, hardness 1–12 °dH) at 73–81 °F. A planted aquarium with open midwater swimming lanes, leaf litter or dark substrate to deepen the apparent colour, and subdued or dappled lighting shows the red caudal spot to best effect. Compatible tankmates include other small tetras, rasboras, small corydoras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. It is a robust and long-established aquarium species, available as tank-bred stock and tolerant of typical community conditions once acclimated.
Conservation
Hemigrammus stictus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent evaluation completed in March 2021. Its wide distribution across multiple major river systems in northern South America — the Amazon, Negro, and Orinoco basins, plus coastal drainages of Guyana — means it is not considered to face any range-wide threat at present.
The species is common in the aquarium trade and is widely tank-bred, which reduces any collecting pressure on wild populations. No significant habitat-specific threats have been identified for this widespread species, and its ability to occupy a range of slow-water habitats including degraded environments provides some additional resilience. Ongoing monitoring of Amazonian and Orinocan fish assemblages more broadly remains important context for all species in these systems.
