A small, subtly striking characid from the Paraná basin of South America, Hyphessobrycon igneus — the Firefin Tetra — takes its name from the Latin igneus, meaning fiery, a nod to the vivid red-tipped fins that set it apart from the many plain silvertip relatives in the genus. Described in 1980, it remains one of the less commonly seen Hyphessobrycon in the hobby, but its tolerant water-chemistry requirements, peaceful temperament, and compact size make it a rewarding fish for planted community aquaria. The IUCN assesses the species as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon igneus was described in 1980 by Argentine ichthyologists Miquelarena, Menni, López, and Casciotta. The type locality lies within the Paraná River drainage of South America, the vast subtropical system that drains much of southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon igneus Miquelarena, Menni, López & Casciotta, 1980; the species has not been synonymised and remains placed in Hyphessobrycon.

The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the most species-rich in the family Characidae, encompassing well over a hundred species of small to medium characids distributed across South and Central America. Relationships within the genus have historically been difficult to resolve with hard synapomorphies, and revisions have periodically moved species in and out. H. igneus has remained relatively stable taxonomically, but its relationships to other red-finned members of the genus have not been fully resolved in the literature covered by available sources.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon igneus is a small tetra, reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length in males, with a maximum total length around 2 in. The body plan is the typical slender-to-moderately deep compressed shape of the genus: a pointed snout, large eye, and a slightly arched dorsal profile that peaks at the origin of the dorsal fin. The adipose fin is present, as in all characids.

The species earns its common name from the fin coloration. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins display red to orange-red pigmentation — more intense in breeding condition and in well-fed, healthy specimens — contrasting with the generally silvery body. A faint humeral spot and a dark blotch at the base of the caudal peduncle are often present, features shared with many congeners. Males tend to be slimmer in profile than the deeper-bodied females, and the red fin coloration is typically stronger in males, particularly during courtship.

Habitat

Hyphessobrycon igneus is native to the Paraná River basin, one of South America's major drainage systems. The Paraná and its tributaries flow through subtropical lowland environments characterized by warm to mild temperatures, varying water chemistry depending on the substrate and local geology, and dense marginal and aquatic vegetation along slower-moving reaches and floodplain lagoons.

The species is found at water temperatures of 68–75 °F (68–75 °F), reflecting the subtropical character of the southern Paraná region, which experiences cooler winters compared to the tropical Amazonian drainages. Available records indicate soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral conditions are typical of the habitats the species occupies, consistent with the broader Paraná system's range of water-chemistry types from soft black-water tributaries to harder, clearer-water streams.

Feeding

Like most small Hyphessobrycon, H. igneus is an opportunistic omnivore. In its natural habitats it likely feeds on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — as well as terrestrial insects that fall to the water's surface, and possibly some algae and plant matter. The fine gill rakers and relatively small terminal mouth typical of the genus suit a diet of small, soft prey items rather than large or hard-bodied food.

In the aquarium the species is unfussy and readily accepts high-quality flake and small pellet foods as the dietary staple. Supplementing with small live or frozen foods — Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops, and bloodworm — improves condition, enhances the red fin coloration, and supports reproductive readiness. As with most tetras, small meals offered multiple times a day are preferable to a single large feeding.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon igneus is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, the reproductive strategy shared across virtually all members of the genus. Males in breeding condition display intensified red fin coloration and actively court females, pursuing them through fine-leaved vegetation and spawning substrate. Rival males may display against one another with fins flared, reinforcing hierarchy within a group.

Spawning is typically triggered in the aquarium by a gradual drop in water temperature, a change to slightly softer or more acidic water, and the presence of fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop into which eggs are scattered. Early morning is the most common time for spawning activity, consistent with the pattern seen in many Hyphessobrycon species. Because adults show no bond to their eggs and will consume them, separation of the spawning pair or group from the eggs is necessary to recover any fry.

Breeding

Breeding H. igneus in captivity follows the standard Hyphessobrycon method. A conditioned pair or small group is moved to a dedicated breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, water sprite, or synthetic spawning mops, and a thin layer of substrate or a mesh bottom that lets eggs fall out of reach of the adults. Water conditions of moderate softness, slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.7–7.0), and a temperature in the lower part of the species' range (around 72–75 °F) encourage spawning.

Fertilized eggs are small and adhesive, clinging to plant leaves and mop strands. Adults will eat both eggs and any fry they encounter, so the spawning medium or the adults themselves should be removed once spawning is complete. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at breeding temperatures; the larvae are initially very small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food for the first few days before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is gradual, and juvenile fin coloration develops over several weeks.

In the aquarium

The Firefin Tetra is a peaceful, active schooling fish suited to community aquaria with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. A minimum group of six individuals is recommended to ensure the species displays natural shoaling behavior and to reduce any individual-level stress or timidity; larger groups of ten or more are preferable. Good companions include other small, peaceful characids, rasboras, small corydoras catfish, and peaceful dwarf cichlids.

The species is tolerant of a fairly wide range of water conditions relative to some more demanding tetras. A temperature range of 70–75 °F, pH of 6.7–7.4, and moderate hardness up to around 15 °N dH covers the parameters reported for both wild populations and hobbyist success. A planted aquarium with some open swimming space, gentle filtration, and regular partial water changes provides an ideal environment. The red fin coloration is best brought out by a dark substrate, subdued or diffuse lighting, and a diet that includes live or frozen invertebrates alongside prepared foods.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon igneus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment carried out in 2021 by Flávio Lima of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas. The LC designation reflects a species not currently considered at elevated risk of extinction, with no quantified major decline or severely restricted range that would qualify it for a threatened category under IUCN criteria.

The Paraná River basin, while heavily impacted by agriculture, urbanization, dam construction, and river regulation throughout the twentieth century, still supports a diverse assemblage of small characids. Like many members of the genus, H. igneus likely benefits from the habitat generalism and relatively small body size typical of Hyphessobrycon. No specific conservation measures are recorded for this species in available sources, and it does not appear on the CARES Preservation Program list. Aquarists keeping this species are encouraged to source tank-bred stock wherever possible.
