Moenkhausia costae is a slender, schooling characid native to the São Francisco and Itapicuru river basins of northeastern Brazil — two of the most biogeographically distinct drainages on the continent. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, this omnivorous tetra inhabits still and slow-flowing stretches within the Caatinga dry-forest biome and the adjacent coastal drainages, where it shares foraging space with Astyanax species using similar feeding strategies. Under the name "Signal Stripe Moenkhausia" or "Blackline Tail Tetra" it appears occasionally in the ornamental trade, appealing to aquarists who want a lively, adaptable schooling fish with undemanding care requirements.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia costae was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1907, placing it in the large neotropical characid genus Moenkhausia, named in honour of the American ichthyologist William J. Moenkhaus. The authority is rendered in parentheses — (Steindachner, 1907) — as is standard when a species has been transferred from the genus in which it was first placed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the name as valid within Characidae.

GBIF and some downstream databases place the species in Acestrorhamphidae, reflecting ongoing molecular reassessments of characid systematics; however, the top-level family here follows Catalog of Fishes. Moenkhausia is a large and heterogeneous genus encompassing dozens of species distributed across tropical and subtropical South America, and internal relationships within the genus remain an active area of research. M. costae is most closely tied to the northeastern Brazilian drainages rather than to Amazonian congeners, and its ecological profile — preference for lentic or slow-flowing waters, multi-annual parceled spawning — distinguishes it from the more generalised Moenkhausia species found in larger Amazonian tributaries.

Morphology

Moenkhausia costae is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed tetra reaching up to 3 in standard length and a recorded maximum weight of around 9.2 g, making it a mid-sized member of its genus. The body plan is typical of schooling characins: a streamlined, fusiform profile with a forked tail, moderate dorsal and anal fins, and a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. The common name "Blackline Tail Tetra" alludes to a dark caudal peduncle marking that is useful for field identification.

Colouration in life is silvery with varying degrees of countershading — darker dorsally, paler ventrally — and the diagnostic dark stripe or marking at the base of the caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism in external appearance is subtle; females are generally fuller-bodied when ripe with eggs, but the sexes are otherwise similar in size and coloration. The species' benthopelagic habits mean it is equally at home near the substrate and in mid-water, a flexibility reflected in its moderately deep but not dramatically compressed body.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the São Francisco and Itapicuru river systems of Brazil, with additional occurrences in Northeastern Caatinga and Coastal Drainages ecoregions. The São Francisco is one of the great rivers of Brazil, draining a broad inland basin through the semi-arid Caatinga before turning east to the Atlantic; the Itapicuru drains more directly to the coast in Bahia state. Both systems are characterised by marked seasonal variation in flow and water level tied to the unpredictable rainfall of the Caatinga biome.

Within these systems M. costae is described as a sedentary species with a preference for lentic — still or slow-moving — water habitats: pools, backwaters, and lake-like expanses rather than active current. This preference shapes its reproductive and feeding ecology. Water conditions in the Caatinga drainages vary but are typically warm, and the species is recorded in freshwater at benthopelagic depths, associating with both bottom structure and the mid-water column.

Feeding

Moenkhausia costae is an omnivore with a tendency toward insectivory in the wild, with a trophic level of 3.4 recorded by FishBase — consistent with a diet centred on invertebrates supplemented by plant material and detritus. Scientific literature places it alongside Astyanax species in shared feeding guilds in northeastern Brazilian waters, with the two genera exploiting similar food resources and strategies in sympatry.

In the aquarium it accepts dried foods such as quality flake and small pellets, which should form the dietary base, but benefits substantially from regular offerings of live and frozen invertebrates — brine shrimp, bloodworm, and Daphnia are all readily taken. A varied omnivore diet maintains condition, supports spawning readiness, and brings out the fish's natural activity levels. Like most characids it feeds throughout the water column, competing actively at feeding time without being aggressive toward tankmates.

Mating

Moenkhausia costae is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the general pattern seen across most characins. The species is described as breeding multi-annually with parceled spawning — that is, ripe adults do not deposit all eggs in a single event but rather release batches of eggs across multiple spawning bouts over time, a strategy well-suited to the variable, semi-arid environments of the Caatinga. Spawning activity in the aquarium is reported to peak in the morning hours.

Courtship involves males pursuing ripe females through fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate, with the pair making brief side-by-side passes during which eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The eggs scatter and adhere loosely to plant surfaces or settle to the substrate. Males do not hold territories with the intensity seen in some other characins, and a well-fed group will spawn spontaneously in a densely planted tank without deliberate intervention by the aquarist.

Breeding

Breeding Moenkhausia costae in captivity follows the standard egg-scatterer protocol. A separate, well-planted breeding tank with gentle filtration, a small group of well-conditioned adults, and regular live-food feedings will typically elicit spawning. Eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over a spawning mop hatch within approximately 24 to 36 hours at typical aquarium temperatures; the larvae become free-swimming after a further three to four days once the yolk sac is absorbed.

Adults readily consume their own eggs if left in the breeding tank, so prompt removal of the parents — or use of a separate egg-collection chamber — is standard practice. First foods for the fry should be appropriately fine: infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food for the first days, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. The parceled spawning mode means productive pairs may yield eggs over multiple consecutive days, and the hobbyist can collect batches sequentially. No parental care is provided at any stage.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia costae is a peaceful, active schooling tetra well suited to a community aquarium. A group of at least six individuals is recommended to bring out natural schooling behaviour and reduce skittishness; the species does well alongside other peaceful community fish of similar size. A tank of around 31.5 in or more in length provides adequate swimming room for a small school. The fish is not particularly demanding about water chemistry within the range typical of a well-maintained community tank: a temperature of 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and moderate hardness (GH 4–10) covers the species comfortably.

Décor that includes fine-leaved plants, driftwood, and some open swimming space replicates the lentic, vegetated margins the species favours in the wild and encourages natural behaviour. The species is reported to have a typical aquarium lifespan of around five years under good conditions. It is undemanding in feeding, disease-resilient compared with more delicate tetras, and does not harass tankmates — a reliable, if not especially flashy, choice for the planted community aquarium.

Conservation

Moenkhausia costae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List under the 2022.2 assessment cycle. The evaluation reflects a species with a reasonably broad distribution across two major northeastern Brazilian river systems — the São Francisco and the Itapicuru — plus presence in Caatinga and coastal ecoregions, and no documented range-wide population declines severe enough to trigger a threatened category.

Nonetheless, both the São Francisco and the Caatinga drainages generally face significant anthropogenic pressures: water abstraction for agriculture and human consumption, impoundment by dams, deforestation and land-use change in the semi-arid zone, and the cascading effects of drought intensification driven by climate change. The Caatinga biome has one of the lowest proportions of legally protected area among Brazilian biomes, and freshwater biodiversity there is underrepresented in conservation planning relative to Amazonian systems. The species' preference for still and slow-moving water makes it potentially sensitive to hydrological alteration of the floodplain pools and backwaters it favours.
