Odontostilbe paraguayensis is a small characid of the Paraguay and lower Paraná river basins in South America, reaching about 1.5 in in standard length. An inconspicuous but ecologically representative member of the subfamily Cheirodontinae, it was first described from material collected at Asunción, Paraguay, and remains one of the more frequently encountered small schooling tetras of the middle Paraná drainage. Its modest proportions and omnivorous habits make it a generalist well suited to the slow-flowing, vegetated margin habitats of the subtropical Platine lowlands.

Taxonomy & naming

Odontostilbe paraguayensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and C. H. Kennedy in 1903, in a contribution published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (vol. 55, p. 512). The type locality is Asunción, Paraguay; the holotype is catalogued as CAS 59785 at the California Academy of Sciences. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats it as a valid species within Characidae, subfamily Cheirodontinae — a group of small-bodied, slender characids widespread in South America's Atlantic-draining basins.

The genus Odontostilbe contains roughly a dozen small characid species distributed across the Orinoco, Amazon, and La Plata drainages. Members are characterised by a slender body, large eyes, and minute teeth. The species has no documented synonyms of consequence, and because it was placed in Odontostilbe from its original description, no parenthetical authority notation is required. The valid binomial as recognised by Catalog of Fishes is Odontostilbe paraguayensis Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903.

Morphology

Odontostilbe paraguayensis is a slender, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other cheirodontine tetras it has a fusiform body with large eyes proportionally sized for the head, a small terminal mouth, and a moderately forked caudal fin. The flanks carry the typical cheirodontine silver sheen, often with a faint lateral stripe or iridescent band that becomes more visible under angled lighting.

Sexual dimorphism is modest. Ripe females are noticeably deeper-bellied when gravid, and males in spawning condition may show slightly intensified pigmentation along the flanks, but neither sex carries elaborate finnage or bold colouration. The fish is unremarkable by aquarium standards — its appeal lies in its schooling behaviour and naturalistic character rather than striking colouration.

Habitat

The species is native to the Paraguay River basin and the lower Paraná River basin of south-central South America, with the type locality at Asunción in central Paraguay. It inhabits the subtropical Platine lowlands, a system of broad, slow-to-moderate rivers, oxbow lakes, floodplain pools, and densely vegetated margins characteristic of the Gran Chaco and adjacent regions.

FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, inhabiting the lower to mid water column in freshwater environments. Like most cheirodontines it likely favours calm or slow-flowing reaches with emergent or submerged vegetation where zooplankton and small invertebrates are abundant. The Paraná-Paraguay system is characterised by seasonal flood pulses that shape fish distribution and breeding cycles throughout the drainage.

Feeding

Odontostilbe paraguayensis is an omnivore with a trophic level of approximately 2.5, consistent with a diet that combines small invertebrates and plant or algal material. In the wild it likely feeds on zooplankton, small aquatic insect larvae, and fine organic matter in the water column and at the surface of submerged vegetation.

In the aquarium it accepts standard prepared foods including quality micro-pellets and fine flake, and benefits from regular supplementation with small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and baby brine shrimp. A varied diet supports condition and brings out the best in schooling behaviour. Being a small fish, it feeds best on items sized appropriately to its small mouth.

Mating

Odontostilbe paraguayensis is presumed to follow the egg-scattering reproductive strategy typical of cheirodontine characids, in which males court females with brief displays and the pair scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate with no subsequent parental involvement.

Specific courtship observations for this species are not documented in the available literature. Males in spawning condition likely intensify their lateral colouration and pursue females actively. In the Paraguay-Paraná floodplain, spawning in wild populations is probably timed to the seasonal flood pulse, when warm, shallow, vegetated floodplain water becomes available — a pattern widespread among small characids of the La Plata drainage.

Breeding

No detailed captive breeding accounts for Odontostilbe paraguayensis have been published in accessible literature. By analogy with closely related cheirodontines the reproductive mode is egg-scattering with no parental care: conditioned adults will scatter small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and the eggs hatch within a few days at typical tropical temperatures.

Adults will consume eggs and fry if given the opportunity, so breeders working with cheirodontines typically remove either the adults or the spawning medium to a separate rearing vessel once eggs are detected. Fry are small at hatching and require fine first foods such as infusoria or paramecia before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Specific incubation periods and clutch sizes for this species are not on record.

In the aquarium

Odontostilbe paraguayensis is not a common aquarium species and is rarely encountered in the trade, but it is occasionally kept by hobbyists interested in authentic South American community biotopes. It should be kept in schools of six or more to express natural shoaling behaviour and reduce timidity. A well-planted tank with open swimming space, soft subdued lighting, and a dark substrate suits the fish and shows its silver-flanked schooling most effectively.

Water conditions should reflect its subtropical South American origins: temperatures in the low to mid 20s Celsius, neutral to slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH, and soft to moderately hard water. It is a peaceful species compatible with other small, non-aggressive fish of similar size. Its small mouth and modest size make it unsuitable as a tankmate for anything large enough to regard it as prey. Because it is an active open-water schooler it does best in a reasonably spacious aquarium rather than a very small tank.

Conservation

Odontostilbe paraguayensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded by FishBase as of March 2021. This status reflects the species' occurrence across a large portion of the Paraguay and lower Paraná river system, one of South America's major drainage networks, where it presumably maintains broadly distributed, viable populations.

The Paraguay-Paraná system faces ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, wetland drainage, and large hydroelectric and navigation infrastructure projects, all of which alter the floodplain dynamics that small characids depend on for seasonal spawning. While these threats do not currently place O. paraguayensis at elevated risk, continued transformation of the Platine floodplain warrants monitoring of small-bodied, habitat-sensitive species across the system.
