Moenkhausia forestii is a small, silver-bodied characid from the upper Rio Paraná basin of central Brazil, described by Benine, Mariguela and Oliveira in 2009 from material collected in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Like many members of its genus it is an unassuming fish in hand — a compact, laterally compressed tetra with a dark caudal spot and the glinting flanks typical of the group — but it occupies a noteworthy place in the systematics of Moenkhausia, a large and taxonomically complex genus that continues to yield new species as the Brazilian interior is surveyed more thoroughly.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia forestii was described by Ricardo C. Benine, Cristhiana P. Mariguela, and Claudio Oliveira in 2009, in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 7, issue 3). The species belongs to Moenkhausia, the largest genus in the subfamily Stethaprioninae within the family Characidae, and the valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Moenkhausia forestii Benine, Mariguela & Oliveira, 2009. The specific epithet honours the Brazilian ichthyologist Luiz Fernando Caserta Tencatt Foresti, who made significant contributions to the study of Neotropical fishes, particularly within the Siluriformes and Characiformes.

The genus Moenkhausia is notoriously difficult taxonomically. It is diagnosed primarily by the complete lateral line and the presence of teeth on the inner row of the premaxilla, characters that have resulted in a heterogeneous assemblage of roughly 80 species. Several recent revisions have redistributed species out of Moenkhausia into resurrected or newly erected genera — FishBase and some literature sources may list M. forestii under an alternative or tentative placement — but Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for the valid binomial used here.

Morphology

Moenkhausia forestii is a small tetra, reaching approximately 1.5–2 in standard length at maturity, with the characteristically compressed, moderately deep body plan of the genus. The flanks are silvery, with a thin, dark midlateral stripe that intensifies posteriorly and terminates in a well-defined dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin — a pattern common to several Moenkhausia species and useful in field recognition when combined with other characters.

Diagnostic meristic and morphometric characters distinguishing M. forestii from its closest relatives were detailed in the original description and include details of scale counts, fin-ray counts, and proportional measurements. As with many species in the genus, live colouration is subdued compared with popular aquarium tetras: the value of the fish to systematists lies in its morphology and distribution rather than in any conspicuous ornamental feature. No subspecies are recognised.

Habitat

Moenkhausia forestii is known from the upper Rio Paraná drainage in central-western Brazil, with type-locality material collected from Mato Grosso do Sul. The upper Paraná basin in this region comprises a mosaic of cerrado (savanna woodland) streams and rivers flowing over sandy or muddy substrates, often with fringing gallery forest, submerged leaf litter, and aquatic vegetation in slower marginal zones.

Small characids of this guild typically occupy the mid-water column in clear to slightly tea-coloured water, where they form loose schools over open sand or among submerged vegetation. Water temperatures in the upper Paraná headwaters vary seasonally — warmer in the austral summer wet season and cooler in the dry winter — and pH ranges from mildly acidic to near-neutral depending on substrate and vegetation cover. Precise habitat data specific to M. forestii beyond the type locality have not been widely published.

Feeding

Like most small characids in the upper Paraná system, Moenkhausia forestii is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates, zooplankton, terrestrial insects that fall to the surface, and microalgae or plant material. This generalised feeding strategy is well documented across the genus and consistent with the stomach-content analyses conducted on sympatric Moenkhausia species in the same drainage.

No detailed dietary study specific to M. forestii has been published. In the aquarium, fish of this size and body plan adapt readily to standard prepared foods — quality micro-pellets and fine flake — supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, cyclops, and newly hatched brine shrimp. A varied diet supports condition and colouration.

Mating

Moenkhausia forestii reproduces by egg-scattering, the default mode for the genus and for the family Characidae more broadly. Males likely display to females through lateral posturing and fin erection, with no lasting pair bond formed. Spawning is initiated by environmental cues — rising temperature, increasing photoperiod, and rainfall triggers associated with the onset of the wet season in the cerrado — though captive fish in stable aquarium conditions can be induced to spawn independently of season.

Courting males are expected to pursue females into fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered in small batches. No parental care is provided; adults are indifferent to or will consume their own eggs after spawning.

Breeding

No detailed captive-breeding account specific to Moenkhausia forestii has been published in the hobby literature, and the species is not commercially available in the ornamental trade. General principles applicable to small Moenkhausia apply: condition a group of adults on a varied diet including live or frozen foods, raise the temperature slightly to the upper part of the tolerated range, and offer fine-leaved spawning plants or synthetic mops as an egg-deposition substrate.

Eggs are adhesive and will be deposited among vegetation or across the bottom. Because adults provide no care and will eat eggs on contact, breeders should remove adults after spawning or transfer eggs to a separate rearing vessel. Incubation at tropical temperatures is typically 24–48 hours, and the tiny free-swimming fry require infusoria or equivalent first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Data on clutch size and fry development rate for this species specifically are not available in the published literature.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia forestii is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially unknown in the hobby; it has been described scientifically but has not entered commercial collection or captive propagation to any documented degree. Aquarists interested in the species would need to source it through specialist contacts or scientific institutions, and husbandry information is extrapolated from the broader genus.

As a small, schooling characid from a temperate-to-subtropical South American drainage, it would suit a moderately warm, well-filtered aquarium planted with fine-leaved vegetation and offering open swimming space. A group of six or more individuals would be appropriate; tankmates should be peaceful fish of similar size. Water should be soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the cerrado stream conditions of the upper Paraná. The species holds more interest for the specialist or the scientifically inclined aquarist than for the general hobby market.

Conservation

Moenkhausia forestii has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the time of writing, and no formal conservation status has been assigned. The species is known from the upper Rio Paraná drainage in Mato Grosso do Sul, a region subject to intense agricultural pressure: the cerrado biome, which defines the catchment character of the upper Paraná headwaters, is one of the most threatened biomes in South America, having lost more than half of its original extent to soybean cultivation, cattle ranching, and sugarcane production.

Small, range-restricted stream fishes of the cerrado are at risk from habitat degradation, water extraction, sedimentation from deforested catchments, and the impoundment of rivers for hydroelectric and irrigation purposes. Whether M. forestii has a broad or narrow distribution within the upper Paraná system — and therefore whether it is genuinely range-restricted or simply under-collected — is not established in the published record. A precautionary approach to its conservation would be warranted pending a proper range assessment.
