Taxonomy & naming
Moenkhausia metae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922 in his monograph of the freshwater fishes of western South America published in the Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum (vol. 9, pp. 1–346). The type locality is Barrigón on the Río Meta, Orinoco basin, Colombia, and the holotype is deposited at the California Academy of Sciences (CAS 55610). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Moenkhausia metae Eigenmann, 1922; the authority is not parenthetical because the species was described in Moenkhausia and has remained there.
Moenkhausia is a large, taxonomically complex genus within the family Characidae, and several of its members share the generalized body plan and barred or spotted patterning characteristic of mid-sized Orinoco tetras. The genus has undergone periodic revisions, but M. metae has been consistently maintained as a valid species. Its closest relatives within the genus are not well resolved without a full molecular phylogeny, but it belongs to the broadly Orinoco-distributed radiation of the genus.
Morphology
Moenkhausia metae is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed tetra reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in, making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body is silvery with the typical Moenkhausia lateral band and a dark caudal spot or caudal peduncle patch; specific pattern details follow the family plan of a dark horizontal stripe running to the base of the caudal fin. Fin coloration is generally hyaline.
Like other Moenkhausia it has a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin, and the toothed jaw characteristic of the family Characidae. Sexual dimorphism is subtle in this species; ripe females are visibly deeper-bodied when in breeding condition, as is typical for egg-scattering characids. Trophic level is recorded at 3.4 (FishBase), indicating an opportunistic diet with significant invertebrate and animal prey.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper Río Meta system, a major left-bank tributary of the Orinoco draining the Llanos and Andean piedmont of Colombia, with records extending into adjacent Venezuelan drainages. Within this system it occupies white-water tributaries and smaller affluents characterised by transparent to lightly tannin-stained water over sand substrate, with driftwood and dense riparian and submerged vegetation providing structural complexity.
Biotope data from upper Río Meta affluents document water that is very soft (conductivity below 100 µS/cm), acidic to moderately acidic (pH 4.5–6.5), and warm (79–82 °F under natural conditions). Sympatric species in similar habitats include Nannostomus pencilfish, Hyphessobrycon tetras, and Copella splashing tetras — a typical Orinoco lowland community. FishBase records the species as a tropical freshwater benthopelagic fish, suggesting it occupies the lower and middle water column.
Feeding
Moenkhausia metae is an omnivore with a trophic level of 3.4, reflecting a diet that leans toward small invertebrates and zooplankton alongside plant or algal matter. In the wild it would encounter aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, small worms, and surface-fallen invertebrates in the soft-water Llanos tributaries it inhabits.
In the aquarium it readily accepts good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods as a staple, with regular supplementation of frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and similar items recommended to maintain condition and colour. Being an active, mid-to-lower water column feeder, it competes well at feeding time in a community setting and does not require special dietary treatment beyond the variety any well-kept tetra should receive.
Mating
Like all members of Moenkhausia, M. metae is presumed to be an egg-scattering, open spawner with no parental care. Males in spawning condition likely pursue females actively through fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate, the pair performing brief lateral contacts to release eggs and milt simultaneously — the standard characid spawning embrace.
No specific courtship descriptions exist in the published literature for M. metae, but the pattern consistent across the genus involves males displaying to females with spread fins and intensified coloration, and spawning occurring most actively in the morning hours. Conditioning a mixed group rather than an isolated pair typically elicits the best spawning response, and the presence of multiple males increases competitive display.
Breeding
Moenkhausia metae follows the standard open-water egg-scattering breeding mode typical of the genus and family. Eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants or over a soft substrate and are adhesive, attaching to vegetation or substrate rather than drifting freely. The adults provide no parental care and will consume eggs if not removed.
Related Moenkhausia species kept by hobbyists (including M. sanctaefilomenae and M. pittieri) become free-swimming fry within approximately three to four days at warm temperatures. First foods for newly free-swimming fry should be very small — infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and crushed flake as growth allows. Soft, acidic water replicating the species' natural Orinoco parameters is advisable for breeding attempts, as very hard or alkaline water may reduce egg viability. A separate, fine-planted breeding tank with a mesh or grid bottom to protect eggs from adults is the practical approach.
In the aquarium
Moenkhausia metae is an active, peaceable schooling fish suited to a community aquarium with South American biotope or mixed tropical neighbours. A group of at least six individuals is recommended to express natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual fish stress; larger groups of ten or more show bolder, more confident behaviour. Tank size of 31.5–39.5 in or more in length suits an adult school given the species' 3 in adult size and active swimming style.
Water chemistry should lean soft and acidic to match the species' Orinoco origins — pH 5.5–7.0 and low conductivity — though like many commercially kept tetras it can adapt to moderately hard, neutral tap water once acclimatised. Temperature of 77–82 °F covers the natural range. A planted setup with open central swimming space, gentle filtration, and some driftwood or leaf litter provides appropriate conditions. Compatible tankmates include other South American tetras, pencilfish, small corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. The species should not be kept with fin-nipping species or boisterous tankmates that would outcompete it at feeding.
Conservation
Moenkhausia metae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2020), reflecting a distribution across the upper Río Meta drainage that, while not exceptionally broad, is sufficiently stable that the species does not currently meet threshold criteria for a threatened category. The Orinoco basin as a whole supports one of South America's most intact large-river fish faunas, and upper-Meta tributaries retain substantial habitat.
Nonetheless, the Llanos region faces ongoing pressures from agriculture, cattle ranching, water management, and seasonal flooding manipulation. Collecting for the ornamental trade occurs across the Orinoco system, though M. metae does not appear to be among the most heavily traded tetras. Continued monitoring of Orinoco-drainage characid populations is warranted given the pace of land-use change in the Colombian and Venezuelan Llanos.
